The Green – a living history
In my previous notes on the residents of No 1 I had no names of the families apart from surnames. If anyone can enlighten me as to the names in the families it would be great as it would be nice to have each house with the names of all residents.
In No 2 I have been told there was a family with the surname Ralph, followed the Tom and Eileen Reynolds and their children Anne, Co. Limerick, Seanie (RIP) Glasson, Rosemary, Mullingar, Tommy, England, Jim, Co. Wexford, Fr. Kevin, Ahascragh, Co. Galway, Brendan (RIP), Cloontuskert and Teresa, England. They were followed by Ray and Betty Hogan and their children, Donal, Lanesboro, Declan, U.A.E., Barry, Lanesboro, Mairéad, Australia and Conor, U.A.E. No 2 is now occupied by Mick Carroll and his wife Phil (nee Donoghue from No.7) and their children Dwaine England and Michelle, Lanesboro.
Student Kayaking course
Beginning on Monday 10th August Junior Hannon will be holding a kayaking camp on the Shannon in Lanesboro. The course will run from Monday to Friday- all gear will be provided. The cost of the course is just €65 and the course will run from 10am to 1pm each day.
Lough Ree Defibrillator Group
Lough Ree defibrillator group is a local voluntary group. The group was set up in 2007 when it was realised the tremendous need for defibrillators and people to use them. Recognising the urgency, donations were sought from the people of the Lanesboro and Ballyleague area and you responded most generously. The response was enough to purchase four defibrillators and six air conditioned cabinets for the area. ESB generously sponsored two further defibrillators and this is what has been used to maintain the area. The defibrillators are strategically placed throughout in the specifically designed air conditioned cabinets. The AED’s are placed at St. Mary’s hall, Main Street, at Hanley’s Hardware, Ballyleague, on the front wall of Cloontuskert National School, at Cullen’s filling station, Harold’s Cross, Rathcline, and the wall at the front of Mark Casey’s, Lehery.
The group are also involved in training Responders from the locality how to perform CPR and the use of the AED’s. Presently there are close to 100 Responders trained in the area. There are two instructors in the area who voluntarily provide the initial for the Responders, this is then followed up with skills nights where Responders refresh their training. Responders are re-certified every two years, so training is occurring regularly throughout each year. If you are interested in receiving training to be a Responder, which is provided free of charge, should leave their name into O’Brien’s Corner Shop, with their contact information or phone 3321107. When sufficient numbers have given in their names then training will take place.
The ongoing maintenance of the AED’s is very expensive with frequent replacement of the pad and the batteries. Training costs are minimal as there are two instructors locally. To meet the on-going costs, the group, two years ago made an appeal to all the local businesses in the area to which they responded brilliantly. A very big thank you to all the businesses in the area for their support of that appeal.
To supplement these costs, each year, there is a Church Gate collection. This year the collection will take place on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd August at all masses. As this is the Defibrillator Group’s only source of income each year they would appreciate your continued wonderful support.
50/50 goes to Cashel
The 50/50 draw took place on Tuesday 28th July, Tuesday because of the club’s day at Galway Races on Monday. The winning ticket was drawn in the name of Marian Fagan, Newtowncashel who was the lucky winner of €505. Tickets are on sale throughout Lanesboro and cost only €2.
This draw commenced last October and the club has paid out to local winners over €17,000. The club urges your continued support.
Annual Pilgrimage
A limited number of seats are still available for the annual pilgrimage to Lough Derg that takes place on Sunday 23rd August. The bus will leave Farrelly’s bus depot at 6.40am and will pick up at Kenagh, Derryhaun, Lanesboro and Ballyleague. Booking can be made with Mary, phone 043-3321969.
Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock
The annual Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock Shrine will take place this year on Sunday 6th September. Further detail later.
Cemetery Sunday in Killashee
A lot of local parishioners, particularly on the east side of the parish, have relatives buried in the Killashee parish. There are also a good number of Killashee natives living in our parish and, I am sure, they would all like to be reminded that Cemetery Sunday will take place on Sunday week 16th August commencing with Mass in Killashee Cemetery at 10.30am, in Ballinakill Cemetery at 3.00pm concluding with prayers in Clondra Cemetery at 7.30pm followed by evening Mass.
