Death

Sunday 24th was a very sad day in the life of Ballyleague and neighbouring parishes as the much thought of Fergus Hanley passed away at his residence after an illness borne with a great dignity and spirit. He was a far sighted man who seen many opportunities in business and was willing to invest money; his foresight was well rewarded. Fergus was a great man for the parish, the area and the community. He had an affable personality and always had a warm and friendly word for everyone and his popularity extended widely throughout the entire area. Fergus was a sociable man and will always be remembered having a few pints with a few of his close friends each weekend where conversations covered all aspects of local and national life. The esteem in which he was held could be seen at the huge numbers attended the reposing of his remains at his residence on Monday and also at his Funeral Mass, in the Church of the Holy Rosary and burial in Cloontuskert cemetery. To his wife Mary, sons, Michael, John and Peter, brother Brendan, relatives and wide circle of friends we would like to extend our deepest sympathy.

Are you interested in Boat Building Braining Course?

This area has always had a proud tradition of boat building. Our community links with angling on Lough Ree and the Shannon led to the formation of a boat building training course in the Bord na Mona billets in Cloontuskert in the 1970s when dozens of new wooden boats were built there and next month a new training course helping people to build new lake boats, and perhaps attain a job with these skills, will commence in the Ballyleague-Lanesborough area. A top class boat building tutor with over 50 years of experience has agreed to lead the event over 20 weeks – during which four new 18 foot lake boats will be built as part of a project supported by the Department of Social Protection and Roscommon Integrated Development Company. A group of trainees is being finalised and we are now inviting additional participants for the boat building training. These participants must be in receipt of a qualifying social welfare payment or must be dependents of social welfare recipients and/or their families. If you are in receipt of one of the following DSP payments (or dependent on someone who is) you are eligible to take part in the training – that will not affect your payments in any way: Job Seeker’s Allowance / Job Seeker’s Benefit, One Parent Family Payment, Illness Benefit (Long term)/Disability Allowance, Invalidity Pension, Blind Persons’ Pension, Carers Allowance, Back to Work Allowance, Back to Education Allowance

State Pension

If you are presently on a FAS CE scheme you may also take part in the training – if you have the consent of your supervisor and/or the sponsoring committee. To declare an interest in taking part in the boat building training simply write down your full name, address, mobile number and your PPS number on a sheet of paper, drop it into an envelope marked BOAT BUILDING and leave the envelope into Joe Cribbin at Daybreak shop in Ballyleague or Joe O’Brien’s Corner Shop in Lanesborough before Monday September 8th. The training course will take place during both daytime hours and in the evenings and will also include some additional trainees who are working full time but wish to help out with the training and learn some of the skills so send in your details if you are interested. The number of places on the boat building training course will be limited so please send in details as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Rathcline GAA

Congratulations to our Intermediate team who had a semi final play off against Killashee on Friday evening in Killoe. What a match, possibly not notable for flowing football but for anyone that gets behind our team and has pride in the parish, it was certainly an exciting and eventful match. Both teams traded points in the first 15 minutes of the game with Rathcline just getting the better on the score sheet. James Hanley, Aaron Madden scoring well taken points with a few frees added in had settled the Rathcline men, but Killashee are a decent team and worked hard on redressing the balance and were a constant threat on the break away down the pitch. The score that altered the game in normal time came 7 minutes before the end of the first half, when a poor kick out was intercepted by James Hanley and a cool finish by lobbing the keeper. Four points up at half time but then came Killashee, showing composure and a great work ethic, it was a game that ebbed and flowed constantly throughout the second half with Killashee clawing their way back into the game, as the end neared, Rathcline went a point up, but with a minute gone in injury time, Killashee again drew the match. Extra time was played and in such a pressure environment scores were hard to come by. Rathcline were composed and passed the ball until within shooting range where our men went a point ahead in the second half of extra time. Killashee had a chance of a replay with a free kick at the very end but it went wide. Rathcline in the end showed wonderful character, and it should be pointed out that Killashee proved willing opponents. It was a truly exciting game played in a great spirit. We now meet Connolly’s again in the semi final. Your support is vital and as under dogs we need the support of the parish. Please check the fixture list for time and venue.

There was no jackpot winner of the Rathcline lotto this week. The numbers drawn were 4,7,9,35,37 and 44. Next week’s jackpot is €1800. The €25 winners were Terri and Charlotte Skelly Rathcline, Kevin and Caroline Madden Rathcline Road, Tom Mulvihill Cullentra, and Frank Regan Rockwood.

Some lines are still available for our tickets to the All-Ireland Hurling Final in Croke Park. It’s a great prize for what promises to be a great day out. Lines are €2 each and cards are in shops around the parish.

Ladies

The Minor team were defeated by Mullinalaghta in the second round of the championship on Sunday. After a great opening game against Killoe, the girls fell short against Mullinalaghta. The team who is comprised of some excellent footballers can now re-focus and work hard for their next game against Clonguish. Hard luck this time but our Minor girls are still in the competition, so all focus now on the next match.

The senior ladies are looking forward to a Senior B championship semi final against Colmcille next Saturday. These ladies have worked extremely hard all year and have a promising squad. It’s a massive chance to reach another final. The game is in Colmcille and throw in is at 6.30. Your support for the ladies would be appreciated and we wish them and the management team the very best of luck!

Minor Club

Another week another football filled list games for all levels at under age. It’s fantastic to see our minor set up playing big games at this time of year, and fair play to everyone involved.

Our Minors have a massive match against Slashers in the A championship on Wednesday evening in Grattan’s. This promises to be another thrilling encounter and spirits will be up in the camp after a one point win against Killoe in the first round. Check fixture list and our facebook page for the throw in time for match. Best of luck lads.

The U 16’s are playing the derby match against Cashel in Clonbonny on Thursday evening. Again no time available yet so keep an eye on updates. This game is the Shield semi final, a big match and your support for this home game would be appreciated.

The U 14’s play Colmcille in Grattan’s at 7pm on Tuesday. Another big game as it’s the championship semi final. This year has gone well for the U 14’s, like all under age teams they have worked hard in training, so the very best of luck to you all.

The U 12’s play Ballinalee tomorrow night, Monday and they have one more match to full fill in the competition later on in the week. Best of luck to all involved!
