The next social evening will take place on Sunday 27th July in Clarke’s bar from 5pm to 7pm.

One way of helping to alleviate some of the outstanding church debt is by filling out the tax relief forms that are available in the church porch. Death

The death took place on Thursday 19th June at Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe of Jim Corkery, Shannon Heights, Ballyleague. James was a big framed man whose gentle manner and warmth of heart endeared him to everyone that came in contact with him. A number of years back along with his partner Phil, they moved to Ballyleague where they immediately fitted into the local community.  He was a quiet spoken man and mild mannered and his passing will leave a void in the hearts and minds of everyone that came to know him. James was a great community man and wonderful neighbour.

His remains reposed at Farrell’s Funeral Home on Friday last and on Saturday his remains were removed to the Church of the Holy Rosary for his Funeral Mass. Following Mass his remains were laid to rest in Cloontuskert cemetery.

To his partner Phil, family and friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Birth

Many congratulations to Thomas Donohoe and Maeve Mc Bride, Rathcline Road on the birth last weekend of a baby girl.

Lough Ree AC

Another busy weekend on the athletic front between All-Irelands for the U9 to U11 age groups in Tullamore and the Co. Longford Community Games finals in Ballymahon. To their great credit, Aoife Kennelly and Aisling O’Dowd had qualified from Connaught for the National Finals and travelled to the Co. Offaly venue on Saturday. No; the eight year olds did not come home with medals but they and their parents came back with lots of experience which will stand to them in the future.

Not having the full Community Games results, better give them a miss and hoping they will be feature elsewhere in this paper. Orla Keane maybe disappointed with her form in Sligo, she is still the best U14 sprinter in Longford. Well done to Niamh Chawke for being the only girl from the county to turn up for the U16 1500m. Disappointed to see only 4 parishes from the county could field a 4x100m relay team. Are Longford teenagers lazy?

Well done to all the youngsters who represented the parish of Rathcline, Win or lose, you did us proud!

Lanesboro Tri Cub Aquathon

Last Wednesday, June 18th, was a busy evening in Lanesboro as members of neighbouring clubs made their way to the 2nd Aquathon Race in the Midland Interclub Series.  The Aquathon, which consists of a 750m swim in the Shannon followed by a 5k run up the Rathcline Rd.,  had over 100 participants in the race which was a good rehearsal for our sprint triathlon which will take place on July 12th. We couldn’t have asked for better weather, with the sun glistening on the waters of Lough Ree as the swimmers entered the water. The heat added to the challenge of the run with one entrant questioning, “How do you do it here in Lanesboro? Everytime there is a race you manage to organise the good weather too!” Big congrats to all the entrants who completed the race, a special mention to our own club member Marie Sudway who was the first lady home. It was great to see the Lanesboro club colours out in force on the evening. Well done to all. The race would not have taken place without the team of marshals from around Lanesboro and neighbouring areas who came out to show their support for the club. To everyone who donned a high vis jacket, kayaked or supported us in boats, to those clubs, societies and local businesses that have always supported our events, to all our members who put on a fabulous display of food in the hall to show hospitality to our visitors after the race, many many thanks. Details of results can be seen on our race website www.twoprovincestriathlon.com

If you would like to be part of the action of our triathlon on Saturday July 12th, without having to take part why not get involved by marshalling on the day. It’s a great way of having a bird’s eye view of what happens in a triathlon. We’d love all our locals to play a part on the day. To sign up to marshal just email racedirector@trilanesboro.com.
