Cemetery Sunday moves on to Lanesboro cemetery
Next Sunday 13th July, Lanesboro cemetery will celebrate the blessing of the graves in the cemetery followed by Clonbonny cemetery on Sunday 20th July. It is very important that families with family graves in the two mentioned graveyards make every effort that they too are in excellent condition for their particular Sundays.
Flower Planting Draw
Lanesboro Tidy Towns committee is holding a draw to raise funds to help towards the Flower Planting carried out by the committee over the past number of weeks. The draw will finish on Saturday next as it is being held in conjunction with the sprint triathlon that take place in the area next Saturday.
Tickets only cost €2 each and everyone in the area is encouraged to support the draw. Your support will mean a lot to the committee.
Lanesboro G2 Festival
Last year it was the called ‘the Gathering’ this year it is called Lanesboro G2 Festival and plans are almost completed for, what we are sure will be, another great festival that will run from Friday 1st August to Sunday 3rd August.
Not that there was much left over after all expenses were paid but last year’s festival committee was able to support two special projects in the town.
When it became known that there was a strong possibility that we would not have Christmas Lighting in Lanesboro the Gathering committee quickly rallied to ensure that the Christmas Lights would brighten Lanesboro during last Christmas and helped finance the Christmas Lighting.
Secondly, the committee also made a donation to St. Mary’s Parish Church to support the wonderful work that has been done by Fr. Reilly in our parish church.
This would not have been possible without your marvellous support and we again urge your support in helping to make this year another special year with our festival in Lanesboro.
There is a huge outlay this year and with little to no financial support available, as was the case last year, we are encouraging anyone that can offer sponsorship to help us create another fabulous weekend in Lanesboro. Kayaking Summer Camp
One of the best and most exciting summer camps held in the area will take place in Lanesboro from Monday 21st July to Friday 25th July. Yes! I am referring to the Kayaking summer camp that will cater for young people between the ages of 10 and 16. The sessions will take place each morning from 10am to 1pm. The best €65 that will ever be spent will be spent at this summer camp where young people will learn to master the skill of kayaking and open the waterways and the sport of Kayaking to the limited number that can be taken for the week. It is advisable that you make contact very early to ensure your place on this camp. Course fees must be paid in full at the start of the course. There will be Irish Canoe Union certification for successful students. There will also be refresher courses for those that have already obtained Level1 and level 2 certification.

Rathcline Lotto results
Saturday night last 5th July saw the following numbers being drawn in the Rathcline GAA lottery 10, 18, 23, 26, 42 and 45 for a jackpot of €900. There was nobody with four of the six numbers although one ticket holder was only one number away from the jackpot prize. The jackpot will now rise to €1,000 on Saturday night next 12th July. The four winners of €25 each were Brendan Ward, longford Road, Patsy Cox, Ernagh, Paula Kenny and Mike and Nancy Casserley, Clonfower.
Annual Pilgrimage to Lough Derg
The annual day pilgrimage to Lough Derg will take place on Sunday 24th August leaving Lanesboro at 7am. The bus will travel via Scramogue, Rooskey and Carrick on Shannon. As the bus booked is from Farrelly’s and will leave Kenagh at 6.40am and will also pick up at Derryhaun at 6.50am.

Wedding
The marriage took place in St. Mary’s Church on Saturday 7th June of Amy Gill, daughter of Albert and Mairead Gill, Rathcline Road and James Kelly, son of Nora and the late Des Kelly, Knockcroghery. Chief bridesmaid was Aoibheánn Gill, sister of the bride. Bestman was Desmond Ó Ceallaigh, brother of the groom. Flower girls were Grace Brown, Nia Walsh, Florence Leydon and Madeleine Fitzgerald, all nieces of the groom. The marriage was celebrated by Fr. Michael Reilly assisted by Fr. Michael Gill, uncle of the bride. The wedding reception took place at Lough Rynn Castle, Mohill.
