Home for Christmas

It was wonderful to see so many locals returning home for Christmas. This year there seemed to be more home than ever and it was great to see them moving throughout the area during the Christmas time. I hope that they had a wonderful time with family and friends and they make a safe and successful return to their homes in the next few days.

I would like to wish everyone a huge successful New Year and may the sunshine always fill your lives.

Wedding

The marriage took place at St. Mary’s Church, Rockcorry, Co. Monaghan of Dermot Cullen son of Ronan and Margaret Cullen, Rathcline Road and Noelle Carroll, daughter of Hugh and Phoebe Carroll, Rockcorry, Co. Monaghan. Bestman was James Gaughran best friend of the Groom while Chief Bridesmaid was Emma Carroll sister of the bride. The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Jerry White. The wedding reception took place in Cabra Castle Hotel, Kingscourt, Co. Cavan.

Lanesboro Community Games

Lanesboro Community Games Draughts: We will be practising for the County Community Games Draughts competition over the next few weekends. If parents are interested in letting their children participate in the draughts, please contact Padraig O’Dowd at 086-8147000. There are competitions in the following age groups: U10, U12, U14 and U16.

Christmas Day Run

Despite the very inclement weather conditions 142 people took part in the 2015 MS Christmas Day run, which was the 25th year of this event. Many thanks to all who took time out of their Christmas Day to participate and help raise much needed funds for a very worthy cause.

This year’s winner was John Mulvihill from Kenagh (who last won this event in 2013) in a time of 40 minutes 30 seconds. In second place was the 2011 winner, Gary Murphy, also from Kenagh, in a time of 43 minutes 25 seconds. While in joint third place was Patrick Sharkey (last year’s winner) Longford, Declan Newman, Longford and the first Lady, Adrianna Melia from Cashel in a time of 43 minutes 33 seconds. The second lady was Riona Murtagh from Kenagh in a time of 50 minutes while the third lady home was Ronie Masterson from Lanesborough.

The award for most sponsorship went to Jimmy Clarke from Drumlish, who was participating for the first time while the Outstanding Achievement award went to Kieran Nolan from Cashel.

The organisers would like to extend a very sincere thanks to all who helped out on the day and a particular thanks to Peter Hanley Motors for sponsoring the T-shirts, Midland Trophies in Ballymahon for sponsoring the trophies and all who helped with the refreshments in the Hall afterwards.

50/50

The 50/50 draw took place on Monday night last 21st December. The lucky winner of the Christmas 50/50 was Seamus Nolan, Fortwilliam who in his playing days gave great loyalty to the cub. Seamus received a cheque for €411The next draw will take place on Monday night next and your continued support will be greatly appreciated. Tickets are only €2

Dinner Dance

The Rathcline GAA Dinner Dance makes its long awaited return in the Radisson Blu Athlone on Saturday 23rd January.

Tickets priced €35 are on sale from members of the club executive or from O’Brien’s, phone 3321107, email joea@iol.ie or text 0862460840 to book your tickets.

New Year Draw

The Rathcline club has just launched their annual Christmas/New Year draw. With huge expenses in the affiliation and entry of competitions at the beginning of each year the profits from the draw goes to the payment of this large expense at the beginning of the year.

Each year your support is tremendous and the club again depend on your generosity. Tickets are priced at €10 and the following is the prize structure: Prizes are as follows: 1st prize – €1500, 2nd prize – €750, 3rd prize €500, 4th prize €200, 5th prize €200, 6th prize €200, 7th prize €100 and 8th prize €100. The draw will take place at the Dinner Dance on Saturday 23rd January.

Rathcline Ladies Say Thank You

Rathcline Ladies GAA club would like to extend a sincere thank you to their sponsors, players, managers, selectors, supporters and everyone that helped the committee in any way over the 2015 year. All your fine work and support is greatly appreciated by those running the club and the committee of 2016 is looking forward to your continued support.

The club successes the past year was confined to the U12 girls who won their U12 championship and the Summer League. Both victories were historic for the club as it was the first time that each completion was won by the club.

The club would like to thank everyone that continues to support their ongoing clothes collection throughout the year.

The club would like to wish the new County Senior Ladies team management the very best of luck in the coming year.

The club looks forward to encourage new ladies to take up football during the year creating a bigger and stronger club. The club executive looks forward to your support in the year ahead and would like to wish everyone a very prosperous and happy New Year.

Fireside Tales

The very popular annual Fireside Tales is once again on bookshelves and it is a wonderful read of stories and the ways of life in bygone days. There is a lovely feature of the times of Bord na Mona in the area. The book is a beautiful read and well worth whiling away some evenings in front of the fire.

Rathcline GAA

Dinner Dance – To celebrate the success of 2015 the club will be holding a dinner dance in the Radisson Blu Athlone on Saturday 23rd January. The players will be presented with medals on the night and our two cups will be on show. Tickets are priced at €35 which will include the meal and music afterwards by the band 4Degrees West, followed by DJ Tommy K. A great occasion this promises to be for all parishioners. Tickets are available from executive members or from Joe O’Brien’s.

New Year’s Draw – Our New Year’s Draw will take place on Saturday 23rd January at the Rathcline Dinner Dance in the Radisson Blu hotel in Athlone. Prizes are as follows: 1st prize – €1500, 2nd prize – €750, 3rd prize €500, 4th prize €200, 5th prize €200, 6th prize €200, 7th prize €100 and 8th prize €100. Tickets cost €10 and are available now from executive members and other ticket sellers. With the move to senior football next year, the club will need even more income so it’s crucial again to make this draw a success.

50/50 Draw – Congratulations to Seamie Nolan, Newtowncashel, who was last Monday’s winner of €411 in our 50/50 draw. The draw takes place in the local pubs on a rotation basis on a Monday night at 9pm with this week’s draw on Monday 28th December taking place in Adie’s.

Yearly Subscription 50/50 – Our 50/50 draw which started a year ago has proved to be very successful. We have given away over €24,000 in prize money since the draw began. We are now giving people who live abroad or away from town the opportunity to be in with a chance of winning and supporting the club. A yearly subscription costing €100 will include membership for the year along with a chance of winning an average weekly prize of €400. The first date for the subscription envelopes to be rolled out will be Monday 11th January. Your support would be greatly appreciated. AGM – The Annual General Meeting of Rathcline GAA will take place on Sunday January 31st at 5pm in the clubhouse. We are hoping that there are people within the parish who would be willing to take on some positions within the executive.

New Year’s Wishes – The club would like to extend a happy and healthy new year to all our members and supporters at home and abroad. What a year 2015 has been for the club and a year which will go down in the history of Rathcline GAA.

Lanesboro Library

The Library will reopen on Monday 4th January at 2pm

Knitting & Crochet Group will resume on Monday 11th January 2-4pm.

ESOL Class will resume on Tuesday 12th January 7-9pm.

Lasraí Writers Group will hold their first meeting of the New Year on Monday 11th January 7-9pm. All welcome.

The Book Club will hold their first meeting of the New Year on Friday 29th January at 11am. The book for discussion will be ‘Foolish Pride’ by Anne Skelly.

Foreign Currency Appeal Reminder: The library staff are still collecting unwanted foreign currency and old coins/notes in aid of ISPCC. The smallest donation can make a huge difference.

Used stamps also being collected at the library for ISPCC.
