Rathcline go to Galway on Monday
All roads lead to the world renowned Galway Races starting on Monday 27th July and continuing until Sunday 2nd August. Rathcline GAA club host a race evening on the opening evening. The event continues to grow in popularity and this year is no different judging by the interest already shown in the event. It is a fund raiser for the club but first and foremost it is the opportunity for the community to go to the races in the company of friends and neighbours and sample the Galway races in a state of luxury.
Tickets for the races are prices at €100 each and this includes a view overlooking the finish line with spectacular views of the Galway countryside , a four course meal, one free drink, tipsters in the pavilion, bar facilities, tote in the pavilion and after meal entertainment. Go along and have a fabulous evening as an opportunity as this only comes once a year and it is an occasion not to be missed.
Local Successes in Kilbeggan
The best place to be last Friday was at the race meeting in Kilbeggan. It was a very successful evening for three locals whose horses were running in the early races of the meeting.
The second race on the card was the Coola Maiden Hurdle over 2 mile where The Scourge owned by the Barstool Prophets Syndicate was a hot favourite starting at the short odds of 13/8. The horse did not disappoint the backers and indeed his owners in the syndicate winning by ½ length. Mary Connell, Cloontuskert is one of the syndicate members and she was presented with the winning trophy.
The following race was the Best Dressed Lady Competition Handicapped Hurdle where the well supported favourite at 2/1 for this race was Damefirth owned by the Wilde at Heart Syndicate. Damefirth did not disappoint as she won in convincing style and local members of the syndicate are Carmel and John James O’Reilly and Madaleine Murray. Madaleine receive the winning trophy from Weather newsgirl Nuala Carey who was there to adjudicate the Best Dressed Lady at the race meeting.
A great number of locals work in Cameron in Longford and Friday was their annual day out at the races in Kilbeggan. They were on hand to celebrate the local success and it was wonderful to see so many locals striking it lucky with local horses on Friday.
Hopefully there will be much more success for both syndicates in the coming weeks and months.
The Green – a living history
During the week PC Judge formerly of 39 called into the shop on his way back home to his native Mayo. PC recalled his time on the Green from 1955 to 1961 and the wonderful memories he had when living here. From the many school friends to playing in John Gill’s field and exploring the quarries and the woods. On his visits he enjoys nothing more than taking a walk around the Green and recalling everyone that lived there during his time and from time to time meeting some of the residents from his time.
It is wonderful to welcome back to the Green, Mary Patterson, nee Nolan, who lived on the Green many years ago. Mary’s father was a sergeant in Lanesboro Garda Station before their move to the Green and later to Kilcormack in Co. Offaly. Mary got a warm welcome back by the old families on the Green who fondly remember the Nolan family when they lived on the Green.
Next week I hope to begin the residents of each house and I am asking for your assistance and memories of everyone that lived in each house. I have a great number but, I feel, there are still a number missing and your support will be invaluable in creating an exact history of everyone that lived on the Green.

Five Year Tax Relief Forms
By filling in the new five year tax relief form now you will not be asked to do so again before 2020. Forms are available in the church porch and the completed form must be returned to the designated box in the church porch on or before 26th July.

Exhibition to open this Friday
All the collecting of photos, signs, memorabilia and names of every one of the businesses of the main Street of Lanesboro and Ballyleague is now in place for the exhibition that will be launched in the library on Friday next 24th July at 7pm. It is expected that the exhibition will draw huge interest locally as all the businesses will be documented with photographs and other memorabilia.
This is a journey everyone should take on the night and over that weekend.
Croagh Patrick
The annual pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick takes place on Sunday next26th July. This year a bus service will leave St. Mel’s cathedral at 5.40am, from Tarmonbarry Grotto at 5.50am and the Percy French Hotel, Strokestown at 6.10am. If you wish to avail of the bus you are asked to phone 086-0405621 or 087-6613510 to make your booking.
When travelling you are advised bring a packed lunch, a bottle of water and a long stick to aid you when climbing
Annual Pilgrimage
A limited number of seats are still available for the annual pilgrimage to Lough Derg that takes place on Sunday 23rd August. The bus will leave Farrelly’s bus depot at 6.40am and will pick up at Kenagh, Derryhaun, Lanesboro and Ballyleague. Booking can be made with Mary, phone 043-3321969.
Next Golf Outing
The next outing of the Lough Ree Golfing Society is to the beautiful Portumna Golf Club on Saturday next 25th July. The tee is booked for one hour from 1 pm to 2 pm.

