Definition of Quirky!
On Friday 31st October there will be a fantastic new and novel quirky quiz taking place in Lanesboro. This will be a quiz like nothing gone before or every likely to be again. It will challenge your worldly knowledge on all aspects of life and you will be royally entertained throughout the night. It is said that all premises throughout the town are ordering in brain food to satisfy the great hunger for knowledge that will be needed on Friday night the 31st October.
You are invited to get all your friends, work friends and club colleagues out for what promises to be a unique and fabulous night. This will be a night not to be missed by you or any of your friends near or far.
New Draw Launch on Friday evening
Rathcline club is inviting you to their club grounds on Friday next at 7pm in Clonbonny. They will launch their new 50/50 club draw that will commence next week. The idea of the draw is that the amount collected will be shared 50/50 between the winning envelop and the club e.g. club sells €500 worth of envelopes, the winning envelope drawn gets €250 and the club receives €250. The more that take part in the draw the greater the prize share for the winning envelope. This draw will take place every week and there will be one very lucky winner.
This is a fantastic opportunity for just €2 to win a nice sum of money and be part of a new and unique way of fundraising by the Rathcline club. The club is seeking full support from everyone for the draw, from all sections of the club, past players, members and the general people of the area are asked to be very supportive. Envelopes will be on sale from next weekend and it is hoped that there will be a massive response and good luck to each envelope buyer.
Defibrillator Course/Refresher
A new defibrillator course will take place in the very near future. There will also be a refresher course. You never know the time or the hour that your training in the use of a defibrillator will be required and your ability to save a life.
Leave your name and phone number into O’Brien’s and you will be notified of the date of the course. It is also important that those who need to do their refresher course also give in their names.
Country Boy
‘Country Boy’ a play by John Murphy and performed by Athlone Little Theatre takes place in Backstage Theatre ,Longford on Friday 3rd October at 8:30pm.The proceeds of this performance is to raise much needed funds for the Ardagh and Clonmacnois Assisted Pilgrims Fund .Each year it organises to take sixty assisted pilgrims to Lourdes for six days. These Assisted pilgrims stay at the hospital and are looked after by voluntary helpers and a number of youth workers selected from a number of the schools in the diocese. Rathcline GAA Lotto
Saturday night last 27th September the numbers drawn for the Rathcline GAA lotto were 10, 16,17,18,23 and 25. There was nobody with the four numbers required and the jackpot of €2,100 remains not won. The four winners of the €25 prizes were Peter Donlon, Lisrevagh, Martin Skelly, Newtowncashel, Peter Creamer, Longford town and Kathleen Donlon/Fiona Gillen. Next week the jackpot will rise to €2,200.
Asian Clam Updates
The scientific research has been going on all last week and is now almost complete under the leadership of Inland Fisheries Ireland. The results will be dissected thoroughly and following discussions detailed work will commence immediately to help curb the growth and numbers and try to eradicate clams from the Shannon waters. They will never be eradicated but with this work they can be controlled by environmental monitoring. In the words of IFI CEO Dr Ciarán Byrne “This hot water stretch has changed forever”. With proper pre and after disinfection by all fishermen and the remedial work necessary to limit the number of clams fishing will again thrive on the hot water stretch.
ESB has agreed to finance the disinfectant stations as a part of their overall involvement in the working agencies working to create an excellent fishing environment once again.
All agencies are putting a lot of time and effort in this work and while most of the time we do not visually see anything happening rest assured there is great work going on with great urgency.

Missing from the Tuesday Runs
Every Tuesday evening the Lough Ree Athletic Club holds a run in Clonbonny starting at the cemetery car park. The results of each run is posted in our shop window with correspondent times showing where each youngster improved their time on a weekly basis. While this is a great involvement for all the young boys and girls, getting out for some regular exercise and getting to know others from all other areas that make up the Athletic Club. It also helps towards preparation for the upcoming Primary Schools cross country championships in both Longford and Roscommon and the Connaught Primary School championship. It also would be a great help for the second level cross country championship that will also be coming up in the very near future.
Looking at the list in the window I notice a mark absence from a lot of the local townies who I see on a daily basis. Perhaps parents or teachers are not aware of these Tuesday runs but I am sure that a fair few of the missing names would be right up there with the best of the times –even beat the times. We should all encourage the youth of our area to get out and be active with all sporting clubs and the Tuesday runs would be a great help for getting fit for whatever sport they are involved in.