Annual Cycle
The annual Tarmonbarry 100km Cycle Challenge takes place Sunday 16th August. 100km 10am, 50km 11am; Family 20km Cycle 12noon. Details on Facebook – Tarmonbarry 100KM Challenge
Ladies Rugby
Longford Ladies rugby is recruiting new players for the upcoming season. Training Tuesday and Friday at 7.30pm in Longford Rugby Club. New players very welcome. Great way to have fun, make new friends and get fit. For details contact Nuala 086 7340208
Rathcline GAA
Intermediate Championship – Our second game of the intermediate championship against Sean Connolly’s takes place next Sunday August 9th at 2.30pm in Drumlish. The lads will be hoping to make it two wins out of two which would see us set up for a semi-final spot. Best of luck to all involved.
League Division 2 – Well done to the lads who had a comprehensive victory over Legan in the league on Friday night. The game finished 6-10 to 0-06 with some impressive scores from Rathcline.
Junior Championship – After our absence from the junior championship for the last few years the junior squad got together for our game against Ardagh on Sunday. Players of old dusted off their boots joining some new faces for a great win. The game finished 2-22 to 1-06. Well done to Seamie O’Brien and his squad. Next up for the juniors is Mostrim next Sunday August 9th at 12pm in Mostrim.
Clonbonny hosts Intermediate Championship game – Next Friday night August 7th Clonbonny is host to Cashel V Grattan’s at 7.45pm in the intermediate championship. With wins for the two teams already both teams will be hoping for victory which might put them one step closer to a semi-final spot.
Galway Races – For the third consecutive year our annual Rathcline GAA Galway Race Day proved hugely successful and was enjoyed by one and all. The Best Dressed Lady prize of a bottle of champagne and a hamper kindly sponsored by O’Brien’s Pharmacy was won by the beautiful Marie Peters. The club would like to thank everyone for supporting this very important fundraiser for Rathcline and a special word of thanks to our main sponsor Bernard Keane of SuperValu Lanesboro who has come up trumps again this year. As you know it takes a massive amount of effort and fundraising to keep a football club going. We have top class facilities in our club grounds in Clonbonny facilitating all our senior players, ladies club, and all the underage teams. Thanks to all dignitaries and county board officials for your generous support. Thanks also to Fiona and the team in Ballybrit for their great service. Thanks to Phil Munnelly who sponsored the wine at the event and to Brian Ross who provided the music at the end of the night. Thanks to all who donated prizes for the raffle. 50/50 Draw – Congratulations to Marian Fagan, Newtowncashel who was last week’s winner of €505 in our 50/50 draw. The draw is proving hugely successful with lots of local winners. Since the draw began in October we have given out more than €17.000 in prize money. Envelopes are available in all local businesses and only cost €2. The draw takes place every Monday night at 9pm.
Pride of Place
The people of the village of Ballyleague and the parish of Kilgefin are preparing for the visit of the adjudicators in this year’s National Pride of Place awards.
Every club and community group in the parish has been invited along to St Faithleach’s GAA clubhouse and Ballyleague parish hall on Tuesday August 18th at 1pm to meet the judges.
A lot of work has been done already in the parish and a special appeal is going out to everybody to come along for the event. Pride of place is an all island competition and is directed towards recognising improvements by local communities to create civic pride in their area. The competition focus is on people coming together to shape, change and enjoy all that is good about our area. The competition is hosted by Co-Operation Ireland under its local Authority programme in conjunction with the all island local Authority steering forum comprising officials from Authorities from both north and south of Ireland. In Pride of Place, community groups have the unique opportunity to showcase specific pride initiatives which will have long-lasting and positive impacts on their society.
Activities may include community centres, the tackling of social exclusion issues, the establishment of residents associations, or the provision of childcare facilities.
Kilgefin’s category will be judged on the following;
- Community participation which include the following sub-categories,
- Level of involvement from individuals and groups Evidence of community involvement in providing support to youth, people with disabilities, minorities and the elderly. Active involvement with local agencies, local council and business. Evidence of innovation.
- B. Impact on Community/Area,
Engagement of residents/business in caring for the natural and built environment. Sustainability and long-term benefits. Preservation of the culture of the area. Linkages with neighbouring communities
The full co-operation of every club or organisation is required over the next 2 weeks. We need a liaison person who will be available to attend all meetings for the next 2 weeks and provide us with a brief outline of your organisation/clubs history. While it is an opportunity to showcase the work that your club has done we must be focused on the criteria that we will be judged on. We have a slot of three hours to make our presentation ON TUESDAY AUGUST 18TH and considering the amount of clubs involved, the briefs will range from 30 seconds in some cases to less than 5 minutes in others. We need you to come on board and help us with our preparations and make a record of your input as part of the overall presentation.
