St. Patrick’s Day Launch
The Lanesboro/Ballyleague St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be officially launched in Clarke’s bar on this Friday night 27th February at 9pm. It is hoped that there will be a great number from all organisations and clubs within the community and all interested in supporting the parade.
Fair Weekend
The Fair Day has just become a Fair weekend when the committee met for their last meeting, they confirmed that the Lanesboro Fair would be a two day event on 2nd and 3rd May. This is a new departure from previous years not only with the date being moved forward from February/March to May Bank Holiday but also that the plans are for it to be a two day festival.
The committee have ambitious plans for a fabulous weekend in Lanesboro. The details of the weekend will be announced in the next few weeks. It is an ambitious plan and it deserves the full support of the entire community – wherever you can help in the build up and running of the event please make it your business to throw in a hand.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the Jacinta Mullooly and the extended Mullooly family Curraghroe on the death of Gertie Sammon, formerly Mullooly, Coralstown, Mullingar, who died on Sunday 15th February. Her remains were laid to rest in Clontuskert Cemetery following her Funeral mass in St. Cecelia’s Church, Curraghroe.
Rathcline to make exciting Announcement
In the next week or so the Rathcline club will make a major announcement. It will seek the support of everyone that ever had anything to do with the parish and or the club.
The search and memories goes on!
Have you looked up old photographs for Stella O’Sullivan in the library? She wants the old photographs of all the businesses of the Main Street going back as far as possible. If you think you have old photographs please go and search and bring them to Stella where she will copy/scan them and return them to you.
Adding in the extra businesses I omitted over the past few week there was Josie Kiernan’s in Knock where he ran, for time, a paint and wall paper shop and this was followed by his son Jerry who had then ran a video shop from there before he moved down to Liza Clyne’s where the video shop continued for a number of years. Out the Longford Road a house once stood where the front wall of Louis and Geraldine Skelly’s house now stands. That was the first residence of the Sisters of Mercy in Lanesboro before buying and developing their convent on Main Street. After the nuns, Mae Egan, who married Mike Kenny lived there from where she ran a thriving hairdressing business. While I mention all the businesses of Lanesboro over the years I cannot forget naming one of the landmark shops in the parish, a shop that is still going and that is Mrs. Harold’s at Rathcline crossroads.
If I am missing anyone please let me know, as Stella needs to know the businesses and she really wants the photographs to create the history on Main Street through photographs.
Céilí on Sunday Week
Following the great success of the Céilí in December the committee will hold another céilí in St. Mary Parish Hall on Sunday week 8th March. The sets will commence at 4pm and the dancing will continue until 7pm. The last céilí was mighty and we are hoping that all local dancers will be advertising it at all their dance lessons and also at the celli’s they attend in the next few weeks.
As usual refreshments will be served and a number of door prizes will also be won in the raffle. Admission will be €10
Death
The local community was stunned and deeply saddened on Saturday 14th February when it was learned of the sudden death at her residence of Agnes Browne, Church View. Agnes, a native of Killoe came to live in Church View many years ago with daughter Louise. Agnes was a very quiet and reserved lady. She had all ladylike manners and she soon became a very popular lady in our community. Her warmth of greeting and wonderful smile left a lasting impression with everyone that had the pleasure to meet and know her. Her passing will leave a great void in the community and also in everyone’s heart and mind. She was a magnificent and loving mother to her daughter Louise and their bond was so great that, invariably, once you seen one coming down the street you always seen the other by their side. Agnes will be sadly missed by us all but none more so than by her daughter Louise and her wonderful companion Mike.
Her remains reposed at St. Joseph’s Hospital Chapel on Tuesday before being removed to St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro. Her Funeral Mass took place on Wednesday and afterwards she was laid to rest in Killashee cemetery. To Louise, Mike, brothers John, Liam and Thomas, sisters Margaret, Mary, Ellen Anne and Brigit, relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.
