Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes Monday 9th May 2016

Lanesboro Ballyleague

Be a Part

Come along and be a part in the ever increasing excitement of the Lough Ree Monster 2017 Festival by joining the group at their meeting in Adie’s on this Wednesday night 11th May at 9pm.

Language of the Mute this week

The play is a strong and commanding portrayal of how unscrupulous people use their charm to shatter lives. It is hugely powerful play and it is one that must not be missed under any circumstances. Language of the Mute is a powerful debut play written by Jack Harte and most definitely one not to be missed. Be prepared to be moved, this is a compelling play. This multi-layered drama takes the audience on an emotional roller-coaster where secrets are revealed and sacred cows held up to scrutiny; where young love is re-kindled and idealism endures.

Language of the Mute will be performed in the Backstage Theatre this Thursday night at 8pm in the Backstage Theatre, Longford at 8pm and on Friday night it will be performed in the Roscommon Arts Centre at 8pm.

This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone local to go along and celebrate one of our finest writers ever to leave Lanesboro and to welcome him back with his play.

The play will take place in the Backstage theatre Longford on Thursday 12th May at 8pm. Booking can be made at the theatre or by phoning Longford 043-3347888 or Roscommon 09066 25824.

Tickets are priced at €16 and a concession of €14 for senior students and students.

Huge Festival Support

Even with the Lough Ree Monster Festival 2017 being over 15 months away it is amazing the amount of support that is being received. From far and wide there has been offers of help, ideas and support continue to pour in and the committee are deeply indebted to everyone that took the time to contact me (joea@iol.ie)  with their offerings.

Preparations for the Lough Ree 2017 Monster Festival are well and truly underway. There will be some really exciting events and the prospect of a debut play centred around Lough Ree and its Monster will be another highlight.

We now have commissioned the building of the Monster and we have provisionally booked some huge acts for the festival taking place during August Bank Holiday weekend 2017.

We are beginning our activities by staging a Céilí with local band Rise the Dust providing the music in Lanesboro Parish Hall on Sunday 5th June from 4pm to 7pm followed by a sponsored Monster Greyhound Night on Friday 17th June.

Tickets for the Greyhound night cost €10 and we hope you will all come along and have another wonderful night at Longford Greyhound Track

Birth

Congratulations to Gavin and Suzanne Greally, Cashelbeg, on the birth last weekend of a baby girl.

50/50

The Rathcline 50/50 draw took place in Adie’s on Monday night 2nd May for a sum on €413. Local Gurteengar man Brendan O’Sullivan was the lucky winner of the prize.

The club would like to thank everyone for their support and encourage those not already playing to put their €2 in the blue envelope sold throughout the community. The aim is to have the weekly prize reach a constant €500 or more each week. This can be done with your help.

Monster Night at the Dogs

The race night of the year will take place at Longford Greyhound Track on Friday night 17th June when the Lough Ree Monster Festival group will host a Monster Night Out at the Dogs. This is a date that all the communities of Lanesboro and Ballyleague and the parishes of Rathcline and Kilgefin should mark in their diaries and calendars. The group have great plans for the festival and the Night at the Dogs is to ensure that enough money can be gathered to pay the deposits for the incredible line-up proposed for the festival and also the funding can be obtained for the building of the Monster. Your support and the support of the entire community and their families will ensure that the Monster will sail up the Shannon from Lough Ree for the festival.

By purchasing your €10 ticket you are ensuring yourself of a wonderful night out and even if you do not go you are making your contribution to the Festival. Let’s make it the best night ever at the dogs and support our very own Monster Festival.

New Government Minister

There was great excitement on the western side of the bridge at the announcement on Friday last of Denis Naughten as Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources. We are sure that Denis will do a great job for his constituency and even for those of us outside of his constituency. I know he is involved in some local proposals and hopefully those proposals will come to fruition. We wish Denis and his team the very best of luck in the new Government.

Search for old Photographs and Programmes

Over the years there has been memorable plays, dramas, pageants and musicals in Lanesboro. There is a move to collate all old photographs, programmes, paper cuttings and other memorabilia that may be in the hands of those that had involvement in them. If you have some or you know someone that has any of the items sought can you contact Joe O’Brien 043-3321107, joea@iol.ie or 086-2460840.

Ballyleague Litter Pick

Recently Ballyleague Tidy towns committee indicated that we were planning a litter pick on the road between Ballyleague and Cloontuskert jointly with our colleagues in Cloontuskert Residents and Tidy Towns committee.

We plan to do this on Wed evening next, from about 6.30 or 7 o’clock PG, unless circumstances change. (Please check our Facebook page!)

What can you do to help?

If you live along that road, (or even if you don’t but would like to help out anyway!)

Perhaps you will do a litter pick outside your house/property! We will collect this litter as we drive up and down the road.

If you can help out. We have to point out that each person is required to

  • Wear a Hi-Vis vest.
  • Use a picker (if you have one).
  • Definitely wear gloves!

We hope to have at couple of cars/personnel monitoring and controlling traffic, but we will be working along a public road. We cannot encourage children along on this particular litter pick!

Recruiting

The Longford VTOS programme is now recruiting. It offers full time business and

We thank everyone who provided a spot prize, came along to the quiz or contributed in ANY way…. special thanks to Eamon Bolger and his team who provided the questions and the challenge at all times!!!! …roll on next Winter!!!!!

The club would like to thank everyone that took part in the Club Mass on Saturday night last. Again, it was a tremendous occasion.

Our Reserve League team had no game last weekend and they will entertain Ballymahon in Clonbonny on Saturday evening next at 7pm.

The attendance at the club function in the Parish Hall was very disappointing despite one of the best young band in the country playing there. Thank you to everyone that did turn up and support Brave Giant and the club.

Our Minors will play Clonbroney/Wolfe Tones in Ballinalee on Tuesday evening and our U16 team will play the same opposition in Dunbeggan in the league semi-final on Thursday at 7.30.
