Bord na Mona Workers
Back in 1953 the 64 houses on The Green were ready for occupation and one by one each house was filled with families, from all over Ireland, seeking a new life working for Bord na Mona and living in Lanesboro. For Lanesboro this influx was a wonderful boost to the local community and economy of the area.
Come 7.30am every morning doors were closed by all the men leaving their new homes to go to work on with Bord na Mona. Generations of families enjoyed the lifestyle and security that this new life guaranteed to them and their children were growing in a great country environment.
For us The Green was a wonderful place as there were so many children of a great variety of ages and all locals were gaining a new friendship extension. The Green was a hive of activity with the sons and daughters out playing outside their houses, on the green playing field up from the cross, where games of football and hurling could be up to 20-a-side and it was also the place to gather friends as we made our way to the nearby woods.
During the month of March there were two retirements from the Bord in the form of Mickie Tynan and Vincent Reddin – both men having given a lifetime of work to the Bord. Mickie son of the late Ned and Annie Tynan, 5 The Green and Vincent who along with his wife Ellen reared their family at 44 The Green and all were an integral part of the Green and our parish community.
Now the door closes on just one door every working morning. Remarkably, the day has come that at 7.30am the door of Sean Monaghan’s house is the only one that closes to go to work on Bord na Mona. The unimaginable has just happened. Sean, son of the late Jamsie and Lily, grew up with the rest of us, is now the only worker with Bord na Mona that lives on the Green.
We live with the memories of all the people of the Green that gave so much to us in all in so many ways down through the years. We remember the characters and the fun they brought to the community. We remember all of those that got involved in so many activities and committees in our community. We remember the introduction of hurling to Lanesboro by very dedicated men from the Green. We are indebted to so many of them for the formation of so many of our lives as we grew. We were privileged by their presence and we thank all of them for that. The sharing of the cultures of their own counties brought to Lanesboro by these people was part of making Lanesboro a very special place to grow up in and live in.
We wish Mickie and Vincent the very best for along and healthy retirement and hope that it will be a long day before Sean calls time on his job with Bord na Mona.
We live with the wonderful memories of all those workers and we thank them and Bord na Mona for a wonderful friendship.
Easter Arrangements
The arrangements for Easter ceremonies at both St. Mary’s Church Lanesboro and the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague are: Lanesboro:- Holy Thursday 7.30pm, Good Friday 3pm and 7.30pm, Holy Saturday 7.30pm and Easter Sunday 9.30am and 11.30am. Ballyleague:- Holy Thursday 7pm, Good Friday 3pm and 8pm, Holy Saturday 9pm and Easter Sunday 10.30am.
Good Friday – Rural Transport
Please note that all scheduled Rural Transport – Friday Services, throughout the County, will run on Thursday 17th April, with the same collection and departure times.
All age-groups are welcome to travel.
Connaught Title congratulations
Congratulations to Diarmuid Murtagh and his team mates and Ray Cox, selector, and the management team of Roscommon Under21’s who had a very convincing win over Leitrim in the Connaught U21 final in Carrick-on-Shannon on Saturday last. They now face the winners of the Munster U21 final between Cork and Tipperary who play this Wednesday night.
A feature of the Cork panel is Killian Mc Intyre son of former locals Frank (Cloontuskert) and Florence (Harold, Rathcline) who now live in Cork.
Tickets becoming very scarce
Having gone for a walk to the Shannon on Sunday last and seeing the doors of the hall open I ventured in to see what was happening. Rehearsals were taking place for the Lanesboro Got Talent variety show being presented by Shannon Gael Minor Club on Saturday night next 12th April at 8.30pm. To say it was hilarious would be an understatement; it will be an amazing night and most definitely a night that you will not want to miss.
A limited number of tickets are still available in O’Brien’s and Cullen’s are selling very fast at €10 and you should not delay in getting yours.
The very youthful Paul Prior, son of Ciaran and Jacqui, will feature on the piano. Gerard Farrell will sing solo, the hugely popular Shannon Gaels choir, and various Search for a Star acts will also take part. Lacuna a young and extremely popular young band playing a wide mixture of country, Irish and pop will also take to the stage to entertain everyone. The main feature of the evening will be a special version of Mrs. Brown’s Boys featuring the Fayne brothers Alan and Colin, Carmel Linnane, Claire Costello, Mark Cary, Darragh Byrne, Niall Keane, Lauren Guinan and Shane Kenny. MC on the night will be Mickie Farrell who in his own inimitable way will keep the show on the road.
A version of Mrs. Brown’s Boys featuring the Fayne brothers Alan and Colin, Carmel Linnane, Claire Costello, Mark Cary, Darragh Byrne, Niall Keane, Lauren Guinan and Shane Kenny. There is no doubt but the laughter will be uncontrolled and it will be a long time before the memory and smiles on recollection will be erased from ones mind.

