Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Birth

Many congratulations to Louise Kearney and her husband Kevin Chapman, Lisnacusha on the birth last week of a baby girl.

The Green – a living history

The families that I have recorded living in the first four house ion the Green are No 1 there were two families with the same name Smith on no 1 one of the families emigrated to England and the other family moved to the Bord na Mona works at Coill Dubh beside Naas, Co. Kildare. The next family there was the Mc Naboe family and they moved to North Longford. Thanks to Ester Donlon, Moher formerly Ester Dee No 4 for all the previous information. Tony and Tess Murphy were the next residents and they were longtime residents on the Green. Tony and Tess had four children Eithne Mc Caffrey now resident in Ballyleague, Stella O’Sullivan now resident in Gurteengar, Oliver now a resident of Roscommon and Claire Glennon a resident of Clonadra. Following the death of Tony and Tess the house was bought by Ronan and Claire Glennon and living in it since were Aija Galdika and her daughter Irena and it is now occupied by Darren and Stephanie Reilly and their family.

Death

The death occurred suddenly and tragically in Edinburgh, Scotland on Monday 6th July of Laura Ann Cox, Tullyvarron, Curraghroe. Laura was a student just finishing her college education when the tragedy occurred. Her college course took her to many parts of the world. She was a young vibrant and beautiful girl who had the world at her feet. She exuded confidence and her warmth of heart for one so young was a joy to behold. Laura made her mark with everyone that had the pleasure to meet her. The warmth of her smile enlivened even the darkest soul. She will be sadly missed by the community of Curraghroe and communities far and wide.

Laura’s remains reposed at her family home on Tuesday last 21st until her removal to St. Cecilia’s Church, Curraghroe for her Funeral Mass on Wednesday. Following Mass her remains were laid to rest in Cloontuskert cemetery.

To her father Seamus, mother Eileen, brothers James, Shane and Daniel, grandparents Michael and Mary Cox, Ann Mulhern, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Lough Ree Golfing Society

On Saturday last the 25 July the society had a very successful outing to the exquisite, scenic Portumna Golf Course. The balmy summer day and a golf course, immaculately manicured was the perfect setting for a very enjoyable day’s golf. The greens were fast but true and some very decent scores were returned. We had three visitors and the winner of the visitor’s prize with a magnificent 38 stableford points was Jarlath Reynolds who just pipped Tony Gavigan with an equally great score of 37 points.

Nearest the pin was won by John O’Donnell, ladies by Bernie Taylor, back nine: Harry O’Donnell, front nine: Michael Jordan. The third place among the members went to Jackie McDonnell on 34 just winning with a better back nine over Michael Jordan who also had a good 34 points. Second prize was won by Alan Farrell with a splendid 35 points and the first prize was captured by Liam Rosemond on 38 points. Well done to all and as always we all were winners after so enjoyable a day. Everyone who played want to return and full praise to Portumna staff, Leonie the secretary and the wonderful restaurant staff. The food was exceptionally good.

The next outing is our Captain, Mick Brennan’s prize day in Birr, Co Offaly on Saturday, September 19 from 11 to 12. Birr is one of the finest midland courses, presenting a mixture of mature woodland and rolling eskers which represent the nearest inland equivalent to the links courses around our coasts.

Sponsored Swim: Lanesboro Tri club are one again hosting a sponsored swim on August Bank Holiday Monday afternoon. Last year over €8,000 was raised for JOIN OUR BOYS and this year we are raising funds on behalf of the Roscommon Disability Support Group and St. Christopher’s Services, Longford. Interest in this year’s swim has been strong, and not just from our own club members. We have swimmers coming from Longford, Roscommon, Westmeath, Kildare and Dublin as word spreads of previous year’s events and we are planning for a 100 strong team of triathletes and swimmers making their way along the 3.9 km swim course from Kilnacarrow Bridge to Lanesboro. The downstream swim will start at 2pm with the first swimmers expected back in Lanesboro from 3 pm onwards. As in previous year’s, there are no prizes for coming first in this event. All funds raised will go directly to our chosen charities with all running costs being covered by local supporters and the Triathlon club ourselves. This swim is about raising funds great causes while embracing the challenge of a long distance swim. Some of our members who completed this event last year only started swimming the previous winter and could never previously have envisaged themselves swimming almost 4 kilometers but by training with the goal of completing the challenge they far exceeded their own expectations. Donations and sponsorship can be made by contacting any member of the Lanesboro club or emailing sponsoredswim@trilanesboro.com.”
