Cemetery Sunday moves on to Clonbonny Cemetery
Next Sunday 20th July, the final Blessing of the graves and Mass will take place in Clonbonny cemetery at 6pm. It is very important that families with family graves in the graveyard ensure that their family graves are well tended to.
G2 Festival on August Weekend
Following the outstanding success of last year’s Gathering the committee have put together another exciting festival that will take place in Lanesboro on August Bank Holiday weekend. The committee has drawn a great line up of talent for your enjoyment throughout the weekend. It will be an action packed weekend and one that should not be missed.
Friday 1st August:
7.30 to 9.15pm Kiddies Disco DJ Stephen Donohoe.
9.30pm to 11.00pm dancing to country sounds with Shannonside’s Mike Darcy.
11pm to 1am the magnificent music of Brendan Shine and his Band.
Saturday 2nd August:
5pm Tour of Lanesboro Power Station with Mervyn Johnston.
10pm to 11.30pm dancing to the country disco sounds of Shannonside’s Mike Darcy.
11.30 to 1.30am. Dancing the night away to Irish country music’s rising star Johnny Brady. His performance at the Midsummers Day with the Stars at Roscommon Racecourse the other week was really fantastic and we are looking forward to a repeat performance on Saturday night.
Sunday 3rd August:
11.30am G2 Gathering Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro
1pm. A very special Guided Walk in the Woods “What is edible in the Woods” with Brendan Farrell, Ardagh. This is a free walk and with a limited number of places available early booking is necessary.
3pm to 6pm Céilí in the marquee with Johnny Duffy and Rising Dust
3pm to 6pm Family Day and Picnic with a host of family fun and water specials including raft to race.
9.30 to 11pm our own local and very popular group Storyhorse
11pm to 1am Music by Whitewater. They are a Mayo based Rock band who have built up a huge following throughout the country. Their debut album was released in 2009 with rave reviews. Whitewater are a force to be reckoned with on the live scene with a jammed packed setlist , top class sound and lighting this is a must see show.
Tickets for Brendan Shine on Friday night and Johnny Brady on Saturday night are on sale in O’Brien’s. Bookings for the ‘tour of the power station’ on Saturday and ‘walk in the woods’ must be made in O’Brien’s. Please book early to avoid disappointment.
Junior’s Kayaking Summer Camp
One of the best and most exciting summer camps held in the area will again take place in Lanesboro from Monday 21st July to Friday 25th July. Junior Hannon will be holding the Kayaking summer camp that will cater for young people between the ages of 10 and 16. The sessions will take place each morning from 10am to 1pm. The best €65 that will ever be spent will be spent at this summer camp where young people will learn to master the skill of kayaking and open the waterways and the sport of Kayaking to the limited number that can be taken for the week. It is advisable that you make contact very early to ensure your place on this camp. Course fees must be paid in full at the start of the course. There will be Irish Canoe Union certification for successful students. There will also be refresher courses for those that have already obtained Level1 and level 2 certification.

Strictly Come Dancing
The Rathcline and St. Faithleach’s clubs have come together to host what will be a very special and unique evening out when they will host ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ next November. Both clubs are actively seeking dancers for the event and you are asked to be positive in your response if you are approached.
Strictly Come Dancing has been a big hit everywhere it has been held and I am sure that it will be no different when both clubs come to stage it in November. The merging of the clubs for this event is a huge bonus as it allows the talented from both sides of the bridge to come together and produced a night never to be missed or forgotten.
Don’t worry about your dancing skills as the entire event will be co-ordinated and choreographed by the Midlands Drama School over an eight week period.
Don’t wait to be asked to come on board as one of the dancers just give your name to Lorraine 0876827966 or Helen 0860809377 and these ladies will take you through what will be required. Come along and be part of a wonderful night as well as get trained to dance over an eight week period.
Championship Time
On Sunday next in Ballymahon the Rathcline Intermediate team will make the first step towards the county championship when they take on Legan in what should be an enthralling game. Both teams met in the championship last year and Legan emerged victorious and I am sure that Rathcline will be doing everything in their power to reverse the result of last year. We hope that there will be a great representation from the parish travelling to Ballymahon to cheer Rathcline to victory. The match is timed for a 6pm throw in.

Lanesboro Tidy Towns would like to thank everyone that supported their draw in conjunction with the Lanesboro Triathlon club’s ‘Twin Provinces’ sprint triathlon on Saturday last. The proceeds will be of great assistance to the flower planting throughout the town by the Tidy Towns committee.
There was one outright winner who guessed the correct time for the triathlon was Oliver Shanley from Longford tri club. The winning time of Aaron O’Brien’s was 58min 06 sec. Aaron proudly represented Limerick Triathlon club.

Huge Triathlon Success

On Saturday last, a large field of 525 individual triathletes and 15 relay teams descended on Lanesboro to compete in the Two Provinces Triathlon which was hosted by the Lanesboro Triathlon Club. The triathlon race is part of Triathlon Ireland National Series calendar of events and many of the country’s best triathletes were in town for the occasion. Not to be out done, just over 125 children from ages 8 to 15 arrived from all counties in Ireland to participate in the Two Provinces Kidathon to establish it as a national kids’ event not to be missed.