Having spoken to the Athletic Club I have been told that the County Primary Schools cross country will take place this week. On this Thursday 2nd October the Roscommon county cross country will take place in Summerhill, Athlone. On Saturday next 4th October the Longford Primary Schools will take place at Moyne Community College with the Connaught Finals in Sligo on Saturday 18th October.
I hope next weekend I am receiving results of all schools in the area having taken part and getting great results in both Longford and Roscommon cross country championships and looking forward to the Connaught finals.

Lanesboro Library
Lanesboro Community Games Under 13 Project Competition winners will display their project entitled ‘The Role of the Internet’ in the library from Monday 6th October for two weeks. The winners of the competition are Áine Kennelly and Patrick Smyth. Many hours were spent preparing this project and well done to all involved on winning 4th place medal in the recent National Finals of Community Games in Athlone. All are welcome to come and see their wonderful work.
Harvest Service
The annual Harvest Service of Thanksgiving will take place in St. John’s church Lanesborough on Sunday 12th October at 4pm. Everyone is welcome to come and give thanks for the wonderful year we have had – all the good things we received during the year full and plenty due to wonderful weather conditions. Do go along and join with prayer and praise.
Lough Ree Golfing Society
The final ‘Golfer of the Year’ competition of 2014 is to be held in Dunmurray Springs Golf Club, Dunmurray Hill, Kildare Town this Friday 3rd October. The tee is booked from 11 to 12 noon. This is a very lovely course with magnificent views of 7 counties from the 8th tee! The society has also secured a very good deal for 18 holes of golf with tea and scones beforehand and main meal afterwards. If you are coming text 0879730611 as usual. Strictly Come Dancing over the Bridge
The coming together of Rathcline and St. Faithleach’s for Strictly Come Dancing is creating a great interest and excitement. The Radisson Blu Hotel is the venue for what should be a very special night for the clubs and the dancers. The dancers are deep into their training schedule and this is one night in the calendar that should not be missed. Tickets, priced at €20 each, are available in O’Brien’s and from any member of the Rathcline club executive or from members of the St. Faithleach’s committee.
Whist Drive Returns
The Lanesboro Social Services Whist Drive returns on this coming Friday night 3rd October for the opening of their new season of Whist Drives. Lanesboro Social Services is a wonderful committee within our parish for the tremendous unseen work they do on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. The whist drive is a major contributor in them being able to carry out their great work. Every card player is urged to go along and bring your card playing friends for a fun evening in the hall. The game will start at 8.30pm and it would be great to see a huge number turn out for the opening night.
Italian Conversational Classes at Lanesboro Library
Are you interested in learning conversational Italian? These classes are aimed at adults wishing to develop their conversational skills and are particularly suited to people travelling abroad or even for parents wishing to help their children with their homework.
The class will be one hour per week for six weeks. Each six week course costs €30.

Deaths
September 2014 will always be remembered for being a wonderful month weather-wise – a month of sunshine – following on from a great summer. For two homes, despite all the sunshine there was a great share of darkness.
On Friday 19th September at Mullingar General Hospital the death was announced of Maureen Maloney, Cloontuskert. Maureen, a proud Kildare lady was a woman tall in stature and big in heart. She was a personable lady who had a great turn of phrase and having spent some time in her company a few weeks back I learned to appreciate her wit. She came to Cloontuskert along with her husband Dick when he came to work on Bord na Mona. Anyone that knew Maureen will be greatly saddened by her sudden departure. Her passing will leave a void in our hearts and minds. She was a great mother and home keeper and her passing is deeply felt by her husband Dick, sons Richard and James, daughters Margaret and Dolores, relatives and many friends to whom we extend our deepest sympathy. Her remains reposed at Farrell’s Funeral Home on Tuesday last until her removal to The Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague. Following her Funeral Mass her remains were laid to rest in Cloontuskert cemetery.