50/50
The lucky envelope was drawn in the Clarke’s Bar on Monday night last by Brendan Ward. The lucky winning lucky envelope was in the name of Bernie Hanley, Corrigeen and she was the lucky recipient of received €408 for her €2 investment. You too can be the lucky winner of the 50/50 draw all you have to do is to put €2 into one of the blue envelopes and next week it can be you.
Your support is greatly helping the club as there is a lot of ongoing work happening in Clonbonny and all monies are spent locally and keeping local business ticking over during these hard times. There is also a lot of voluntary work happening in Clonbonny and the club is deeply appreciate for the support of FAS and everyone that helps out in making the club grounds and more welcoming place for players, parents, supporters and visitors.
Lanesboro Bridge Club
The results of the competition held on Wednesday 18th February are; N/S 1st Gemma Douglas and Elish Gray, 2nd Maura Hanley and Mairéad Gill and 3rd Brid mc Dermott and Una Lawlor. E/W 1st Eileen Kelly and Una Clarke, 2nd Mae Casey and Noreen Dunne and 3rd Maureen Hynes and Patsy Canavan.
Players are reminded that the pair’s competition is played over two nights commencing on this Wednesday 25th February and 4th March. Fees will be taken up on the first night. It is hoped that those playing on the first night will also be available on the second night.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade
We are just five weeks away from the first major event of the year in our community. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been growing and growing since its beginning a few year ago. The committee would like you to be as inventive as you can be when designing your float and to be entertaining for the thousands that line the street on St. Patrick’s Day. The closing date for entries is Thursday 12th March and all entries must be made to Freda Connaughton, Longford Road, or they can be left into O’Brien’s Corner Shop. All entries must be accompanied with a €20 entry fee and the importance of the entries being made in time cannot be stressed enough as the logistics of the day will then have be put in place and this takes time.
The day will commence with a traditional mass that, this year, will take place in St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro at 11.30pm. Music, song and dance will be provided by the parish choir and local dancers.
The prizewinning categories are; Best dressed window, Best club, Best junior, Most original, Best business, a new category this year, Best Vintage, and the Overall winner.

Sympathy
We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Bernie and Mark Casey and family, Lehery, on the death on Thursday last 19th February of Bernie’s mother Mrs. Frances Lennon, Carrickedmond.
Cloontuskert Enrolment
Cloontuskert National School will hold an enrollment evening on Tuesday 24th February from 6-7pm. All welcome to come and visit our school, meet with the teachers, pupils and parents.
Anthony Healy Card Game
Friday 13th is going to be a very lucky day for one very lucky person. Tickets are on sale for an absolutely wonderful prize and it is a draw that you should definitely have your ticket for such an excellent prize. The first prize is a heater stove that will be supplied and fitted by Shane Healy Plumbing and Heating and Gordon Heating Supplies. To buy and have one installed would be very pricey but to win it in the draw would be fantastic. Tickets are only €10 each and are on sale locally in almost all business premises.
The annual Anthony Healy Memorial Card Game will take place in Clarke’s bar on Friday 13th March starting at 9pm.
We all remember Anthony with a great fondness and his memory never diminishes and it is very fitting that the proceeds from the card game and the draw will go to the Mayo Roscommon Hospice. You are asked to be very supportive of the draw and also the card game.
Lanesboro Pike Angling Club
Annual membership is now available from any committee member or from the Yacht bar. The fees are Adults €10 and OAP and juniors €5.
There will be a special prize for non-fishing members with details to be announced at a later date.
These coming years will be very busy and driven for the club and they seek your full support.
The recent formation of the angling hub to cater for an international fishing competition in 18 months’ time will have great benefits for the community and we would like to ask everybody to throw their weight in behind the club and the hub. This development will be very beneficial for the entire community.
Kiernan’s celebrate
Congratulations to Jerry and Sinead Kiernan who on Friday night next 27th will celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the opening of their pub, Kiernan’s, in Ballymahon. They will celebrate the occasion with a gala night in the pub where TR Dallas will be the main event with a host of of other musicians joining in the celebrations. It promises to be a great night and I am sure that there will be a huge number from the parish travelling to celebrate with one of our own.