Nature Competition
As part of the program of events during the Summer School Festival this year, and in conjunction with Abbott Longford, the committee are hosting a Junior Nature Competition titled “Our Local Environment” on next weekend 24th 25th and 26th July 2015. It is open to all national school students and encourages a love of nature through enquiry-based learning and provides an opportunity for students to display their knowledge & discoveries. There will be one category, for ages 8 to 12. This is a unique type of competition in Ireland and it is hoped, in future years to make this into the premier environmental Junior Nature competition in the country. Competition is open to all National schools in the Midlands and will be judged by personnel from Abbott Longford. Projects will be displayed in the Lough Ree Community Resources building during the festival.
The theme “Science in Nature” encompasses all aspects of our local environment e.g., Animals, Plants, Junior Trees, Land or Waterways, and should be displayed in a visual billboard type of display on A3 poster. Individual or group entries are welcome.
Projects must be returned to: Lough Ree Community Resources, Main Street, Lanesborough, Co Longford, no later than Friday the 24th July 2015.

Ladies GAA club
The club would like to thank Caroline Rhatigan and Phil Munnelly for their gracious sponsorship of tops for the ladies senior team. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
The U14 ladies will play Mullinalaghta in Clonbonny in their semi-final on Thursday at 7pm. Go along and support the ladies and enjoy a feast of ladies football.
The senior ladies will play their third round of the championship this coming Sunday in Clonbonny at 3.30 when they take on Killoe. This is a vital game for the ladies and we wish them the very best of luck and hope there will be a great number in Clonbonny to cheer them on.
The U12 summer league take place every Monday and the girls are having great fun as well as great success so far.
Congratulations to our chairperson Madaleine on the second consecutive win of her horse Damefirth at Kilbeggan races last week. Madaleine is part of the Wilde at Heart syndicate.
Wedding
The marriage took place at St. Mary’s Church Lanesboro on Thursday 16th July of Imelda McAuley, Cushendall, Co. Antrim daughter of James and Olive (nee Connaughton, Cullentra,) McAuley, and Declan McLarnon, Lisburn, Co. Antrim son of Roy and Maria McLennon. Matron of Honour was Celine Black, sister of the bride and the bridesmaid was Leona McAuley sister of the bride. Bestman was Aodhán McKinley cousin of the groom and groomsman was Conor McLean friend of the groom. Pageboy was Noah Mc Kay nephew of the bride and Flower girl was Molly Mc Nally cousin of the groom. The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr Michael Reilly, Lanesboro. The wedding reception was held in Glasson Golf and Country Club. We wish the happy couple many years of wedded bliss.
Lanesboro Tri Club
Post-Race Social for all our Marshals: Lanesboro Tri Club invites all those who marshalled at our recent Two Provinces Triathlon to a “Thank You” evening on Saturday 25th July in Sorohan’s Life Belt Bar Ballyleague at 9pm. As a gesture of appreciation for volunteering to help out at our race, all marshals names will be put into a draw. So please come along and mingle with our club members who are very grateful for your input. It promises to be a great night of fun, music, banter, finger food and spots prizes. We also hope to show the video footage of the race on the night. We hope to see you there.
Charity Swim: The date of the annual Sponsored Swim is fast approaching, and now that our most successful Aquathon and Triathlon are behind us, it’s time to switch focus to raising funds for this years nominated charities and perfecting our swim strokes for Monday 3rd August at 2pm. Last year, we raised almost €9,000 for Join our Boys and in 2013 we raised over €7,000 aid of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, both of which were fantastic achievements for our club and very much appreciated by the beneficiary charities. This year, we are continuing our Two Provinces theme as we will be raising funds on behalf of the Roscommon Disability Support Group and St. Christopher’s Services Longford. Both RDSG and St. Christopher’s do Trojan work in the communities west and east of the Shannon and are very deserving causes for our club to support. The swim course runs from Kilnacarrow bridge to the bridge in Lanesboro. We will again have plenty of safety boat and kayak cover in place and we will ferry swimmers to the start point from Lanesboro. It’s downstream from there!!! We strongly recommend that anyone planning to undertake the swim should have completed a minimum 1.5 km non-stop swim before accepting this challenge. Wetsuit use will be compulsory for all swimmers for safety reasons and swim caps will be provided to all participants. As in previous years, this will be a non-competitive swim. There will be no prize for first place as we want our chosen charities to be the winners on the day. We will have some spot prizes which will be raffled amongst all participating swimmers.
As a club we have benefited from some significant sponsorship and local support to help stage events since our formation. The local community have again been very supportive of the club this year as evidenced by the amount of non-club members who volunteered to help out at both our Aquathon and Triathlon. With this in mind we’re asking for as many of our members as possible to take part and help raise funds for these worthy causes.
