Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Rathcline Cemetery on Sunday next

Rathcline cemetery, on Sunday next 6th July, will be the first cemetery in the parish of Rathcline to celebrate the blessing of the graves. It is very important that everyone with family graves in the graveyard to make a special effort during the coming week to ensure that the graveyard is looking in pristine condition for the blessing of the graves which will be followed by mass. The blessing will take place at 6pm A cemetery maintenance collection will take place on Sunday at Rathcline.

On Sunday week 13th July, Lanesboro cemetery will celebrate the blessing of the graves in the cemetery followed by Clonbonny cemetery on Sunday 20th July. It is very important that families with family graves in the two mentioned graveyards make every effort that they too are in excellent condition for their particular Sundays.

Death

It was with great sadness and regret that we learned of the death on Wednesday 25th June at Cloverhill Nursing Home of Paddy Greene, Main Street. Paddy a native of Curraghroe has been a feature of our Main Street as long as I can remember. He had been in failing health for a short period of time. He was always a warm and friendly man, always a wonderful neighbour and always thoroughly dependable. Paddy was one of the first workers into Bord na Mona and when the Power station was completed he was one of the first men employed there with ESB. Paddy will be remembered by locals as the local taxi man. He had a great love of farming and he was always working at his homestead in Curraghroe. Paddy had a wealth of local knowledge and he had a wonderful interest in all things local. His passing will, no doubt, sadden the hearts of all the people that encountered Paddy as they went up and down the street over the years – a large part of our town’s history has been taken from us.

His remains reposed at his residence on Friday before the removal of his remains to St. Mary’s Church. Following his Funeral Mass his remains were interred at Clonbonny cemetery. To his wife Ann, sons Mark and Paul, daughters, Kay, Fiona and Susie, brothers, PJ and Eamon, relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Birth

Congratulations to Evelyn and Anthony Farrell, Gortgallon on the birth last week a baby girl.

Race Day in Lanesboro

The sun shone brightly as the participants started to arrive for the Gathering G2 2014 Road race. There were two routes one of 10K and the second of 6K. A big number turned out on a beautiful day on the banks of the Shannon to take part in the race and support this year’s Gathering. There was not a cloud in the sky nor a breeze coming off the lake as the competitors lined up for the start of the race. The route to begin with took the runners and walkers down through the quarry, up through the woods where they emerged onto the Rathcline Road and onwards to Harold’s cross where the 6K runners and walkers turned left to cross Bullockstown while the 10K runners and walkers headed up the tough climb to the top of the hill of Carraroe where they turned down through Lisrevagh and onto Killinure and back to Tullyvrane when both runners of the 6k and 10 K again joined up. Back in along the Ballymahon Road and back to the car park. It was a wonder day for running and it was also great for spectating. There in not a better sight than standing at the corner on a day such as Sunday last and seeing  runners coming down the hill from the church on the final stretch of their run. The first man home in the 10K was Patrick Sharkey, Longford, first lady home in the 10K was Maura Derwin. The first runner home in the 6K was Johnny Kilcoyne and the first young runner was the excellent Kevin Tansey.

For the second year in a row a wonderful community spirit is displayed by the many that made themselves available for helping out on the day. Apart from the gathering group there was wonderful support from Lanesboro Triathlon club led by Niall O’Donoghue, who travelled back from Kilkee in County Clare after taking part in the notorious Hell of the West Triathlon and Brendan O’Sullivan, The Lough Ree Athletic club led by Mark Brady and Fabian Walsh, the excellent time keepers Margaret Mullooly and Susan Keane and the Donlon family in Lisreevagh who without prompting organised a water station for the runners. We must also say a big thank you to Rathcline club secretary Sarah Kearney for her assistance. We must also pay tribute to our youngest helper on the day, Molly Farrell, who did her duties so excellently at registration.  We would like to thank all the motorists for their care and consideration to our runners. We were overseen on the road by local Garda sergeant Martina Reddington and the local Gardaí. Our committee members were as usual to the fore and we are extremely grateful for all the support we received on the day. There is no doubt but we have a wonderful and spirited community and we are very proud of them for all their support and help that is always available. A huge thank you to everyone from the bottom of our hearts.

Class Reunion

Saturday 21st June was a momentous day for one Class from St Joseph’s, Convent of Mercy, Lanesborough, for this was the exact date that many of the class did their final Leaving Certificate exams forty years ago. The organisation was ongoing for some months and for various reasons some members of the class couldn’t make it on the night – sons and daughters getting married, graduations, holidays and work commitments but nonetheless eighteen very happy ladies turned up at the Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone.

