Local Championship Begins

All roads will lead to Strokestown on Sunday evening next when St. Faithleach’s open their senior championship campaign with a tough challenge against Strokestown. The fact that the opening game happens to be a local derby only adds spice to what be a tightly fought game with a lot of local pride at stake. There is little or nothing between the sides with both of them in joint fourth place in the league which will ensure a tight close game.  It is expected that a huge number of club supporters along with a big representation from the Rathcline parish will be in attendance to support and cheer the Faithleach’s players to victory. The throw in is timed for 6.45pm so there is no excuse to miss cheering on St. Faithleach’s.

Mark is new Lord Mayor

For the next 12 months not only will be privileged to have two councillors but Friday last 6th June was a momentous evening in the Longford County Council chambers when Mark Casey was elected to be Mayor of Longford county.

This is a historic event for Mark as it is for the county as it has been a long time since there has been a mayor of the full county. Following the recent abolition of the town councils of Longford and Granard, Mark will assume the mayorship for the full county.

It is a momentous day for Mark, his wife Bernie, sons Brein, Cormac, daughter Niamh, mother Mae, relatives and friends. We congratulate Mark and wish him every success for a wonderful year ahead.

Lough Ree AC

Sligo I.T. was the venue for the Connaught U9 to U12 athletic championships on Saturday last. Twenty plus youngsters travelled to the Sligo venue with quite a few adults. The club went ‘more in hope than in confidence” as this fixture is based on a twosome team competition (except U12 age group). The club, having a small population base, one can have an outstanding athlete (and we had) but to have two, doing the same event and in the same age group, is against all the odds. The youngsters were informed, if they achieved, a personal best, whether it brought them 1st or 21st they should be pleased. Bye and large, the day followed that course.

Victoria Jedrych had her best throw in the U11 Turbo Javelin. In the U12 High Jump, Alannah Flood (4th) went out at 2.12cm, the three left in medal positions failed at 2.14cm, while Aoife Kennelly won her heat in the 60m U11. Better was to come! Aoife teamed up with Aisling O’Dowd in the 300m and got silver medals for the 2nd team. This “Kennelly kid” is something else! She had the second fastest time in the 60m sprint and the fastest time in the 300m (girl’s event). Indeed, only two boys ran faster. A pleasant surprise, as it is a while since the club figured so prominently in a middle distance event.

Then to crown the day, the amplification announces that our “pocket battleship” Róisín Brennan was second in the Turbo Javelin. When the Turbo Javelin was introduced two years ago instead of the Ball throw, Róisín bought her own javelin, need we say more?

That being said, Rachael Donlon could not have been far behind.

Compliments to Padraic O’Dowd for covering the Co. Longford Community Games Art competition in the morning and then proceeding on to Sligo. It was a very long day for all, yet time had to be made to visit Supermacs on the way home as well as the visit to the soldier on horseback outside Boyle.

Next Saturday the older age groups will be in action at the same Sligo venue.

Triathlon Club – Aquathon

On Wednesday week 18th June, the Lanesboro Triathlon Club will host an Aquathon event which is part of the Midland Interclub Series (Aquathon series between Lanesboro, Longford, Midland and Athlone Triathlon Clubs). Individual and relay entrants are welcome. Now in its 3rd year, the Aquathon is a 750m swim followed by a 5k run. Registration closes at 7pm and the swim start shall take place at 7:30pm sharp in the lake beside the duck pond. The run is an out and back route which shall head towards the quarry and exit out onto the Rathcline road, and proceed to a turnaround point shortly before Harold’s Cross. We welcome locals to come out and support the athletes and enjoy the buzz of the event. Can we also please request that all motorists take extra caution travelling the rathcline road on the evening of 18th June between 7:30 and 9pm, as many runners will be on the route. There shall be refreshments and prize giving in the Co-op hall afterwards. The triathlon fever is really building around the town these days, as the club is also currently very busy preparing for our upcoming Triathlon and Kidathon events on July 12th. Due to its over whelming popularity, the adult race has already SOLD OUT with 525 plus entrants registered, and a small number of the 125 places are still up for grabs in the kidathon. Our main sponsors for the Triathlon and Kidathon currently include Brennan’s Bread, Waterways Ireland and Mc Sharry Plant Sales. Please see www.twoprovincestriathlon.com for further information on all races.

Many congratulations to our U14 team on a wonderful win in the Division 2 league Final played in Dunbeggan Park on Tuesday last. The lads really turned on the style and ran out convincing winners on a scoreline of 5-21 to Colmcilles 5-4. The team had been evolving greatly throughout the competition under the management team of Mark Clancy, manager and PJ Farrell and Jimmy Ruske selectors. Joint captains Dylan Clancy and Conor Campbell lifted the cup on behalf of the club. It is a testimony to the work being done with all the teams that rewards are finally coming their way.