In the weeks leading up to Saturday a local community effort saw both Lanesboro and Ballyleague being presented in pristine condition, while on race day the MC team created a wonderful and informative atmosphere.
Although not as clear and sunny as last year’s event, the conditions were very good at 18C with a mild breeze and intermittent drizzle. Water temperature was 19.2C.
The Kidathon was kicked off by its race director Brid O’Reilly at 9am in two waves, with older 12-15 year olds leading the way followed by 8-11 year olds. It was a wonderful sight to see so many enthusiastic kids line up and set off in a determined fashion and give a great gutsy performance in completing their event.

The triathlon was started by its race director Anthony Gillen at 11am in front of a large crowd. The race comprised of two waves for men followed by a third wave for women. The swimmers made their way around the 750m course with Aaron O’Brien from Limerick Triathlon club leading the pack exiting the water after 9 minutes 15 seconds. From there the competitors embarked on the cycle that took the riders to Scramogue and back again to the transition area.

Following the exertions of the 20km cycle, the competitors took to running the 5k run that took them up to Harold’s Crossroad and back down through the Main Street to the finish at the car park. Aaron O’Brien held his lead and came home first, covering the course in 58 minutes and 6 seconds – just 31 seconds ahead of Tomasz Gagola from Dublin. The first local home was Sean Farrell in a time of 1.07.24 followed by Mark Kenny in 01:08:26 and then Fiachra Sudway in 01:09:46. Fiachra’s mother Marie was 5th lady home overall and won her age group category, while Colm Daly was also a category winner beating off an international field with a tremendous performance. Many competitors reported personal bests and great crowd encouragement, which is sure to reinforce the popularity of the course for future events. Others commented on this being their first attempt at a triathlon and were most grateful for the individual support provided by kayaking and water safety team as they navigated the waters. It was great to see many Lanesboro Triathlon Club members successfully take on the course and we congratulate them all especially those who competed in their first ever triathlon following months of training and preparation.
The Lanesboro Triathlon Club expresses its thanks to the 175 locals who gave up their time to ensure that the event was safely marshalled, as without the support of marshals this event could never take place. Additionally, the club would like to thank the members of the Lanesboro and Ballyleague communities, the club and race sponsors, local clubs and businesses for their support leading up to and during the event. The marshal prize was won by Joe McGrath.
We look forward to next year’s event which we hope will attract many of the competitors back to the scenic Lakeland shores and the warm Two Provinces welcome.

Vigil at Monument
Members of the socialist republican group Éirígí held a vigil at the monument commerating the death of hunger striker Martin Hurson on Sunday last. Sunday last was the 31st anniversary of Martin Hurson’s death after 46 days of his hunger strike in 1981. Below is a picture of some of the attendees at the vigil on Sunday afternoon.
Annual Pilgrimage to Lough Derg
The annual day pilgrimage to Lough Derg will take place on Sunday 24th August leaving Lanesboro at 7am. The bus will travel via Scramogue, Rooskey and Carrick on Shannon. As the bus booked is from Farrelly’s and will leave Kenagh at 6.40am and will also pick up at Derryhaun at 6.50am.