The group met at 6pm for drinks and photographs and this proved a great opportunity to catch up and the years melted away. This was followed by a fabulous dinner in a private room and the party was very impressed with everything in the hotel. Sr Rosarii joined the group for part of the celebration. Her arrival evoked much nostalgia amongst the group. Bernie Harold spoke of her fond memories of Sr Immaculata (RIP) and the efforts she made to educate us on Classical music and how that has stayed with her all her life. She also paid tribute to the other sisters who had given their lives to the education of the young girls of Lanesborough and the surrounding areas. Many of those present had been unaware that the convent is for sale and the remaining sisters leaving Lanesborough soon after 61 years and they were very sad to hear this.

There was a presentation to Sr Rosarii as a small tribute to her and her fellow sisters for their dedication and the sacrifices they made in the service of others. Those who attended on the night travelled from far and wide including the UK and this is much appreciated by the organisers Geraldine Gilhooley (Kirwan) and Bernie Harold. We wish the sisters currently resident in the Convent of Mercy, Lanesborough every happiness in their new homes and ask them Ná bheith inastrainséir.

Those that attended and pictured below were; Elizabeth Carroll, Rathcline, Deirdre Carty, Salmons Lane, Kathleen Connaughton, Newtowncashel, Mary Clancy, Boyle, Co Roscommon, Ita Donlon, Killenure, Catherine Donnellan, Ballyleague, Mary Dowd, Killenure, Geraldine Feeney, Rathcline, May Hanley, Ballagh, Ann Marie Harold, Ballyleague, Bernie Harold, Rathcline,

Kathleen Kelly, Newtowncashel, Mary Kelly, Cloontuskert, Geraldine Kirwan, The Green, Christina Lindsay, Cloontuskert, Phil Suffin, Cloontuskert and Rose Tully, Belturbet, Co Cavan.

The beauty of Lanesboro and Ballyleague

On a day like Sunday last there was nowhere in the world that quite equalled the beauty of Lanesboro and Ballyleague. With the tremendous work done by the communities on the two sides of the bridge really paying off with both sides looking absolutely fabulous and drawing much comment about our area that makes us rightly proud.  On a sunny Sunday there is always a draw on locals to the river and Sunday last was no different. On arrival the locals found a huge number of people who travelled to avail of the beauty that our area has to offer.

We congratulate both Tidy Towns and the local people for their great work and making our area so attractive and beautiful.

It is always great to hear such positive comments by both visitors and locals alike.

A very enjoyable day was had by a large contingent of local golfers at Portumna Golf Course on Thursday last 26th June.

The front nine with a great score of 20 points was won by Mick Healy, the back nine with 18 points went to Peter Day; 3rd on 37 points net was John James O’Shea, second with a good 39 points went to Joe Conmy, and the first prize was won by Colm Dardis with a superb 41 points. The ladies prize was won by Fiona Gillen on 32 points and nearest the pin on the 18 was won by Paul Farrell. Lanesboro Tri Club

Last weekend saw 13 Lanesboro Tri Club members head to the seaside village of Kilkee to take on Limerick Tri Club’s Olympic distance triathlon, Hell of the West. Huge efforts had been put in by the local community and Clare County Council to repair the area after the destruction of the winter storms. Over 1200 athletes took part in the 30th anniversary of the race, which included some of the very best athletes in the country seeking points in this National Championship event. Renowned as one of the toughest triathlons in the country, athletes were surprised this year to enter calm waters in Kilkee’s horse-shoe bay, as they began the harrowing challenge of a 1500m sea-swim, 44km cycle against the winds of West Clare and 10km hilly run along the rugged coastline of Loop Head. All Lanesboro Tri Club participants took to the challenge with gusto which resulted in excellent individual performances by all. Huge congrats to Lanesboro lady Marie Sudway who crossed the line in 2:34, picking up the prize for 1st lady in her age category. Congrats to our first male over the line Sean Farrell, who put in a tremendous race, in a time of 2:24 followed hot on his heels 20 seconds later by club secretary Mark Kenny. Colm Daly just missed out on a prize but still managed to be placed 5th in his age category. Well done to all our club members who took on this challenge, who were delighted with their own personal achievements and are already planning signing up to next year’s race. A great weekend was had by all.

Two Provinces Triathlon Race Update

The club members are now in the thick of preparation for the fourth Two Provinces Sprint Triathlon, which takes place on July 12th. The next two weeks will be a busy time as everyone works together to ensure the race lives up to its reputation of previous years. For the second year in a row, the race is selected by Triathlon Ireland as one of its National Series sprint races for both adult and junior categories. This is a true testament to the quality of the race and local amenities. Great credit must be given to the local tidy towns committees on both sides of the bride, and gathering committees for having the local communities looking so impeccable for all our visiting athletes and supporters. The ‘Two Provinces Triathlon’ race ascendancy on the popularity scale yearly is a fitting reward for the hard work put in by all past and present race organisers, as going to press the adult race has already sold out with over 550 entrants.

