Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes Monday 28th April 2014

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Plea from local Residents

The residents of the small estate of Radharc na Muileann, situated between the Community College and Cnoc na Gaoithe, have in recent times done a remarkable job in making their estate very attractive. This was all done by the local residents themselves and also at their own costs. They are appealing to everyone that walks that area to respect their work by not tossing litter over the wall into the estate. The residents make a special plea to dog owners who on a continual basis throw their dog faeces over the wall to desist and to put it into litter bins situated throughout Lanesboro.

The residents are very proud of their hard work and how well the estate now looks and would like everyone to acknowledge it by not littering the area.

The results of the competition for 23rd April are; 1st Frank and Frances Brennan, 2nd Mona O’Flaherty and Bernadette Gillen, and a tie for 3rd place between Gemma Douglas and Elish Gray & Loretto Cooney and Freda Kenny.

Eddie hits 100

Many congratulations to Eddie Farrell, formerly of Tullyvrane, who on Saturday next will hit the magical age of 100. Eddie, in his youth, played with Rathcline and also held positions in the club. We wish him a wonderful day on Saturday and many more years.

Engagement

Many congratulations to Alicia Mc Dermott, Cnoc na Gaoithe, daughter of Mary and the late Alex Mc Dermott, Lisnacusha on her recent announcement to Walter Halloran, son of Walter and Kathleen Halloran, Westport, Co. Mayo.

The value of our Fire Station

It has been a long time coming and last week was a great one for the entire community as work commenced on the Longford Road of the new fire station in Lanesboro. There has been much toing and froing in an effort to get the new station up and running. It was not until a further €80,000 was announced recently that gave the project the impetuous to proceed. The funding for the new station will be €780,000.

The value of our fire station and the fire brigade crew has become increasingly vital to our entire area. The station has a very dedicated crew of 9, all retained, and they do an astounding job year in year out. On average our local fire brigade is called out once a week with over 50 call outs recorded in the past year. All of the crew are trained first responders and have a wealth of medical knowledge which is a compulsory part of the job because of the many various incidents they attend. As much as we think that the fire brigade is about fire, its purpose is much more varied and a lot of the time health related, so their ability to deal with health and injury issues until ambulances and doctors arrive is very vital.

The fire brigade has been called out for many different incidents: house fires, car fires, road traffic accidents, bog fires and AED emergencies. As you can see the reasons the brigade is called are wide and varied and the range of expertise must also be the same to cover every eventuality that they face when the beeper goes and they face into the unknown.

We have a great fire brigade crew and we should acknowledge and thank the past and current crews of Lanesboro Fire Brigade for the great work they do and have done over the years. We look forward to them being in their new station before year end and spending many more successful years working within our community.

Good Luck

We would like to wish Diarmuid Murtagh and his fellow players and Ray Cox and his fellow team mentors the very best of luck on Saturday next in Tullamore when Roscommon take on Dublin in the All-Ireland U21 final.

The Cullen family on the Rathcline Road will have their feet in the Dublin camp as Ronan’s nephew Conor Mc Hugh will be attempting to destroy Roscommon’s dream.

Well done to Ciarán Murtagh and his fellow Roscommon players  and Wally Burke and his fellow team management on their great win in the Division 3 league final in Croke Park on Saturday last.

Gathering Meeting

Last year the Gathering was an outstanding success in Lanesboro and it is hoped that this year it will be even bigger and better than ever. There will be a meeting in Adie’s meeting room on Wednesday 7th May ay 9pm. It is hoped that there will be a big number of local attending with some wonderful ideas as to how to make this year’s event more distinctive and creative. Come along, join the party and let’s make August Bank Holiday very special in Lanesboro. The town will be alive with the sound of music and much much more – be part of it.

Monthly Whist Drive

Lanesboro Social Services will hold their monthly whist drive in St. Mary’s hall on this coming Friday night 2nd May at 8.30pm. As you may know the work done by this small and dedicated group within our community is fantastic. All of their work is unseen and unheard but from year to year they are a most supportive group in our community and they deserve to be supported at every hands turn. Please go along on Friday night and make it a great night of card playing and enjoy a great night. As usual refreshments will be served and your support will be greatly appreciated.