Sponsorship cards are now available by emailing sponsoredswim@trilanesboro.com confirming your interest and we’ll post a sponsorship card to you as soon as possible. Participation is not limited to Tri-Lanesboro club members and we will be inviting other local Tri club and swimming club members to participate also. For safety reasons, we may need to cap numbers but For those people who may want to take part in the swim but don’t want to have to collect sponsorship, we’ll ask for a minimum donation of €25 on the day. Also if you’re not swimming but would like to support this worthy charity swim please give something to sponsoring a swimmer. Critically as insurance costs and swim hats are being funded by the club, 100% of all monies collected will go directly to the charities.
We really want to continue and build on the success of what has become a most enjoyable annual fixture in our club’s calendar. We would like to invite members of the community to come out on Bank Holiday Monday and support the swimmers, give them a cheer as they finish the challenging Ironman Distance Swim.
Congrats to John Gilleran who put in a fantastic performance at Lisadelle Olympic Triathlon in Sligo, finishing in a fantastic time of 2:23. Well done John. All that training is paying off. Great racing.
Well done to those who took part in the Open Water Swimmer events in Hudson Bay at the weekend and also to those who took part in the Great Dublin Swim at the weekend, especially Ronie Masterson who took 4th in the 1.6k. Well done Ronie. World Championships Predator Boat Fishing will be staged on Lough Ree
The Shannonside twin towns of Lanesborough and Ballyleague have beaten off stiff opposition from Fermanagh and Westmeath to win the right to stage one of the most prestigious world fishing events next year.
At a news conference on Friday July 17th the national Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland and the Lough Ree Angling hub confirmed that, further to a meetings held by the event organisers in recent months with representatives from interested parties to include Roscommon and Longford County Councils, Inland Fisheries Ireland, Lakelands Tourism, ESB and Bord na Mona and the Angling Council of Ireland, the NCFFI have accepted a proposal from the Lough Ree Lanesborough Angling Hub to stage this event at the North of Lough Ree, the second largest lake on the River Shannon system. Subject to funding sources and a FIPS-ed technical inspection of the venue this November the Championships will be held here in October 2016.
It will be a pleasure to showcase this area of Lanesborough and Ballyleague to the world class lure anglers also bringing a boost to the local economy estimated at a quarter of a million euro to this rural area. With the support of the NCFFI we can be sure to provide a warm welcome to the competitors from all over the world who are coming here.
Speaking at the launch the Lough Ree Angling Hub Chairman Hugh Keane said this good news announcement was very welcome and much anticipated. “A lot of hard work has been done by the new angling hub in the last six months and we see this decision as a public endorsement of our tremendous work in promoting angling in this area” Hugh said, “the challenge for us now is to find adequate and appropriate accommodation in the local area for as many of the visiting 250 anglers as possible – and we will also need the support of approximately 40 lake boat owners.”
The Lough Ree Angling Hub has now invited all tourism accommodation providers within a half an hour radius of the area and local lake boat owners who are interested in hiring out their services for the 4 days of the event to get in touch by mail to: loughreeanglinghub@gmail.com
Today’s announcement by the hub coincides with a visit to the Lanesborough-Ballyleague area by Ann Phelan TD, the Minister of State responsible for rural affairs. During her visit the Minister was given a tour of the local area – and presented with a letter seeking support for funding to be provided by her department towards the provision of a new economic regeneration study for the Lanesborough-Ballyleague area.
“This new study is urgent ” Hugh Keane said, “job numbers in ESB and Bord na Mona have decreased substantially over the last 20 years and we need to plan ahead now for the next ten years – by examining viable projects in not only angling tourism but right across the local community so that local people can stay at home and get employment here in years to come.”
Lough Ree Environmental Summer Festival
The 17th Lough Ree Environmental Summer Festival takes place 23rd to 26th July 2015. The Festival has over the years attracted local, national and international visitors to share in the events with the remit of raising awareness of environmental issues. The event is open to everyone, even those with just a fleeting interest in environmental matters. This year’s programme aims to provide something for everyone to explore our beautiful environment and enjoy the great outdoors. A feature this year is a 3 day poetry workshop facilitated by renowned poet Noel Monahan. We will also be delving into our past with an exhibition of photographs celebrating the businesses through the ages. Due to popular demand we are bringing back bush craft camping and a stained glass workshop. Fishing, archery, woodland and bog trips, as well as family fun by the lake are also listed on the programme available from local shops. Tennis Club
Tennis Coach Tim Clarke from Ballaghdereen is making himself available to provide tennis coaching for children – aged 5 to 16 years old – here in Ballyleague, Lanesborough for five days in a row in the week starting Monday July 27th. Tim is recognised for his work with young players in several counties already and will offer coaching sessions of one hour duration between 10am and 11am, 11am and 12 noon and 12 noon and 1pm each day from Monday July 27th to Friday July 31st. Players will be coached in groups of 6 and in their own age groups. Lough Ree Bay Tennis club members can avail of the hour long coaching session for just €5 per hour (€25 for 5 sessions over the week) while non-members of the club can get 5 daily sessions for 35. Intermediate Championship – Our first intermediate championship game of the year is finally upon us as we face Kenagh in Cashel this Friday 24th July at 7.45pm. This will be the first of three group games where we also meet Sean Connolly’s and Legan. The top two from the group go through to the semi-finals. We are hoping that this year can finally be our year. It would be great to see a large crowd in Cashel on Friday night. Best of luck to all involved.