The race could not run smoothly without the support and hard work of all the local clubs, societies, businesses and individuals, and the Lanesboro triathlon club is extremely grateful for all the assistance from marshalling to putting up signs, to handing out refreshments, to providing heartfelt encouragement to all partakers etc. The race committee would like to relay a special note of thanks to the main race sponsors who are crucial to the success of the race, namely Brennan’s Bread, Waterways Ireland & Mc Sharry Plant Sales. We are delighted to have them on board as without their fantastic support, we could not possibly stage such a superb event.

The club is concentrating on incorporating the spectators to make it an all-inclusive affair with music by local DJs, bouncing castles and food stalls. We want to make it a very enjoyable family occasion and we’re determined to stretch it into a long-term yearly fixture so it’s important that it has a festival vibe too.

Finally, for health and safety during the National Series Sprint Triathlon on Saturday July 12th, the following road closures are going to be in place: (a) The R371 from Ballyleague to Scramogue on the 12th of July 2014 from 10.45am to 2pm (b) The Rathcline road from O’Brien’s corner to Harold’s Cross on the 12th of July 2014 from 11:30am to 2pm. We as a club take great pride in hosting a race where water and road safety are a priority, as we want every competitor, whatever their fitness level, to come home safely and enjoy their experience. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary road closures, and hope you can come out and support all the athletes along the route during this fantastic local race.

For further information on entrants, timetables, courses and much more please see our race website www.twoprovincestriathlon.com

Rathcline Ladies

Huge congratulations to the U12 team who had a wonderful performance in winning their first game at this age group. They travelled to Colmcille and beat the local side. There was no U12 side in the club until Tina Dowd and Annette Farrell got a group of enthusiastic young girls together and after a lot of effort and preparation they got their due reward with this fantastic win.

The U16 year came to an end last week. Their year in terms of silverware was empty but the girls showed great resolve and their hard work will pay off in time to come. They had a very dedicated management team of Steve Peters, Pauric Farrell, Brendan O’Sullivan and Marie Peters.

The seniors will play the first round of the championship on Wednesday 9th July in Clonbonny. It is hoped that a big crowd will turn up to support the ladies.

The U14 team will play their semi-final on Thursday 10th July.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club

Following two games in Division 1 of the Minor league on Monday and Friday last we came out on the losing side of both games. Despite putting in strong performances we just could get the victory over the two strongest teams in the division, namely, Northern Gaels and Clonguish Óg. The lads are putting in huge efforts and we are sure they will get their rewards.

The U16 will play Ardagh in Clonbonny in the special juvenile league.

The U14 continue to train every Tuesday and Saturday.

Our U12 play Ballymahon on Thursday in Ballymahon.

U6 to U10 – As we are now in holiday mode it is very important that the regime that you have been adhering to over the past few months remains and that there are big numbers at training. We understand there is greater pressure to do other things but we urge you to keep your commitment to training and games every week.

World Cup cards – we encourage everyone within the minor club to buy at least one of the senior club’s scratch cards for the World Cup final. It is very important that we as a club support this initiative by the seniors. When you buy your ticket you scratch off the marked area and you find your time for the first goal being scored in the World Cup final. It is a novel idea by the club. The tickets are only €2 each and are on sale from executive members or from O’Brien’s.

The world cup scratch cards are selling well, and we would like to thank everyone who has purchased tickets. You are in with a chance of winning €500 if you have the ticket that has the exact time of the first goal in this year’s world cup final. Thanks to all our diligent sellers and a big push is needed over the coming weeks to get all the tickets sold. We would urge the parish to get behind this fundraiser as money raised will go towards the loan on pitch.

Well done to our U 12 girls team who defeated Colmcille in the first game of the summer league. It was hard luck to the U 16 ladies as Ballymahon defeated them in the A championship semi-final last Thursday. The team had a poor 1st half and were always chasing the game. But they did themselves proud with a gutsy 2nd half display, with at one stage the Rathcline ladies a point up. Ballymahon drew away again with 10 minutes left and the Rathcline ladies couldn’t break down the Ballymahon defence. Thanks to the team for their wonderful effort all year, to all the parents and supporters who have followed the girls throughout the season, and a special thanks to the management team of Steve Peters, Padhraig Farrell, Brendan O Sullivan and Marie Peters.

Our clothes collection continues and is a worthwhile fundraiser, all clothes welcome!please contact Madeline or Mike to organise.