Rathcline Lotto results
Saturday night last 19th July saw the following numbers being drawn in the Rathcline GAA lottery 5, 19, 28, 29, 39 and 43 for a jackpot of €1,000. There was nobody with four of the six numbers although there were three ticket holders only one number away from the jackpot prize. The jackpot will now rise to €1,100 on Saturday night next 26th July. The four winners of €25 each were Amy and Danny O’Sullivan, Gurteengar, John Killian, Knock, Mike Greene, The Green and Tom Mulvihill, Cullentra.
Lough Ree AC
Last weekend was a busy one, between the triathlon in Lanesboro and the second day of the National Athletic Championships in Tullamore. It involved the over twelve and upward groups. The club had two who had qualified from the Connaught championship – Róisín Brennan (Turbo Javelin U12) and Alannah Flood (High Jump U14). The pair had mixed fortune. The Brennan’s were led to believe that Róisín’s event started as early as 11am. They missed it! It started at 10am. It must have been sickening for them to travel so far for nothing particularly as Róisín is so competitive. Alannah’s event was later in the day. Having started the High Jump just recently it was her first time competing at this level. After a shaky start, she had a personal best – jumping higher than she ever did before. One cannot ask for better than that Well Done! to the Cashel kid.
New Courses at Lanesboro Community College
This coming September Lanesboro Community College will embark on two new year long full time courses. These will be PLC courses in Outdoor Recreation and a PLC course in Music both FETAC level 5.
The Outdoor Pursuit course will include outdoor recreation, outdoor leadership and safety, adventure activities, hillwalking proficiency, teamworking, work experience and communication. As you can see it is a wide and varied course and it is a course full of potential. Following the successful completion of this course there is the opportunity to go on to a 3rd level degree course at GMIT Castlebar and Shackleton College, Dublin.
The second course is a PLC course in Music. This course includes modules in music performance, musicianship, music theory and practice, music industry studies, graphic design, communications and work experience. This course covers all aspects of music and following a successful completion of the course there is the great opportunity to progress to a wide variety of colleges to complete your music degree: A.I.T., W.I.T., Tralee and Dundalk I.T. and Limerick I.T. There are career opportunities in music performance, production and promotion.
The courses will commence in September and early booking is advisable as places will be limited. Dance and Fitness Summer Camp
Feel Fit Donna Marie Summer Camp will take place in The Co-Op hall from Monday next 21st July. The camp is for the ages 4 to 12 years and is a dance, fitness and creativity camp with a display of dance on the last dance. The cost is €50 per child and there are family rates available. Ballyleague Development
Congratulations to the winner of our tidy towns development draw last weekend Mr John R. Smith. John wins a voucher for €500 from Kevin Martin’s Bike shop, Longford. Well done Mary Greally for selling the winning ticket!!! Thanks to everybody who supported the draw. Our community group has now raised €20,000 for the new river bank and quay wall development at Ballyleague – and the good news is that construction work is now underway on the project. It is terrific to see the new quay wall going in – after 4 years of hard work by our committee. This work i- costing €300,000 is being done by Gibbons Civil Engineering and Construction from Westport and will be completed within 20 weeks. There will be considerable disruption to the riverside walk during that period and pedestrians are asked to be patient. Ballyleague Village Renewal is now working ahead on plans to replace the existing white seating with new seating and stone work in the area. Each of the 5 seats will be given a special name – in association with a sponsorship. Strictly Come Dancing – Fundraising Event: On November 22nd St Faithleachs will join forces with our near neighbours Rathcline, in an event the like of not seen before in the locality. The two clubs will come together in producing a “Strictly Come Dancing” event, coordinated and choreographed by the Midlands Drama School. Members from both clubs are presently working together to organise this event, which is sure to be a night not to be missed. Both clubs have sent forward members to form an organising committee. This committee is now looking for parties interested in taking part in the event. All couples will go through an 8 week period of training and coaching from the Midlands Drama School. Rathcline GAA
Well done to our senior men on a hard fought victory against Grattans on Friday evening. Grattans were well organised defensively and Rathcline were finding it difficult to score in the 1st half. At half time we were losing to Grattans. In the 2nd half however Rathcline’s persistence paid off with an excellent display of football and point taking. The defence stayed strong while our midfield had more of the ball, the forwards took scores whenever presented with chances and slowly the game turned in Rathcline’s favour. A very good game in terms of our championship game this weekend, and I’m sure Grattans will prove difficult opponents to whomever they play in the championship.
The 2014 intermediate championship gets under way when Rathcline play Legan in the 1st round this Sunday in Ballymahon. Throw in is at 6pm, the team come into the championship with a healthy set of wins under their belts and confidence on the up. Any person who supports Rathcline always looks forward to the championship and this year is no different. The lads have trained hard and it’s a game everyone in the club is looking forward to. Your support would be greatly appreciated this Sunday in Ballymahon for the 6pm throw in. We wish the management and team the very best of luck!
Thanks to all the people who bought and sold tickets for the world cup draw. Everyone that bought a ticket will have a specific time for when the first goal is scored. A winner will be announced during the week. The €2 scratch cards have been a big hit with local people and the money will go towards paying the loan for the pitch. Thanks again to everyone who supported this fund raiser.

Rathcline Ladies
Hard luck to our senior ladies who suffered a defeat by Ballymore in the 2nd round of the senior championship. The ladies were beaten by 7 pts in the end, but with some players missing put in a brave performance. There are two games left; the ladies play Clonguish and Killoe in the next few weeks. Please support our Rathcline ladies who have put in huge effort and commitment throughout the year.
Our U 14’s girls beat Carrickedmond in the semi-final of the championship. The final is on Thursday, when the girls take on Clonguish. Please check fixture details in the paper for time and venue. These are the stars of the future and we wish Steve, Madeline and the team the very best of luck!
Rathcline Minor Club
The minors had a fantastic win over Killoe last Monday evening. The lads beat a strongly fancied Killoe team by 5 pts. They have been training hard and a result like that shows that it’s all worth it.
The U 16 team take to the pitch against Cashel on Wednesday night in the special league. This is a local derby match and all players are asked to make themselves available. The U 14’s had a good win over Faithleachs in a challenge match and the U 12 team beat Drumshambo in a challenge last week. All these games are leading up to the championship games in Longford soon.
The minor club would urge parents to make sure that players are at matches. We as a club are down in numbers from other years and it’s vitally important that player’s turn up for training and matches. Missing players are taking away from themselves and their team mates; it just has a huge adverse effect on team morale. So again we want to ask parents to be proactive in getting their sons out to training and matches, thanks.
Congrats to Mark Lyons and Iarlaith Sullivan who made the county U 16 squad. We wish them the best of luck in the Shield final.