The entire area was shocked and saddened to learn of the death on Wednesday last 24th September at her home at Tuam, Kilrooskey of Lucy O’Connor following a tragic accident. Lucy was a woman of great vibrancy who worked in the Sacred Heart Hospital Roscommon where she was a valued member of staff. A native of Dungarvan Co. Waterford Lucy she blended into the local community very quickly and was always available to help anyone no matter what their needs were. She was a lady of great vibrancy and had a great outlook on life. She had a great popularity that clearly spanned all age groups. The esteem in which Lucy and her family were held was clearly seen by the huge and widely representative turnout at her home on Saturday for her wake and again on Sunday at her Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church in what was one of the biggest funerals ever seen in Ballagh. Following Mass her rains were laid to rest in Kilgefin cemetery.
To her husband Patsy, daughter Una, sons, Stephen, Peter, Kevin, David and Patrick sisters, including Maura Quinn, Ballyleague, brothers relatives and friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Social Evening Returns

Join Shannonside Camera Club
Have you a camera? No, it does not have to be a top of the range camera. Everyone with an interest in camera work and how to properly use your camera are invited to come along and join Shannonside Camera Club. Shannonside Camera Club is now recruiting new members. The Club focuses on an exchange of ideas and information among members as well as guest speakers and photographic outings. The club meets on the first Tuesday of each month in the ESB Sports & Social clubhouse. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday night next 7th October 2014 where an introductory photography class will be held at 7:30pm followed by our scheduled meeting at 8pm.
This is a wonderful opportunity to go along and take the first class at 7.30 and become part of an excellent and vibrant club.
Set Dancing Classes
Set Dancing classes will resume in Sorohan’s Bar, Ballyleague on Tuesday nights at 8pm. All are welcome to come along and be part of wonderful nights of set dancing. Beginners and experienced dances welcomed. For details please phone 086-8546433.
Anyone for Tennis
A meeting has been organised to see if there is enough interest or support for to set up a new tennis club in this area. Tennis coach Richard Turner (Level 2 Tennis Ireland/Kells) has over 20 years experience coaching both adults and juniors at all levels, qualifying at level 2 in 2000. He is also a qualified Cardio Tennis Instructor as well as a Special Needs Sports Instructor and he is coming to Ballyleague/Lanesborough to meet children and parents and any other adults interested in getting some professional tennis coaching. Richard will meet anyone interested in joining on Saturday October 4th at 6.30pm at Ballyleague tennis court and, depending on the turnout that evening, will arrange a weekly coaching session in the area. If enough people are interested a new tennis club may be formed. To declare an interest please send your name and telephone number with the name of the child/adult for coaching to loughreebaytennisclub@gmail.comm and make sure to turn up at the tennis court beside the marina in Ballyleague on Saturday next October 4th at 6.30pm to meet the coach.
Shannon Gaels
Sunday morning last was another great day for the minor team when they had an excellent victory over Colmcille in Clonbonny. The team seem to be gelling better together the longer they go on in the minor competitions the better they seem to be getting as a panel. Presently they are in the Minor A championship against Clonguish on Saturday next in Farneyhoogan at 2.30pm. They are also in the Minor B championship final which is presently fixed for Saturday week at 1pm and are also in the Minor League Final at a later date.
There is a county development squad U14, U15, and U16 tournament next week and we are happy to say that we have 5 on the U14 and 2 on the U16 Development squads – a great thing for our club being represented on a county squad.
We would like to apologise to some of our supporters who travelled to Dunbeggan for the Minor game on Sunday. The game was refixed for Clonbonny late in the week.
Our U8 players about 18 in total are all asked to make themselves available for the commencement of the U8 Indoor tournament in Kenagh on Friday next between 7.30 and 8.30pm. Alan Maxwell is in charge and parents are asked to ensure that their young players are available to Alan for the U8 tournament.
Our U12 team lost their Division 1final to Slashers last weekend. It was a tough game to lose as we were right there up to the end. Great credit to all the players for their performance and team management of Seadna, Pauric Farrell and Ciaran Prior for their excellent preparation of the panel. They will now play the Division 2 final on Saturday next in Pearse Park at 1pm where they will take on Northern Gaels. We wish all the very best and look forward to another great performance and a glorious homecoming.
U10 – The U10’s will travel to Newtownforbes for the Floodlit U10 Respect Exhibition Go Games. It is very important that team manager Duncan Murphy has a full panel to choose from. All parents are asked to ensure that their sons are available for the games on Wednesday week 8th October.
Scór – Teams are now being finalised for the upcoming Scór na nÓg and the club is very grateful to the great support we received. Scór na nÓg is a very vital outlet for all young people of the parish especially for those that do not play football. It brings a great excitement to the club and participants. We look forward to great fun and effort again.
