The Green – a living history
Mary O’Halloran, nee Donoghue no 7, told me of the Christmas time on the Green when Santa Clause would be driven around on a flat back Bord na Mona lorry and deliver toys and presents to all the youngsters of the Green. Paddy (Panda) Hennessy from no.34 played Santa Claus and the equipment was always kept in Mick and Annie Rose O’Reilly house no.16 prior to them moving in. Mary also reminded me of the Bord na Mona big Christmas tree each year outside of Dee’s/Masterson’s no 4.
Last week I had not a christian name for the Ralph man in no.2 but thanks to Mickie Flynn, Rathcline Road he informed me that his name was Pat Ralph and he came from county Tipperary. Mickie feels he went back to Tipperary. Number 3 was occupied by the Arthur and Mrs. Watts and their son Des. Des still live in Lanesboro on the Rathcline Road. The next into no3 was the Lynch sisters from Leitrim and following their demise it was bought by Bernie and June Shields and the occupant now is their daughter Paula Shields.
The first occupants of no 4 was the Dee family John and Mary and their children Ester Maurice, Paddy and Peggy. The family moved to Coill Dubh where Maurice still resides, Ester married Joe Donlon, and they live in Moher, Paddy lives in Cork and unfortunately they lost their sister Peggy on Wednesday last and she was laid to rest in Glasnevin cemetery on Saturday. We extend our deepest sympathy to the entire family
Lough Ree Defibrillator Group
To supplement the costs of replacements for each defibrillator there is a Church Gate collection. This year the collection will take place on Saturday and Sunday week 22nd and 23rd August at all masses. As this is the Defibrillator Group’s only source of income each year they would appreciate your continued wonderful support.
50/50 goes to Cashel again
The 50/50 draw took place on Monday 4th August in Clarkes Bar. The winning ticket for the second week in a row went to Newtowncashel. Gaye Skelly was the lucky winner and she received the winning prize of €420. Tickets are on sale throughout Lanesboro and cost only €2.
Kids angling contest a wonderful success
The annual Lanesborough Pike Anglers children’s competition took place on Saturday 8th August 2015. Twelve children took part in this event. The day was a success with all children catching large quantities of coarse fish (Perch, Rudd and Roach). Trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places were presented. Medals and fishing tackle were presented to all participants. All entrants were given 1 on 1 instruction throughout the day. Some of the entrants were new to angling, and all caught fish. Well done to Noel, Brian, Eithne and Gerry and the club who give their own time to help children to fish. 1st Prize went to Adam from Kilteevan who was only on his second fishing trip. 2nd Prize went to Tom and 3rd Prize went to local angler Elizabeth Clyne.
IFI staff cut the heavily weeded section during the week, and conditions were perfect on the day.
Postman moves
Changes within An Post delivery service see Colin Hannify, our local postman move back to his native Drumlish – some say just in time for the Marquee which starts this weekend. Colin has been with us in the Lanesboro/Rathcline/ Ballyleague postal area for the past 10 years. We wish Colin great health and happiness in Drumlish. We would like to say a big thank you to him for all great deeds over the years, he became a big part in the lives of all he delivered post to.
Local lady Aileen Toolan will take over the Ballyleague/Cloontuskert area with Louis Mullooly and Willie Dennigan sharing the town, parish and into Cashel and Kenagh areas.
County Champion

Death
The death took place recently at the Sacred Heart Home, Roscommon of Mrs. Ellie Quinn, Cloonadra. Ellie was predeceased a number of years ago by her late husband Johnnie. Ellie was a tall and elegant lady. She was warm in her heart as could be seen by the many great deeds she did to anyone that was in the need of support. She was a lady of great faith and she left her legacy within the Ballyleague parish community. Ellie will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by everyone that came to know her.
Her Funeral Mass took place in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague and her remains were laid to rest alongside her husband Johnnie in Cloontuskert. To her daughter Breege, sons Sean and Padraig, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.
Annual Pilgrimage
There are just a very few seats available for the annual pilgrimage to Lough Derg. The pilgrimage takes place on Sunday week 23rd August. The bus will leave Farrelly’s bus depot at 6.40am and will pick up at Kenagh, Derryhaun, Lanesboro and Ballyleague. Booking can be made with Mary, phone 043-3321969.