Lanesborough PS Enrolment

Strictly DVD now on Sale
The DVD’s of the wonderful Strictly Come Dancing Over The Bridge has now become available. This night was one of the best nights ever in the communities of Rathcline and St. Faithleach’s and now that the DVD has become available the night will forever live on. Rathcline Cemetery
Presently, there is a lot of work going on at the cemetery and if you have a little time on your hands the committee would encourage support for Johnny Hanley in getting this work done completed in a short space of time as possible. Bring along a shovel and barrow and do your bit in getting the job complete. On entry you can see the work that has to be done and your time will be greatly appreciated.
Shannon Gaels
The club would like to extend deepest sympathy to the Casey family Lehery on the death of Bernie’s mother, Mrs. Frances Lennon, who passed away last week Shannon Gaels Minor and U16 continues every Tuesday from 7 to 8pm in Co-Op hall. U13 and U14 training continues on Friday 27th in Clonbonny from 6.30 to 7.30pm.
Clean and Lean Bootcamp
Would you like to join in the experience of a Bootcamp? This Bootcamp will have a fully qualified nutritionist as well as a fitness instructor. Commencing from this Wednesday 25th February and continuing for 6 weeks until Easter the Bootcamp will take place twice a week Wednesday 7.30 to 8.30pm and Saturday from 10 to 11am. The cost is €60 for the 6 weeks of classes plus nutrition plan, paying in advance €50 for the 12 classes or €5 per class paying as you go. Rathcline Ladies say Thank You
The Rathcline Ladies club would like to extend their deepest gratitude to everyone that supported their Church Gate collection at all Masses last weekend.
Training for U14 and U16 ladies takes place every Sunday at 12 noon.
The ladies club is part of the group hosting the play Padraig Potts Guide to Walking that take place in the hall on Saturday 7th March. The club encourages everyone to go along for a night of laughter.
Sigerson Medal for the Parish
Last Saturday was a proud day for one family in the parish and indeed the parish and particularly the GAA in the parish. David (Daithí) Mulvihill, son of Tom and Mary Mulvihill, Cullentra was the sub goalkeeper on the DCU team that overcame UCC in a remarkable game of football. Tight, tense, riddled with great play and errors in abundance made it a wonderful spectacle. It was nip and tuck from start to finish and such was the intensity of the battle that 60 minutes could not separate them and after 20 more minutes of extra time DCU emerged victory by one point.
David has been an outstanding goalie for Rathcline over the past few years and it was no surprise to see him vying for the goalies jersey with DCU. We hope that his goalkeeping abilities will not go unnoticed and that there will be many greater days for him in the future.
Annual Ronan Mc Cormack Challenge
Plans are well underway for the Ronan McCormack Charity Challenge 2015 which is happening in Roscommon on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th March.
It is that time of year again where organisers try to raise funds for charity, encourage participation and bring business into town. On March 6th and 7th Roscommon looks forward to welcoming runner’s walkers and cyclists from near and far and of all abilities to the start lines. Each person will enjoy a fantastic challenging experience whilst remembering a wonderful young man and his 2 friends along with helping our charities with much needed funding. Ronan was sadly taken from this world in a car accident in May 2010. He was just 26 years of age. This charity challenge is to remember Ronan and to remind people of the love and laughter, amusement and devilment that he brought to our world for the short while he was with us.
Over the last 2 years 600+ participants cycled 100km and/or ran 5km to raise €53,000 for The Jack and Jill Foundation and Roscommon Special Olympics Club. This year the chosen charities are the Jack and Jill Foundation and Pieta House West. There will also be a donation made to Burrenview Child Development Centre Galway and Roscommon Special Olympics Club.