Good day for Lough Ree AC
The International Arena in Athlone was the venue for the Roscommon Championships in the Under 9 to 11 age group on Saturday last. A total of 20 athletes turned up for the occasion. In the girls under 9, Aoife Kennelly was the star of the day with great performances in both the 60m and 300m where she had an unusual double and for good measure she got silver in the long jump. Medals were hard to come by on the day and the only other gold medals were won by Cormac O’Dowd in the under 9 sprint and Viktoria Jedrych who won the turbo javelin under 11. Not to be outdone by his brother, Ciaran O’Dowd jumped very well to take the silver medal in the long jump under 10 while Grace Donlon got a bronze medal in the Turbo javelin under 9. Results are sketchy and full results won’t be available for another few days. Well done to all the athletes who competed, once again the venue proved popular and everyone enjoyed the day.
Congratulations to former athletic club member Diarmuid Murtagh on his recent award and his victory last Saturday in winning the Connacht U21 final.

Rathcline Lottery results
The numbers drawn on Saturday night last for the Rathcline lotto were 24, 32, 33, 34, 38 and 39. There was nobody with four of the numbers and the jackpot of €1100 was not won. The four winners of the €25 prizes were George and Jean Mc Dermott, Killashee, Gerard Kirwan, Leopardstown, Dublin, Billy Leavy, Foigha, Ballymahon and Padraig Kenny, Carrowstrawley. The jackpot will have another €100 added for Saturday night raising the pool to €1,200.
Doolan/Cullen School of Dancing
The late Lisa Cullen was a very familiar person in our community where she ran a very successful school of Irish dancing. Her mother, who is slowly coming to terms with the tragic loss of Lisa, is planning to renew the Irish dance classes once run by Lisa. Good Friday Card Game
The annual Rathcline Good Friday card game will take place in St. Mary’s Hall Lanesboro on Friday 18th April – Good Friday- commencing at 9pm. Traditionally this is a great night of card playing with much banter and fun. The style of game is partners and the game is 25. There will be numerous prizes on the night, refreshments will be served and there will be a draw for all those that bought tickets to support the game but were not able to attend. Tickets cost €5 each.
8 Week Pilates Classes
A new 8 week Pilates class will commence on Saturday 19th April in St. Mary’s hall, Lanesboro. Classes are for beginner and level 1 people and the class will start at 11am. The cost of the 8 week course is €80 and must be paid on the first day. If you require further information or want to book your place, contact Karen 086-3967519.
Tragic Death
On Sunday night 30th March Gardaí were called to Coolshaughtana, Weekfield to a reported fire in the area. On arrival they found the remains of Michael Kilcline. Michael, aged just 49, lived with his brother John just off the main Lanesboro Roscommon road. He was a very popular figure locally. He was a man who was a great conversationalist and well respected in the area. He was a hardworking man and those who knew him will be the poor by his death. His remains reposed at the home of Adrian and Brenda Reynolds in Weekfield on Tuesday followed by his removal to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague. Mass of the Resurrection took place on Wednesday and was followed by his burial in Kilteevan Cemetery.
To his brother John, relatives and friends we extend our sincere sympathy.
Death
The death occurred on Monday week last 31st march at Laurel Lodge Nursing Home, Longford, of Angela Hyland, formerly of Blenavoher. Angela was a member of one of the oldest and most respected families in our community. She was a member of first classes to enter Lanesboro Convent of Mercy after they opening their secondary school doors in Lanesboro. She was a lady who a while after her leaving certificate left Lanesboro to work. She was a lady tall in stature and fondly remembered by the many in the parish that knew her.
Her remains were removed from Laurel Lodge, Longford to St. Mary’s Church Lanesboro on Tuesday last and burial, following Requiem Mass took place to Cloontuskert cemetery.
To the extended Hyland families, Blenavoher and Augharana, the Connor family, Augharana, the Dennigan family, Mahoraveen, relatives and friends we extend our sincere sympathy.
Rathcline Ladies
The U16 team will play Carrickedmond in Clonbonny on this Thursday evening at 6.15pm and the seniors will take on Killoe on Sunday. The club looks forward to your support.
Foróige returns on this Friday
For a long time Foróige was a very active club in our community and for some reason it was allowed to lapse. There is a recognition that the young people of Lanesboro and Ballyleague deserve to have an active club in their community. For that reason an information evening will take place in Lanesboro Community College on Friday night next 11th April at 8pm with the view to setting up Lanesboro/Ballyleague Foróige Club.
The organisers invite all parents of young people 12 – 18 years and potential adults volunteers interested in setting up of a Foróige Club are welcome to attend and support this meeting.
Foróige Clubs offer young people the opportunity to run the club themselves in cooperation with their adult volunteers, learn new things, make friends and have a great time along the way.