The annual Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock Shrine will take place this year on Sunday 6th September. Further detail later.
Annual Cycle
The annual Tarmonbarry 100km Cycle Challenge takes place Sunday next 16th August. 100km 10am, 50km 11am; Family 20km Cycle 12noon. Details on Facebook – Tarmonbarry 100KM Challenge.
Death
The death occurred on Thursday 30th July at Innis Ree Lodge Nursing Home, Ballyleague of Josephine Best, Cloontuskert. Josie, as she was more know was a lady that left an indelible mark in the community. She was predeceased many years back by her late husband Paddy. Josie was a wonderful neighbour, a lady even during tough times never even blinked when it came to assisting neighbour or stranger alike. A native of Lorrha, Tipperary, she brought along with her a great love of sport. She was a proud lady, who took great pride in the excellence of her children and their successes. She was a lady with a great warmth and her wonderful smile endeared her to everyone that came to know her. Her passing will leave a great void in our hearts and minds.
Her remains reposed at her residence on Friday 31st July before being removed to the Church of the Holy Rosary on Saturday. Following her Funeral Mass Josie was laid to rest alongside her late husband Paddy. To her sons Martin and Padraig, daughters Marion, Olive, Josephine, Geraldine, Bridie, Sarah and Frances, relatives and friend we would like to extend our sincere sympathy.
Cashel Friday night is the place to be
A Table- Quiz in ‘The Local’ Newtowncashel will take place next Friday night, 14th August commencing at 9.30 pm. All funds raised will go to Cycle Against Suicide (CAS). This is a non- profit organisation. In May of this year the 1st leg of the CAS from Longford to Athlone and everyone was very supportive and completely inspired by this ‘Movement’. The funds raised will go directly into the School’s Programme which involves three large events each year targeting the message ‘it’s ok not to feel ok and it’s absolutely ok to ask for help’ at Second level students. This year CAS have invited people to organise spin-off events in their communities and this Quiz will be 1 of 50 events organised Nationwide to take place over the next 6 weeks. Please be as supportive as you possibly can for what is a most genuine cause.
Ladies Rugby

What are you doing Sunday Afternoon?
A Summer Barbeque in aid of Mayo Roscommon Hospice will take place at Clarke’s Bar on Sunday next 16th August at 4pm. There will be pig-on-a-spit supplied by Terry Mc Loughlin butchers. There will be music supplied during the afternoon and evening by many various artists. All proceeds will go to Mayo Roscommon Hospice.
This is one of the most worthy causes you can ever subscribe to and even if you cannot attend you are encouraged to buy tickets in support of the cause. Tickets are on sale in O’Brien’s and Clarke’s bar and they are priced at an extremely reasonable €5.

U12 Boys: Play Clan na Gael on Sunday 16th August U10 Blitz: St. Faithleach’s hosted the U10 group 2 Blitz on Saturday morning, thanks to Kilbride, Oran and Tulsk for coming, the ladies who provided the much needed refreshments and to Rachel Banahan and Sarah Brennan for refereeing the games. Drive in Bingo : Thanks to everyone who came to the Drive in Bingo on Bank Holiday Monday, it was thoroughly enjoyed by all and we will be doing it again on September 13th, full details will be in press and on our Facebook page over the coming weeks. Mothers & Others : The Mothers & Others are holding a clothing collection point on Saturday 29th August at the club grounds, for full details contact Ursula Kilcoyne or check out poster on the club’s page. Pride of Place : Judges will be in Ballyleague for the Pride of Place Awards which takes place in the Clubhouse on Tuesday 18th at 1pm.This is a community event with various groups and clubs showing what is best about the village of Ballyleague and parish of Kilgefin, and St. Faithleach’s GAA are delighted to be a part of it.
Rathcline GAA
Intermediate Championship – Congratulations to our intermediate championship team who had a 1-08 to 0-06 win over Sean Connolly’s on Sunday. This win puts us into the semi-final but we still have Legan to play in our last group game. The game against Legan will take place next Saturday August 15th at 6pm in Ballymahon.
Junior Championship – Our junior championship team will play Mostrim this Wednesday evening 12th August at 7.45pm in Mostrim. The team will be hoping to make it two wins on the trot. Their third championship game is now fixed for next Sunday 16th August where they face Dromard away at 12pm. Please check fixtures for confirmation of this game.

