Final Whist Drive of the Season
The final Whist Drive of the season will take place on this Friday night 6th June in St. Mary’s hall at 8.30pm. As this is the final ‘drive’ of the season it would be wonderful for the hard working Lanesboro Social Services committee if they could get a great send off with a huge attendance. Be there for a bumper night of card playing.
Departure of Sisters of Mercy
Bishop Francis Duffy will celebrate a Mass to mark the departure of the Sisters of Mercy from Lanesboro after 62 years in Lanesboro. The Mass will take place in St. Mary’s Church on Friday 13th June at 7pm. Please notify everyone you know that may have left the area or attended the national or secondary school down through the years as they may like to come back for this special Mass.
Birth
We extend our congratulations to Fintan Duffy and Patricia Brady, Church View on the recent birth of a baby boy.
Summer Bridge
Summer Bridge will commence on this Wednesday evening 4th June in the Co-Op hall. The game will start at 8pm sharp. Summer Bridge will continue every Monday and Wednesday evening at 8pm throughout the summer. All bridge players are invited to come along.

Rural Text Alert
The Rural text alert group would like to congratulate our chairman and part founder Gerard Farrell on his recent election to the local county council.
Rathcline GAA Lotto
The numbers drawn on Saturday night last in the Rathcline GAA lottery were 2, 3, 6, 20, 27 and 32. There was nobody with four of the numbers drawn and the jackpot of €400 was not won. The four winners of the €25 prizes were Gerry Cox, Doughill, Jimmy Hussey, Ballyleague, Niall and Breda Walsh, Clonbonny and Cian and Cóilín O’Brien, Clonfower.
The jackpot for Saturday night next will now rise to €500.

Tax reclaim forms are still available in the porch of St. Mary’s church. With your support in filling out and returning the forms offers the parish the opportunity to recouping this money and use it towards the repaying of the outstanding debt on our now magnificently refurbished church. This is money that you have already paid in tax and it is a great opportunity for your parish to avail of that money. This is applicable to PAYE workers and I urge everyone to get a form in the church porch and return it as soon as possible.
Pike Angling Club
On Sunday 8th June Lanesboro Pike Angling club will be holding the annual Michael Casey perpetual trophy boat pike fishing competition on Lough Ree. Fishing will be from 11.00am to 4.00pm. The entry fee will be taken from 10.30am at Lanesboro harbour down past the car park. The entry fee is €30 per boat with a maximum of 2 rods per person and 4 rods per boat. All money taken in entry fees will be given out in prize money.
This is a member`s only competition. Membership may be taken out on the day, adults €10 juniors and O.A.P`S €5.
Following the weigh in the presentation will take place in the Yacht Bar.
There will also be a draw for non-fishing members for a 40” television and other cash prizes.

Lanesboro Library – World War One

Exam Time
All Junior and Leaving Certificate exam commence this Wednesday. We would like to wish every student doing exams the very best of luck and we are sure that all their hard work will pay off.

