All Ireland Silver Medal

Lanesboro and the parish of Rathcline are rightly proud of one of our young inhabitants for his marvellous achievement in the U12 Community Games Final in Athlone. Duileach Ryan, son of Seadna and Teresa Ryan, Main Street, came second and claimed a silver medal in the final of the U12 Backstroke. Duileach is a very talented all rounder sportsman and his dedication to sport was duly rewarded with this silver medal. He is a very warm, mannerly and friendly youngster and may his demeanor never change. He is a pupil of Lanesborough Primary School who I am sure will give him a warm welcome back on Thursday when the school reopens

Costello’s Say Thank You

Costello’s Nursing Home ran into a serious problem when the water pump house in Ballyleague stopped working and they were left with no water. They asked and received from Gerard Farrell a tanker full of water to help them maintain their service of care towards their inhabitants. They would like to public acknowledge the prompt response from Gerard Farrell that took them out of a very precarious position.

If the tanker did not become available, the Nursing Home would have too close, until water was restored, due to the lack of waters for all the necessities that goes with the running of a Nursing Home.

Boat Building Braining Course to Start

This area has always had a proud tradition of boat building. Our community links with angling on Lough Ree and the Shannon led to the formation of a boat building training course in the Bord na Mona billets in Cloontuskert in the 1970s when dozens of new wooden boats were built there and next month a new training course helping people to build new lake boats, and perhaps attain a job with these skills, will commence in the Ballyleague-Lanesborough area. A top class boat building tutor with over 50 years of experience has agreed to lead the event over 20 weeks – during which four new 18 foot lake boats will be built as part of a project supported by the Department of Social Protection and Roscommon Integrated Development Company. A group of trainees is being finalised and we are now inviting additional participants for the boat building training. These participants must be in receipt of a qualifying social welfare payment or must be dependents of social welfare recipients and/or their families. If you are in receipt of one of the following DSP payments (or dependent on someone who is) you are eligible to take part in the training – that will not affect your payments in any way: Job Seeker’s Allowance / Job Seeker’s Benefit, One Parent Family Payment, Illness Benefit (Long term)/Disability Allowance, Invalidity Pension, Blind Persons’ Pension, Carers Allowance, Back to Work Allowance, Back to Education Allowance

State Pension

If you are presently on a FAS CE scheme you may also take part in the training – if you have the consent of your supervisor and/or the sponsoring committee. To declare an interest in taking part in the boat building training simply write down your full name, address, mobile number and your PPS number on a sheet of paper, drop it into an envelope marked BOAT BUILDING and leave the envelope into Joe Cribbin at Daybreak shop in Ballyleague or Joe O’Brien’s Corner Shop in Lanesborough before Monday September 8th. The training course will take place during both daytime hours and in the evenings and will also include some additional trainees who are working full time but wish to help out with the training and learn some of the skills so send in your details if you are interested. The number of places on the boat building training course will be limited so please send in details as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Rathcline Ladies

The minor ladies had a wonderful victory over Killoe in Clonbonny on Sunday last and they now travel to meet Mullinalaghta in the next round at 11.30am on Sunday morning next. The mentors of Steve Peters, Dan Magan, Caoimhe Murray, Paula Kenny and Madaleine Murray are doing great work with the girls.

The clothes collection for the Ladies club has renewed and if you have old clothes to donate please contact Mike Greene or Madaleine Murray and they will arrange collection or drop off.

Barry Raftery Conference this Friday

Professor Barry Raftery died in August 2010 leaving an amazing legacy following a distinguished career. Nothing sums his life up better than an appreciation written by Gabriel Cooney in a quarterly review of world archaeology, Antiquity.

The future of the Mid-Shannon Peatlands, Amenity, Archaeology and Bio Diversity is the topic of the conference and it should draw a huge interest due to its range and tremendous and immediate interest to our area. The conference will take place at Corlea Interpretive Centre on Friday next 29th August. Admission is only €10 which includes tea/ coffee am and pm and also lunch. Registration will take place at 10am.

At 10.20am Dr. John Feehan will open the conference with a lecture on ‘The Past of Midsummer Peatlands. 11.10am Dr. Ronan O’Flaherty will speak on the Guardians of Midhir – Cranes in our past and future. At 11.40 local archaeologist, Brian O’Hara will speak on Experimental and Community Archaeology. The morning session will close with a talk from Eoin Donnelly, a forester and woodright who is in the process of building a replica Viking house.

The afternoon session will commence Longford County Senior Planning officer Donal Mac an Bheatha on the Future of the Mid Shannon Peatlands. Wetlands Heritage chairman Kieran Mc Entee and Tom Egan, Land project Manager from Bord na Mona will speak on the Shared Vision of the two groups. The conference will finish with a Walk in the Bog with David Fallon, Ecologist with Bord na Mona who will talk and present Biodiversity on the Walk.

Barry Raftery’s input into the development at Corlea was remarkable and it is only fitting that his name should be honoured at this memorial conference. The excellent Wetlands Heritage committee have worked so hard in the development of this programme and it is one that should not be missed. The calibre of the contributors goes without saying and there is a lasting education to be garnished from the conference.

Strictly Come Dancing

The Rathcline and St. Faithleach’s clubs have come together to host what will be a very special and unique evening out when they will host ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ next November. Both clubs are actively seeking dancers for the event and you are asked to be positive in your response if you are approached.