The interest in this year’s event is amazing and the numbers participating will hugely exceed numbers from the previous 2 years. We have large groups out training during the weeks and at weekends. Training builds friendships and interest in a common goal. Registrations are flying in daily with huge interest from people outside of the county. Our Facebook page has close to 16,000 followers at the moment and growing daily. The event this year will be held on Friday 6th March with a 10km digitally timed Moonlight run/walk around Roscommon Town at 8.15pm and then on Saturday the 7th (which will be Ronan’s 31st birthday) there will be a cycle with a choice of 60, 100 and 160 km.

It is expected that this weekend will be very well supported and bring athletes/families/tourists into town. As in previous years the spin off if supported correctly will hugely benefit the local business community. Nothing similar to this event has been organised in Roscommon town before but the interest in it from people from the county and far beyond is growing daily and it promises to be a great weekend. After the trials of both challenges a social night will be held in Foxe’s Goff Street Roscommon on Saturday 7th where our annual darts competition will be held with valuable prizes on offer on the night. Places are filling up fast so it would be advisable to register soon to guarantee your place. You can do this through our Facebook page or by texting 0861721181.Organisers wish to thank most sincerely participants who have registered so far. Your support is more than appreciated. It will still be possible to register on the day. Registration for the 10km Moonlight run/walk will open at 5pm on Friday 6th. It will also be possible to register for the cycle during this time. On Saturday morning 7th Registration for the cycle will open at 7.15am. Sponsorship cards are also available and any donation however small can make a big difference. €10 buys one hour homecare for a child with special needs and €20 goes a long way to fund an hours counselling for someone who needs the service of Pieta House. Padraig Potts Guide to Walking
A play written and performed by the highly acclaimed Seamus O’Rourke will be staged in Lanesboro Parish Hall on Saturday 7th March at 8.30pm. Seamus is no stranger to Lanesboro’s Parish hall and his previous plays have received great attendances. This promises to be another great night of hilarity and a play not to be missed. As Seamus says of the play“The play follows the life of Padraig Potts McKeirnan, who has a habit of just eating whatever is on his plate… metaphorically that is… from growing up near the tiny rural village of Drumnamee, County Leitrim in the 70’s and 80’s to falling in love with Silvia Lang, a perfect protestant girl… to marrying Mary Tague, the priests housekeeper, who he never really liked… to getting rid of Mary Tague and her mother, who he claims invented vinegar… and eventually to the realisation that the world isn’t as big as he first thought”.

St. Faithleach’s
St Faithleach’s GAA in conjunction with the HSE are running a suicide awareness and first aid course on February 25th @ 6.30pm, it is open to all coaches and /or parents, if interested in partaking please contact Monica on (089)4523066 before said date to book your place. U16 Boys – Division 2: Our U16 boys were defeated by St Ciaran’s on Saturday last. Final score 2-09 to 1-05. Minor Men – Division 2: Our minor men have their first league match against Elphin at 11am on Sunday 1st March in Elphin.
U16 Girls- Division 1: Our U16 girls have their first championship match against Padraig Pearses at 4pm on Sunday 1st March in Pearses. A table quiz will take place on Friday 6th March in the clubhouse. Table of four is €40 all teams are invited to attend, non-club members are more than welcome and a fun night is guaranteed. Rathcline GAA
50/50 Draw – Congratulations to Bernie Hanley, Corrigeen, who was last week’s winner of €408 in the 50/50 draw. The draw takes place every Monday night at 9pm and envelopes are available in all local businesses and only cost €2.
Padraig Potts’ Guide to Walking – The play Padraig Potts’ Guide To Walking, written and performed by Seamus O’Rourke will take place Saturday March 7th at 8.30pm in St. Mary’s Hall, Lanesboro. A great night’s entertainment promised! Tickets only €10 are available in O’Brien’s and from executive members.
Membership is now due for the coming year. Players’ registration fee is €50 and non-playing members is €20. Players are asked to pay their registration to Brendan Rhatigan or James Hanley. With the new season due to start next month player registration is compulsory and players must be registered before they can play. Non playing members can pay their fee to Peter Skelly or Denis Crinigan.
Minor Club

Ladies Club