The Gathering 2014 is presently being organised. If you would like to play your part and/or have ideas as to how the festival can be made better then you are invited to attend the weekly meeting in Adie’s meeting room on a Monday nights at 9pm. The group is open to everyone that wants to play their part in continuing the development of what was a wonderful weekend last year. Going forward we are seeking to make Lanesboro vibrant and a fun place to be on August Bank Holiday weekend.
Rathcline Lottery
The numbers drawn on Saturday night last 24th May were 2, 11, 21, 27, 30 and 41. There was nobody with four of the numbers drawn and the jackpot of €300 was not won. The four winners of the €25 prizes were Aidan Mc Weeney, Curraghroe, George and Jean Mc Dermott, Killashee, Alan Skelly, Aughamore, Lanesboro and Michael Murray, Barnacor. The jackpot for Saturday night next will now stand at €400.
Siamsa
An Irish language summer course (Siamsa) will take place from Monday 7th July to Friday 11th July on Gaelscoil Longfoirt. The course will take place from 9.30am to 3pm each day and will cater for students from second class to first year in second level. Sunday Bingo
Bingo will take place on Sunday next 8th June at the Clonguish Complex, Newtownforbes on at 3.00pm. There will be a prize fund of €2500.
Championship Fever Weekend
On both sides of the bridge it will be championship fever next weekend. The excitement of the championship always brings a special buzz and I hope that everyone, that can, will get out and support their county teams and cheer them on to achieve memorable victories.
It all begins on Saturday at noon when local lads Eoin and Rory Donnellan will take to the green sward of Croke Park with the Longford hurlers when they take on Fermanagh in the Lory Meagher cup final.
At 7pm on Saturday the Longford seniors will renew, what is now yearly championship, rivalry with Wexford in the Leinster senior championship. It is great to have them at home and hopefully they can lay the hex to rest and emerge victors. We have no locals on the panel but we still wish the team every success.
All roads on Sunday will lead to Roscommon’s Hyde Park where Roscommon will take on All Ireland finalists, Mayo, in the first round of the Connaught championship at 2pm. We wish team players, the Murtagh brothers Ciaran and Diarmuid and selector Wally Burke and the entire team and management the very best of luck.
Community College Wins U16 title
On Monday the 19th May, played in ideal conditions, Rathcline club grounds in Clonbonny played host to the Longford “B” Post Primary Schools County final between Lanesboro Community College and Granard Convent.
Lanesboro CC started very well with a couple of well taken scores from Shane Philips, Jonathan Hussey and Conor Smyth. Cnoc Mhuire fought their way back and 15 minutes into the game the sides were level. The decisive score in the first half came from a great team move from Lanesboro which ended with the ball at the feet of Shane Philips who finished spectacularly. However if it wasn’t for a fantastic save from Lanesboro goalie, Michael O’Donnell, the score line could have been a lot different at half time.
The second half was a much different affair, with Lanesboro CC dominating midfield and providing an attacking platform for the forwards. Jordan Donlon and Dylan Clancy took some fine points and Michael Cox made an outstanding run up the field to set up another point. Granard Convent fought back bravely but could only muster one score in the second half and much credit must go to the full back line in this regard.
In the end, Lanesboro Community College ran out comfortable winners and Captain Kevin Sorohan was presented with the plaque. To quote Joe Rooney “There is outstanding talent in this bunch; with club and school they are winning county finals and we would hope that they push on next year to do well in the senior schools competition” Congratulations to all concerned.
Shannon Gaels Minor Club
The club would like to extend their deepest sympathy to the family of the late Brian Collum, Drumlish and the Fr. Manning Gaels club on the sudden death of Brian last week.
On Thursday next our U12 team, having won their first two games, will travel to the Laurels to play Northern Gaels at 7pm.
The club wishes Eoin and Rory Donnellan and the Longford hurlers the very best of luck in the Lory Meagher Final in Croke Park on Saturday.
The club wishes the longford seniors the very best of luck as they take on Wexford on Saturday at 7pm. We urge full support for the county team.

Rathcline GAA
The 7th round of the reserve league took place in Clonbonny against a strong Ballymahon team. There was decent football throughout the match, with the game memorable for excellent point taking from both teams. It was a tight affair, with Ballymahon down by a point at halftime on a scoreline of 1-8 to 1-7. Both teams traded scores in the second half, and Rathcline found themselves 3 points up with around 10 minutes remaining. Ballymahon were dangerous in attack and took their goal chances when they arrived late in the second half. The final score from Clonbonny was Rathcline 1-16 Ballymahon 4-12.Thanks to all who prepared the pitch and facilities especially Johnny Hanley and Mike Greene.
The Rathcline Club Lotto was not won this week. The numbers drawn were 2,3,6,20,27, and 32. €25 weekly winners were Niall and Breda Walsh, Gerry Cox, Jimmy Hussey and Cian and Coilin O Brien.
Rathcline Minor Club
The U 14’s play Colmcille in the league final in Grattans at 7.30 on Tuesday evening. The lads and management have put in huge effort to reach the final. From all in Rathcline we wish the stars of the future the best of luck; your support would be welcome!
The minors and U 16’s train every Tuesday and Friday evening. We encourage all players to come out and train and do your parish proud.
The U 12’s had two wins this last week; they defeated Drumlish and Southern Gaels. An excellent team with a work rate all over the pitch. They play Northern Gaels on Thursday evening. Please check fixture list for time and venue.
They say teams comes and goes, if the training numbers for U 6’s, U8’s and U 10’s continues then the future might be looking good for Rathcline. It’s wonderful to see parents and players getting involved every Friday out in Clonbonny. Keep up the good work!