Rathcline GAA
Although the on the pitch at Intermediate level things have gone quiet, we still have the league final to look forward to. The lads have stayed together and enjoyed a good run out against Slashers in a challenge match. With the Intermediate final on Sunday resulting in a draw, our match will be put back, please check fixture list at a later date as to when out league final takes place. Off the pitch and Rathcline GFC do not stop working; the club is rolling out a new weekly fundraiser. The 50/50 draw which has worked very well in other parishes is going to unveil on Friday night. A €2 envelope which is signed by the participant is put in a draw and one winner will win half the jackpot. So for example if there is €1000 in the pot for that week in question, and your envelope gets pulled, then you win €500, the more it is supported the more money any person wins. It’s a weekly draw and again one winner will win half the jackpot. It is important to stress that its hard work keeping the club afloat with huge debt hanging over the club, its vitally important that anyone connected with the club through playing, supporting or having a child involved gets behind this draw. Everyone has an opinion on the running of the club, but rarely are they seen to help to push the club on, we would urge people to take a chance on €2 a week, a chance to win and a real support of a club that is at the forefront of lots of people’s lives, in a sporting sense. The debt will not last forever, but with a push from the community we can pay it off as soon as possible and leave the club in a better way for future executives and everyone that participates in football in the parish.

The fever of the Strictly Come Dancing is bubbling up well in both parishes of Rathcline and Faithleach’s. As some of you have noticed, there are various cards out and about for certain dancers, whether they be nimble or slow, these dancers are going to be putting in huge effort in the next few weeks. The judges on the night will be looking at all the different facets of their moves on the dance floor and people from both parishes are making are making sure they impress through practice sessions. There are cards in the town where you can give your support at €1 a line to a dancer on the night, please support these brave men and women as they start their dance journey which culminates at the end of November. Stay tuned for more info on this great event in partnership with Faithleach’s.

Now to football, and it was a disappointing end to the Minor ladies football championship adventure. After a great start in the championship and with a great array of talent, our ladies were beat by Mullinalaghta in the semi final. In the first half Rathcline dominated the possession with Zoe Gallagher and Áine Bannon playing very well. The possession didn’t show on the score board however and Mullinalaghta took their chances when they came, Rathcline went in at the break 5 points down. In the 2nd half Rathcline to their credit fought back through some excellent play by Ciara Healy, Una Clarke and Lauren Guinan, they were so in the zone they actually went 1 pt up with 4 minutes remaining. Mullinalaghta had a girl sin binned and it seemed the balance would tip over the Rathcline ladies but alas the opposing team scored a goal and then quickly Rathcline gave up another goal. Laura Peters replied with a goal for Rathcline but the game was in the last minute and our girls hadn’t the time to bridge the 3 point gap. A very good team that were caught out in the semi, there is no doubts that games like this can only bring a squad on for next year. It is hoped that all players make themselves and Mike Greene. It’s a gut wrenching defeat but there is always another year. Thanks to available next year as there is great talent at under age in the Rathcline set up. Well done to the squad, and the management of Steve Peters, Dan McGann, Caoimhe Murray, Paula Kenny, and Madeline Murray everyone for their hard work and commitment throughout the season.
Our U 12’s were beaten in the Division 1 final on Saturday against Slashers. A brilliant game that went down to the wire finished on a score line of 2-6 to 10 points. A one point win for Slashers. These U 12 lads have trained hard all year and have shown they can mix it with the best of them in the county. Their season isn’t over yet though. The division 2 championship final takes place against Northern Gaels in Pearse Park at 1 o clock on Saturday. Your support for this team would be appreciated.
The Minor team continue to surprise and delight their followers as they reached the Division 1 Shield final after beating Colmcille in Clonbonny on Saturday evening by 5 points. Described as a brilliant game by those in attendance, this pulsating match had it all. Western Gaels throughout this season have shown huge guts on big occasions. The ability to beat A championship teams regularly goes unnoticed by the public but to anyone connected to this group and its supporters, it is not. A team that seems to be improving with every match they play in are a sight to behold. It is complimentary to say they have reached an A shield final, but also factor in that this B team can reach an A championship final when they play Clonguish on Saturday. I’ve been lucky enough on 3 occasions to have watched this team, and really and truly they are a sight to behold, form keeper to forward and from smallest to biggest there is a never say die attitude and willingness to win that is quite contagious, make an effort to cheer on this group of lads and see for yourself, we wish team and management the very best of luck.