Strictly Come Dancing has been a big hit everywhere it has been held and I am sure that it will be no different when both clubs come to stage it in November. The merging of the clubs for this event is a huge bonus as it allows the talented from both sides of the bridge to come together and produced a night never to be missed or forgotten.

Don’t worry about your dancing skills as the entire event will be co-ordinated and choreographed by the Midlands Drama School over an eight week period.

Don’t wait to be asked to come on board as one of the dancers just give your name to Lorraine 0876827966 or Helen 0860809377 and these ladies will take you through what will be required. Come along and be part of a wonderful night as well as get trained to dance over an eight week period.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club

On Tuesday evening last in front of a surprisingly large crowd our minor squad played Carrick Sarsfields in the semi final of the Minor B championship and the extra bonus was the winner was receiving a place in the quarter final of the A championship.

Following a pretty nervy first half where our lads were made fight hard for all scores and opportunities they still managed to keep their head in front as the half time whistle blew.

The second half was a much better performance where they opened the Carrick Sarsfields defence on a number of occasions, but did not always finish as they should. They were in control throughout the second half and now finished the game comfortable winners.

Their performance would tell you that there was more in the tank and it is now up to the team management to get the players ready for their next big challenge which is on Thursday night when they will take on Emmet Óg in Killoe at 7.30pm.

Our U14 team claimed their place in the championship semi-final where they will meet Colmcille for a place in the final.

If you are interested in supporting either of the above teams or indeed any of the other teams in the clubs by means of sponsorship the club would be delighted to hear from you. With two of our sides at semi final and final stages it would be wonderful to have them all kitted out in the same colours for their big days.

The club would like to thank Killoe for travelling to Clonbonny last week for a challenge game.

Our U12 team will travel to Colmcille this coming Thursday for a league game against Colmcille. The game has a 7pm throw in time.

Our U16 team were defeated in the championship but all is not lost as they will now take part in the Shield semi final in the coming weeks.

U10 and U12 panels continue to train on Friday evenings and parents are encouraged to continue to have their young players in Clonbonny. There is great credit due to parents for making the effort to have their young players in Clonbonny and indeed for all their encouragement.

Rathcline GAA

Our Intermediate team played Connolly’s in Ardagh on Sunday afternoon. Rathcline were under pressure straight away with quick diagonal ball into their forwards and Connolly’s were causing problems all over the pitch. There was some decent play down each flank by our players with Kevin Sorohan delivering decent ball into our forward line from the left. Rathcline were just about keeping tabs with Connolly’s from a point’s perspective but goals change and win games. With ten minutes to play in the first half Connolly’s found the net, it was a hammer blow; they also tacked on another couple of points, which meant the scoreline read 1-7 to 3 points at half time. We had a mountain to climb against a well organised team. To be fair our players put in a more determined effort in the second half and gradually really started to put Connolly’s under pressure, good fielding at midfield and forwards taking their chances saw Rathcline score 7 points in the second half, but it wasn’t enough and Connolly’s themselves scored a couple of points late on. Rathcline had two differing halves and just couldn’t claw the deficit back against a good team. Final score was Connolly’s 1-11 Rathcline 10 points.

Our next fixture is next weekend; it’s a play off to see who gets into the semi final of the Intermediate championship. We play our neighbours and rivals Killashee. It’s the last chance for both teams and it promises to be an exciting game. Thanks for your support at the Connolly’s game and get behind the team for this next fixture. Please check the fixture list for more details or our Facebook/website sites.

The club have two tickets for the All Ireland Hurling Final which takes place at Croke Park. What a game it will be with old foes Kilkenny taking on a resurgent Tipperary team. Cards are in all businesses and shops around the town, its €2 a line and someone will win the tickets, so please support if you can!

There was no winner of this week’s lotto draw. The winning numbers were 3, 9, 18, 28, 32 and 43. Next week’s jackpot is €1700. The €25 winners were Frank Conmy Rathcline Road, Declan Connor Ballyleague, Sean Kenny Fermoyle and Mary Nally, Nally’s Pub.

Rathcline Ladies

Congratulations to our Minor team who had an impressive 10 points win over Killoe on Sunday afternoon in Clonbonny. This margin doesn’t quite tell the full story with the Rathcline ladies losing by 5 points at half time, but knowing these players, defeat is not an option. A strong team on paper who know each other very well, this could be a season of promise for the Rathcline Minor ladies. With a strong management set up of Steve Peters, Paula Kenny, Caoimhe Murray, Dan McGann and Madeline Murray, all the parts are there and we wish the team the best of luck when they take on Mullinalaghta in the next round on Sunday. The game is in Mullinalaghta so please check fixture list for time.

Rathcline Minor Club

Well done to our Minor team who reached the Minor B final. They meet Colmcille in the final and this promises to be a great game of football. Please keep an eye on fixture list for the date and time.

Congratulations to our U 14 team who progressed to a championship semi final against Colmcille. A big thanks to the Killoe U 14 team who travelled to Clonbonny for a challenge match during the week.

The U 16’s were beaten by Clonguish and now go into the Shield semi final.

The U 12’s play Colmcille, again please check fixture list for time and venue.

The U 10’s and U 8’s are still training on a Friday evening, again a big thanks to all the parents that bring their kids out and to the coaches, well done to all.

The minor club are looking for some sponsorship for tops for the Minor team and the U 14 team. Both groups have done their parish proud so far. If you are interested then please contact Sean Kenny or Seadna Ryan.

Finally a happy birthday to Daithi Mulvihill, he turned the big 21 over the weekend, and Cullentra was the place to be Saturday night.