We wish the happy couple many years of wedded bliss.
Proud Grandparents
On Saturday week past in St Dominic’s Hall in Kenagh, a team of U10’s from Maynooth, Kildare were victorious in the Leinster Final of the Community Games 5-aside soccer, beating a team from Ashbourne, Co. Meath in the final by a score of 3-2, having comeback from 2 goals. Amongst the team was star defender Ryan Gillen, son of Barbara and Peter Gillen, grandson of Greg and Bernie Gillen from the Green (Fiona’s godson!). They now move onto the All-Ireland semis in Athlone at the end of August where they will represent all of Leinster. We wish them continued success, and as they say in Maynooth “Crom Abu”.
New Courses at Lanesboro Community College
This coming September Lanesboro Community College will embark on two new year long full time courses. These will be PLC courses in Outdoor Recreation and a PLC course in Music both FETAC level 5.
The Outdoor Pursuit course will include outdoor recreation, outdoor leadership and safety, adventure activities, hillwalking proficiency, teamworking, work experience and communication. As you can see it is a wide and varied course and it is a course full of potential. Following the successful completion of this course there is the opportunity to go on to a 3rd level degree course at GMIT Castlebar and Shackleton College, Dublin.
The second course is a PLC course in Music. This course includes modules in music performance, musicianship, music theory and practice, music industry studies, graphic design, communications and work experience. This course covers all aspects of music and following a successful completion of the course there is the great opportunity to progress to a wide variety of colleges to complete your music degree: A.I.T., W.I.T., Tralee and Dundalk I.T. and Limerick I.T. There are career opportunities in music performance, production and promotion.

Dance and Fitness Summer Camp
Feel Fit Donna Marie Summer Camp will take place in The Co-Op hall from 21st July. The camp is for the ages 4 to 12 years and is a dance, fitness and creativity camp with a display of dance on the last dance. The cost is €50 per child and there are family rates available. World Cup Final Tickets
Now that the World Cup is in full swing the Rathcline club scratch tickets coinciding with the World Cup final are selling very well. The tickets cost just €2 and the winner can win a prize of €500. Just buy your scratch card for €2, scratch off the relevant segment and see what time you have been allocated for the scoring of the first goal in the final.
You will be hoping that the goal is scored at your time to claim the €500 prize. It is great fun and only costs €2. Your support is greatly encouraged.
Wedding
The marriage took place in St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro, of Jenny Donlon, daughter of Peter and Geraldine Donlon, Lisreevagh and Niall Smyth, son of Eileen and the late Ollie Smyth, Mullingar. Chief bridesmaid was Noleen Donlon sister of the bridesmaids were Patricia and Kate Donlon sisters of the bride. Bestman was Diarmuid Smyth brother of the groom and groomsmen were Barry Kelly and Shane O’Gorman both friends of the groom. The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Michael Reilly, Lanesboro. The wedding reception was held in the landmark Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon.

Youth Service Summer Camp
The County Longford Youth Service Summer camp 2014 will take place in Lanesboro from Monday 14th to Friday 18th July daily from 2pm to 5pm. The camp will comprise of fun, games and sport and will cost €15 for the week’s activities. The summer camp is for young people between 10 and 18 years. Rathcline Ladies
Mid-week will be a busy time for the Rathcline ladies as the seniors will play Colmcille in the first round of the championship on Wednesday evening in Clonbonny at 8pm. On Thursday the U14’s will play Carrickedmond in their semi-final again in Clonbonny at 7pm. We hope that there will be a big crowd turning up to cheer on the ladies as they strive for county success.
Well done to the Longford ladies on their great extra time victory over Wicklow at the weekend. They will now take on Offaly in the final.