After a great summer at under age level for example U 6’s U 8’s and U 10’s, it’s a real shame to have to report that only 4 children turned up for the indoor U 8 blitz. We had groups of 14 children taking part in the summer. These indoor blitzes bring the team together properly in the right environment. Let’s make an effort to give these kids a real special memory of the U 8 team, and we urge parents to get in contact with Alan Maxwell who is coach of the team. It’s a small effort but one that will bring your child on in leaps and bounds as they start their GAA life.
Thanks to all the parents and kids that supported Scor last Saturday in the Hall. The club would like to announce that it now has 4 groups to enter Scor with. A competition that has been well supported throughout the years and also the club has done very in. We wish all participants the best of luck.
St. Faithleach’s GAA
Hudson Bay Hotel Group – Senior Football Championship: Our Seniors Championship Semi-Final game against Padraig Pearses was postponed on Sunday last as a mark of respect to our Goalkeeper Stephen O’Connor and his family on the death of his mother Lucy O’Connor. The Club extends deepest sympathy to Stephen and the O’Connor family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. The semi-final game has been refixed for Saturday next 4th October, in Kiltoom at 7pm.
Junior B Championship Quarter-Final: Our Juniors game against St. Aidans was also postponed on Friday evening last. The game will now be played on Friday evening in Kilbride at 8.30pm
Minor Men – D4 Championship: Our Minors championship game against Elphin has been refixed for this coming Saturday 4th October at 4.30pm in Ballyleague.
U14 Girls – LGFA Finals: Following on from their success in the Féile Peile na nÓg competition whereby the Girls were D2 Shield runners-up, the team were invited to the LGFA All-Ireland Finals in Croke Park. Prior to the finals, the girls played a challenge match against the U14 Girls, from Fingallians and won this game 2-12 to 3-04. A great day was had by all, with some thrilling matches in the LGFA Intermediate, Junior and Senior All-Ireland Finals. A fitting way to end a tremendous year for the team, their mentors, families and all involved.
U13 Boys – Féile Roscommon: Our U13 Boys Féile game against St. Michaels has been refixed for this coming Tuesday 30th September at 7.00pm in Kilbride.
U12 Boys Skills: A number of our U12 Boys have been selected to represent the club in the Connacht skills competition this coming Friday 3rd October in the Connacht Centre of Excellence, Ballyhaunis. We wish all players the best of luck.
Lotto: The numbers drawn were – 3, 4, 7 and 24. There was no jackpot winner and the five €20 winners were – Harry O’Donnell, Anna Egan, Majella Kelly, Evelyn Clarke and Vera O’Sullivan. The next draw will take place on Tuesday 7th October for a jackpot of €12,000. The team in charge is – James Irwin, Jimmy Brennan and Martina Dunne.
Cards: Cards takes place every Tuesday in the clubhouse at 8.30pm. All are welcome to come along. The results of last week’s games are – winners, Sonny/Eugene. Runners-up, Pat/Jack. The last game winners were Paddy/Mick.
Table Quiz: Our Mothers & Others Team is participating in the LGFA Gaelic 4 Mothers & Others National Blitz in Dublin on Saturday 18th October. To fundraise for this event, the ladies are holding a “Table Quiz” in the clubhouse on Friday 3rd October at 9.00pm (Table of Four (€40), spot prizes on the night. Your support for this event would be much appreciated
2014 Ultimate Accumulator: With only a handful of events remaining in our accumulator here are the current standings: Enda Lannon leads on 10points, Derek Thompson and Henry Kenny (Snr) are both on 9points, followed closely by Ollie Pender, Claire Kenny, Tommy Keenan, Enda Kenny and John Casey all on 8points.
Strictly Come Dancing – Fundraising Event: Tickets are now available for “Strictly Dancing over the Bridge” our joint fundraising event with Rathcline GAA which will take place on Saturday 29th November in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Athlone. Tickets €20 are available from committee members and local outlets. Transport to the event will be available on the night, details to follow. People are advised to get your tickets early as limited number available.

Tickets cost €5 each or 3 for €10. Draw will take place on the 2nd January 2015 in the clubhouse.