Historical Re-enactment Meeting

There has been a tremendous reaction to the proposed historical reenactment of a 19th century event that occurred in Lanesboro involving Parnell and Michael Davitt.

There will be a meeting in the front room of St. Mary’s Hall on Tuesday 6th May at 9pm. Everyone that has expressed an interest and those that feel they may be interested in taking part in what should be a memorable occasion are invited to come along.

Historical re-enactments do not happen very often in our area and it would be wonderful to have a big crowd showing a great interest in creating something very special in Lanesboro during the summer.

Come along and be part of something fantastic – the invite goes to both young and old and it would be great to see a great cross section of our community at this meeting.

As has been seen with the Shannon Gaels Variety show there is a huge amount of talent in every sphere and we would welcome their expertise along with the expertise within our community.

Tidy Towns Adjudication Approaching

Lanesboro has four weeks to get ready for Tidy Towns judging, it is due due in the first/second week of June. If you can paint a front wall or gate, pick some litter, sweep a footpath, put up a hanging basket or window box, it will  help the town to continue its progress in the National Tidy Towns competition. A newsletter outlining our progress during the year will be available at the weekend, in the church porch and in local shops. As part of the national clean-up campaign, a clean-up of our town will take place on this Thursday 1st May from 8 to 9pm. It will concentrate on three areas including the Longford Road, the back lane of the Green and the trees around the track. Please meet at the Green, opposite the Church at 7.55pm

Tina Dowd and Annette Farrell made history on Monday evening last. Both ladies have worked hard in getting and preparing an U12 team and for the first time ever the Rathcline Ladies have fielded an U12 team. It is a great honour for the two ladies and also for the young players who we hope in time will be leading players in all grades. We wish all the very best of luck and support. The U12s will play their games every Monday.

Our U14 team was defeated last Thursday by Clonguish.

The U16s have a game this Thursday evening in Clonbonny at 6pm.

The club would like to say a big thank you to everyone who continues to support our scratch and win tickets.

Thank you: The club is extremely grateful to everyone that took part in ‘Lanesboro’s got Talent’ which was an outstanding success and had to be put on for a second night. The groups that took part in the many sketches were absolutely fantastic. It was a wonderful show with a wide variety and some tremendous performances. To make all this happen was not done on the night but with the help of an excellent back up team who did so much work behind the scenes. The club is deeply grateful to everyone who worked on making the two shows such a success. It was fantastic night and believe me another big night is being planned for a future date. The club is in the very lucky situation to have such an excellent group of event planners who never seem to rest and we are glad they don’t.

Lanesboro got Talent DVD is now available in O’Brien’s priced €10 and they are selling very quickly. Don’t miss the opportunity to relive the great night.

Good luck to Shane Kenny and the Longford minor who travel to Drogheda to take on Louth in the Leinster minor championship at 7.15pm. We also wish Gareth Johnston, team manager, and Cian O’Brien, sector and their fellow management team the very best and every success.

Rathcline GAA

The club would like to acknowledge and congratulate former player, Secretary and Treasurer Eddie Farrell, formerly of Tullyvrane, who on Saturday next 3rd May will reach the milestone of 100 years.

Well done to our senior team who defeated Moydow in Moydow on Saturday evening last. This was achieved with a number of players absent for different reasons. On Friday night next at 8pm we take on Kenagh in Clonbonny. This is the last game in Division 2 for a few weeks and we hope that all players are again fit and well for this very important game.

All players are asked to make big efforts for training and in between to be getting in some extra training of their own. The championship is nearing and it is very important that everyone gets up to championship pace as we try to regain senior status by winning the Intermediate championship. All shoulders are expected to be put to the wheel to make that push for senior status and this can only happen with everyone  single minded and working hard towards achieving this goal.,

Good luck to Shane, Gareth and Cian and the Longford minors on Thursday evening in Louth.