Lanesboro Tri Club
Sponsored Ironman Swim in aid of St Christopher’s Services and Roscommon Disability Services.
Big thanks to all who made the Charity Swim such a success. To all those who raised funds, to those who sponsored the swimmers, those who helped with water safety, hall set up, swim sign on, first aid, providing refreshments, swim entry, whatever way you helped out, a huge thank you again. We had over 70 swimmers taking part in this special event with two main winners on the day, St Christopher’s Services Longford and Roscommon Disability Support Group. Congratulations to all our swimmers who completed the task and swam an Ironman Distance Swim (3.4km) from Kilnacarrow Bridge to Lanesboro Bridge, in very challenging conditions which made it all the more rewarding getting to the swim finish. Well done again to all involved. A big thank you to those who gave their time to organising the event on behalf of the Tri Club.
Best of luck to those who are taking on the Ironman 70.3 Triathlon which takes place in Dublin next weekend. A group of our club members have been busy training all year, with this as their goal race of the season. The race starts with a 1.9km sea swim taking place in Scotsman’s Bay, Dun Laoghaire, south of Dublin city. This is followed by a 56 mile single loop bike course from Dun Laoghaire, north along the coast and through the centre of Dublin. It will continue out west of the city through Kilcock and the campus of the National University in Maynooth, which will also be a location for a feed station after which all will return to Phoenix Park, the location for Transition 2. The Phoenix Park will host the run and finish for IRONMAN 70.3 Dublin. We wish all our members who are taking part the best of luck. Watch out for your fellow club members on the course who will be out to show support.

A very big Thank You
Co Roscommon Disability Support Group (known to many as RSG), Derrane, Roscommon wish to most sincerely thank Lanesboro Triathlon Club for organising the Charity Swim on the river Shannon in Lanesboro on the 3rd August last. Monies in excess of €5,000 were raised and will be divided equally between RSG, Derrane and Christopher Services in Longford. An exact figure will be published when all sponsor cards are submitted. The Lanesboro Triathlon club covered all the expenses of the day and a local voluntary catering committee provided a variety of refreshments, so the full monies raised will go to the charities. RSG will be using the funds raised to assist with the provision of facilities for people with disabilities in the area. This will also include Independent Life Skills training for people with disabilities. RSG also wish to thank all the people who looked after safety on the water and brought everyone home safe and everyone else who helped in any way. It was a lovely occasion and a great air of goodwill surrounded the event. It is occasions such as this that helps people working in the charity sector to continue to be inspired to doing the work that much needs to be done.
Ballyleague Village Renewal
Clubs invited to St Faithleach’s clubhouse on Tuesday
The people of the village of Ballyleague and the parish of Kilgefin are preparing for the visit of the adjudicators in this year’s National Pride of Place awards.
Every club and community group in the parish has been invited along to St Faithleach’s GAA clubhouse and Ballyleague parish hall on Tuesday August 18th at 1pm to meet the judges.
A lot of work has been done already in the parish and a special appeal is going out to everybody to come along for the event.
Pride of place is an all island competition and is directed towards recognising improvements by local communities to create civic pride in their area. The competition focus is on people coming together to shape, change and enjoy all that is good about our area.
The competition is hosted by Co-Operation Ireland under its local Authority programme in conjunction with the all island local Authority steering forum comprising officials from Authorities from both north and south of Ireland. In Pride of Place, community groups have the unique opportunity to showcase specific pride initiatives which will have long-lasting and positive impacts on their society.
Activities may include community centres, the tackling of social exclusion issues, the establishment of residents associations, or the provision of childcare facilities. Kilgefin’s category will be judged on the following;
- Community participation which include the following sub-categories,
Level of involvement from individuals and groups Evidence of community involvement in providing support to youth, people with disabilities, minorities and the elderly. Active involvement with local agencies, local council and business. Evidence of innovation.
- Impact on Community/Area,
Engagement of residents/business in caring for the natural and built environment. Sustainability and long-term benefits. Preservation of the culture of the area. Linkages with neighbouring communities.
The full co-operation of every club or organisation is required over the next 2 weeks. We need a liaison person who will be available to attend all meetings for the next 2 weeks and provide us with a brief outline of your organisation/clubs history. While it is an opportunity to showcase the work that your club has done we must be focused on the criteria that we will be judged on. We have a slot of three hours to make our presentation ON TUESDAY AUGUST 18TH and considering the amount of clubs involved, the briefs will range from 30 seconds in some cases to less than 5 minutes in others. We need you to come on board and help us with our preparations and make a record of your input as part of the overall presentation.