Massive Triathlon Weekend
Another busy week gone by for the club with the “The Midland Inter Club Aquathon Series” which was a great success once again. The last race of the series took place last Wednesday night at Coosan Point with Lanesboro lady Marie Sudway taking the prize for first female over the line. Marie has had a great year to date and added to her success this year by being the leading lady of the complete series. We must not forget our other members who left also like winners after completing their first full Aquathon and also those who completed their first competitive 750m swim. Well done to all. Some members took part in Tri-Athlone on Saturday last, well done to all especially those doing their first triathlon some great times achieved as always.
The countdown is now on with less than a week to go to the Two Provinces Sprint Triathlon and the Two Provinces Kidathon. The anticipation and excitement is now reaching fever pitch as yet another spectacular and phenomenal race awaits us on Saturday next 12th July.
The town will be a hive of activity from Wednesday on as we prepare to welcome over 600 competitors in the adult race and over 120 competitors in the kids race. This is a very special and proud day for Lanesboro Triathlon Club and for the communities of Lanesboro and Ballyleague as both communities come together to put on one of the best races on the Triathlon calendar. This race is rated as one of the best in Ireland in the Triathlon field. The positive feedback received from visiting competitors about the race and also about the hospitality of the locals goes from strength to strength every year and is something we should be proud of. It takes a lot of hard work to put on such a spectacular race and Lanesboro Triathlon club could not do this without the help of the local people, businesses and organisations/clubs who give up so much of their time to assist in the preparation for the race and also who marshal on the day. For this the club is very grateful for your time and co-operation. Without you this race would not be a success.
Please remember there will be traffic disruption between 7.00 am and 2.00pm due to the race. The Ballyleague to Scramogue road will be closed between 10.45 and 2.00pm, there will be some disruption on the Rathcline Road between 11 am and 2pm and between O’Brien’s corner and the Anchor Hotel due to the run part of the race. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused by this and would ask that you co-operate with marshals on the day. Marshals are there to ensure the safety of both competitors and spectators on such a fantastic day for Lanesboro and Ballyleague a day we should all be proud of.
We invite you to come and cheer on the athletes and be part of the day. We have over 30 members from Lanesboro Triathlon club taking part in the adult race. A very special mention goes to our 20 junior members who are taking part in the kidathon. The kidathon is spectacular to watch as these young athletes display their talents in a fearless fashion. The excitement in the Junior club has been building for some weeks now and they have been training very hard under the direction of some of our veteran Tri-athletes Niall O’Donoghue, Sean Mimnagh and Ronnie Johnston. For a lot of these junior members it is their first year competing so please come out and cheer them on as they represent our town and the future of Lanesboro Triathlon Club. We also have TV3 celeb Pete the Vet (Photo below) once again returning to Lanesboro to compete in one of his favourite races.
Finally we hope and pray for good weather on the day and wish Anthony Gillen race director for 2014 and his experienced race management team best of luck for a safe and successful race. We invite all marshals, competitors and locals to join in the after party in The Lifebelt Bar on Saturday night next where food and entertainment will be provided. A draw will take place on the night for all marshals who help out on the day with a prize of €200 up for grabs. This promises to be a great night of celebration so don’t miss it!!!
Cul Camps
The Cul Camps at the Rathcline club will take place at the club grounds in Clonbonny commencing on Monday 28th July to Friday 1st August. Numbers are always huge at this camp and we expect that this year will exceed last year’s numbers in a big way. Ballyleague Village Renewal
€60,000 deficit in Ballyleague River bank project. Contractors are due on site this week to start work.
After a four year campaign to re-develop a river bank and replace a dangerous quay wall the people of Ballyleague are preparing for the arrival of the building contractors – and looking forward to a €300,000 project going ahead in the next few weeks.
The contract for Phase 1 of the development has been won by Damien Gibbons, Civil Engineering and Building Contractors from Westport in county Mayo – who signed the tender documents this week – and will be on site to commence the pile driving for the new river bank and supporting wall within a very short time but questions still stand over a deficit in support funding to conclude the job and Phase 2.
The contractor is expected to be on site for twenty weeks or so and to facilitate the work the river bank walk – south of the bridge in Ballyleague, Lanesborough will be closed for long periods in July, August and September.