Junior Championship – The junior team managed by Seamie O’Brien will play their first round of the Junior Championship against Ardagh in Clonbonny next Sunday July 26th at 12pm. We hope to see some new and old faces togging out this year for what we hope can be an enjoyable and successful competition. Best of luck lads.
Clonbonny hosts Intermediate Championship games – This Sunday July 26th Clonbonny will be the host of two intermediate championship games. At 1.45 Ballymore will face Ardagh. Then at 3.15 Cashel will play Killashee. A feast of football on Sunday with the juniors and then these intermediate games. We get a chance to see the teams in action that we may play if we progress to the semi-finals.
Rathcline GAA Galway Race Day – Our annual Galway Race day will take place Monday 27th July. The club hope to replicate the success of last year’s event. The occasion will present our parishioners, members, supporters and friends a fantastic afternoon of hospitality and horse racing on opening day of the 2015 festival. Tickets are priced €100 and are available on a first come first served basis and must be paid for upfront. 50/50 Draw – Congratulations to young Emma Farrell (daughter of Alan and Joan Farrell) C/O Yacht Bar who was last Monday’s winner of €460 in our 50/50 draw. Ballyleague Village Renewal
Pride of Place: Some months back the Ballyleague area was asked to submit an entry in this year’s Pride of Place competition – the annual event that celebrates not just a clean and tidy town with good community facilities but the very best community spirit and outstanding achievements by all sorts of groups, individuals and clubs in a parish. It was great to hear news recently that not only has the Ballyleague entry been successful – the community has now been asked to compete on the national stage and represent county Roscommon in the national finals of Pride of Place this summer. Roscommon county council has now informed the community in Ballyleague that the national judges in this competition will be visiting the area for half a day on Tuesday August 18th at 1pm and to help make preparations for the event a number of community meetings took place recently. Representatives of each and every club and organisation in Ballyleague and Kilgefin are invited to take part in the presentation to the judges when they arrive. Some advance planning will be necessary. All clubs will be asked to submit an A4 page of details on their club history and recent achievements for the judges. That gadget in the Riverside Park’
Since it re-opened to the public at the end of May the new Ballyleague riverside park has been trialing a new system of education and awareness on the issue of dog litter. The audible warning device on both entrances to the park simply reminds owners of dogs that is illegal for them to allow their dog to foul the park – and it also reminds the public that this issue can also cause severe damage to children and others using the park.
The new bins and bags available at each entrance also make it easier than it was in the past for dog owners to clean up after them.
The Ballyleague tidy towns committee wish to report that since June 1st there has been a reduction of 80 per cent in the amount of dog littering in the park. The improvement in the behaviour of owners has been transforming and young and old can now walk through the parkland without fear of walking through dog litter. A very small minority of dog owners continue to ignore the advice given to them when they enter the park – and to assist these owners in the coming weeks the Roscommon county council dog warden will be visiting the area on a random basis and speaking to dog owners who are flouting the law and those who are not cleaning up after their pets. A word of advice – if you want to avoid an on-the-spot fine of €150 please co-operate with the dog warden who will be in the park next week. Finally – for those who use the park daily – the audible warning device trial is now almost over – the ‘gadget’ has done its job and will be taken down at the end of the month. Midland Draught Horse Society
The fifth Annual Midland Draught Horse Society will take place on the farm of Paddy Egan, Glanmore Kenagh on Sunday next 26th July. This is Ireland’s only all horse haymaking event and special guest on the day will be local musician and celebrity Declan Nerney who will be working his recently renovated Horse Drawn Mowing machine.
There will be a host of added activities including Wheel Wright demonstration, Traditional Music, Horse Shoe throwing, Carriage Driving and much more. The event will begin at approx. 1.30pm
Features of the day will be the Horse Drawn Lawn Mower which is over 100 years old and a fabulous Stage Coach brilliantly restored both are magnificent of time past.
This is an event that should be hugely entertaining and informative for the younger generation and if you have visitors and wondering where to spend time on Sunday then Kenagh is the place for everyone to enjoy a wonderful day out.