Rathcline GAA
Congrats to the Rathcline reserve league team who won a dramatic game against Carrickedmond last Saturday. The team showed great character and resilience to win the match by a point. Fair play to all the players who made themselves available. This hopefully kick starts our season in this league.
There was no outright lotto winner this week in our draw. The €25 winners were, Billy Leavy, Gerard Kirwan, George and Jean Mc Dermott and Padraig Kenny. The numbers were 24, 32, 33, 34, 38, and 39.
The Good Friday night 25 card drive is coming up soon, a wonderful way to spend a few hours pitting your wits against the localities card sharks. It’s an annual event and we are hoping people make an effort to attend. More details to follow in the coming weeks.
Sponsorship cards are now available for the Croagh Patrick climb. Contact Gerard and Sarah if you fancy tackling a challenging climb, always an enjoyable social event there was a great crowd from the parish last year. We hope to add to the numbers from last year, it’s open to all ages, so get stretching and get ready to take on the mountain!

Rathcline Ladies: There is a senior ladies match next Sunday in Clonbonny at 12. The ladies take on Killoe, which promises to be a great match, and your support, would be appreciated.
The U 16’s Rathcline team get under way on Thursday evening in Clonbonny. Their first match is against Carrickedmond and throw in is at 6.15. Anyone that witnessed the U 16 final last year will no doubt be looking forward to this match.
It has been pointed out on numerous occasions but registration is now due. It is of the utmost importance that every player is registered. Please contact Madeline or Mike if you have not registered with the club.
Rathcline Minor Club: When our parish comes together, the results can be fantastic, whatever the occasion. This Saturday in my opinion will be one of those occasions. The minor club have put together a variety performance that features a brilliant blend of people from our beloved Rathcline.
Having witnessed a full rehearsal on Sunday last, anticipation should be at fever pitch. The effort by organisers and participants is truly fabulous. There’s song, comedy, and acting of the highest calibre. It will be a great night and people that make the effort to attend, will certainly be entertained. The show starts at 8.30 sharp, tickets on sale in Joe O Brien’s and Cullen’s; they are priced at €10. Support local, you won’t be disappointed!
The minor team had a great win in Drumlish at the weekend, keep up the good work. Hard luck to our U 16 team who lost to Colmcille during the week.

Nature Reserve to Open
Along the Estate road in Newtowncashel you come to a four way crossroads; through that crossroads you enter the townlands of Derrymacar and Derrycolumb. There you will find the nature reserve that will officially open on Saturday 12th April at 3pm. You are all invited to the official opening. This promises to be a wonderful asset to the entire area and a visit to the reserve is highly recommended. The reserve is supported by the Irish Wildlife Trust