Funding for this project has come from Failte Ireland, Roscommon county council, Waterways Ireland and the local community but there are some concerns that up to €60,000 more may now be needed to get this and phase 2 complete at the site.
After last year’s very successful flag day bucket collection throughout the community of Lanesborough and Ballyleague, the Village Renewal group lodged nearly €2000 in the Lanesboro Ballyleague Credit Union for our river bank development.
Thankfully the contract for the project is now awarded but the local community is still raising funds to complete phase 2 of the project and on next Saturday July 12th they are once again staging an annual bucket collection and ticket draw around the town at various locations – to co-inside with the staging of the very popular Tri Lanesborough Two Provinces Triathlon in the area.
A special feature of the fundraising this year will be a draw for a fantastic 500 Euro voucher for Kevin Martin’s KM Cycle shop in Longford. Tickets are going on sale this week – priced at 2 Euro each and three tickets for €5. Tickets will be available on the streets on the day and in all local shops – including Daybreak, Ballyleague this week. This is the only fundraising event Ballyleague Village Renewal & Tidy towns committee stages on the streets every year. It is fully covered by a Garda permit and the volunteers will be asking you to be as generously as you can.
Ballyleague Village Renewal & Tidy Towns have to raise €35,000 for the river bank development so all public support is very much appreciated. The ESB owns the fishery at Ballyleague and have once again been asked to help out. The Inland Fisheries have also accepted an application for funding. Local anglers are hoping these groups will not be found wanting when it comes to helping to fund the completion of these very important angling facilities.

Rathcline GAA
Well done to the lads on their win over Ballymore in Division 2 on Friday night in Clonbonny. The game finished with a scoreline of 4-13 to 2-13. After conceding two early goals it didn’t take Rathcline long to get back into the game and throughout the second half the team showed their fitness and resilience to win the game. Next up for the lads in Division 2 is Grattans in Stonepark this Friday 11th July at 8pm. Let’s hope for back to back wins which will give us confidence and momentum going into our Intermediate Championship game against Legan the following weekend.
With only one week to go until the World Cup final we would like to thank everyone who has bought and sold our scratch cards and we would urge everyone to make one final push to ensure all tickets are sold. You are in with a chance of winning €500 if you have the ticket that has the exact time of the first goal in the World Cup final on Sunday July 13th. Scratch cards only cost €2. We would urge the parish to get behind this fundraiser as money raised will go towards the loan on the pitch.
The Rathcline GAA Race day will take place at the Galway Races on Monday 28th July. The club hopes to replicate the success of last year’s event. The occasion will present our parishioners, members, supporters and friends a fantastic afternoon of horse racing on opening day of the 2014 festival. The club has agreed an attractive hospitality package with the organisers in Ballybrit which surpasses that seen at the Annual Punchestown County Board Fundraiser. Most people will be familiar with the Galway Races but for those who are not; a great day out is always guaranteed. Ballybrit at the end of July is always the highlight of the horse racing calendar in Ireland and it is the aim of Rathcline GAA to tap into the atmosphere, banter and craic again to serve our own needs as well as giving something back to our supporters. Minor Club
Round 3 of the Minor League Division 1 takes place tomorrow evening Monday 7th July at 7.45pm as Western Gaels face Killoe Óg in Dunbeggan.
Our U12s have a challenge match this Friday night 11th July in Drumshambo.
A reminder to all that it is the final week for the €2 World Cup scratch cards. We urge everyone to support the draw to make it successful.
Over the last couple of weeks we have looked for help from parents and disappointedly very few have helped out. We would urge parents to come on board for the last couple of months and help the club out. Remember it’s your club and your children’s club and as a voluntary organisation we need as much help as possible.

Our senior ladies face Colmcille in the first round of the Senior Championship on this Wednesday evening 9th July at 8pm in Clonbonny. It would be great to see a large crowd out supporting the girls. Best of luck girls.
