Fr. John to leave us for new Parish
Word has come out over the past week of the imminent departure of Parish Priest of Ballyleague and the Kilgefin parish of Fr. John Mc Manus. He will move to Castlerea parish at the end of July and their gain is most definitely our loss.
In his short three years in our community Fr. John leaves an indelible mark and he will be remembered for a long time to come. The instant warmth and friendliness felt when you first meet him make you feel as if you were lifetime friends.
Fr. John was a marvelous pastor to his parish community, to the development of his parish, to the schools and to those who reached for help at all times.
Fr. John has a real passion for sport particularly the GAA games of Football and Hurling, his beloved Rossies, Glasgow Celtic and many other sport and he is willing to converse and argue any point in support of his team
His departure will leave the parish much poorer and the shoes that that are left to be filled will be large ones.
While it is too early to say goodbye I write this piece as an acknowledgement to Fr. John and the depth of feeling that is for him from both communities in Ballyleague and Lanesboro.
International Fishing Competition
As I write, Saturday evening, the first of the three days of the International fishing has just reached completion.
The day opened bright and warm the glorious conditions carried through all day long. The newly appointed Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Denis Naughten along with the newly crowned Longford Rose Caroline Doyle performed the official opening of the International Fishing competition.
The fishing was taking place in two locations Lanesboro and Strokestown, the newly developed Kilnacarrow fishing area was not used as at the moment fishing was not good in the area.
Leading the way after great days fishing with a 23k catch was Andrew Burnett. The fishing in Strokestown was not great on the day but by contrast the fishing in Lanesboro was very good with some very good catches.
It was a tremendous sight to once again see the river bank lined with fishermen of international standard. It brought back many memories to those of us who remember when the banks used to be lined from early morning with fishermen mainly from England. To the younger generation it was a memorable sight, seeing the talented fishermen at their work and catching lots of fish.
With fishing being so good and the catches so plentiful there is hope that many of those fishermen will make return visits to Lanesboro and bring their angling friends with them.

Lough Ree Golfing Society
The society enjoyed a wonderful day’s golf at the exquisite Castle Barna Golf Course in Daingean, Co Offaly on Wednesday last the 1st of June. The weather was magnificent, the course was challenging and some very good golf was played. The staff of Castle Barna were very welcoming and this contributed to the enjoyment of all.
The first prize was won by John James O’Shea with a very good score of 37 stableford points off a handicap of 16. Second, off a handicap of 24, went to Sean Brennan who scored 36 points. The third prize went to John Martin, with a very good score of 33 points, off a handicap of 15.
The front nine was won by Peter Day with 14 points, on countback, and Harry O’Donnell won the back nine with 15 points. The ladies prize went to Eileen Lyons on 24 points and nearest the pin on the par 3 ninth went to John Martin.
Many who played would like to return to engage again with this lovely challenging course.
The next outing is to the lovely Portumna, woodland course, in South Galway on Wednesday 13 July, 11.30 to 12.30.
A big crowd is expected; so book you tee time by texting Frank at 0879730611. New members and visitors always welcome. Music in Clarke’s bar Lanesborough afterwards from 10.30 where you can listen to exquisite traditional music and mull over all those good shots!
Fabulous Weekend
When the sun shines and even it does not there is only place you can ever be and that is in Lanesboro and Ballyleague enjoying the hospitality and friendliness. The fact that we have accommodation in the town is now a wonderful thing. It offers people the opportunity to spend more time here and take in everything that is impossible to do in just one day.
Last weekend, June Bank Holiday, for the first time in a long time it was marvellous to see the twin towns being very busy with so many people visiting and staying locally. The attraction of the International Fishing competition as well as the wonderful weather brought people out in droves. It was great to see so many faces of former residents and their families back in the town throughout the weekend, it is always great to catch up and see how they have progressed in life and are now introducing their own to Lanesboro and Ballyeague.
There was great comment amongst locals and strangers alike about how well both sides of the bridge were looking – we say a big thank you to Lanesboro and Ballyleague Tidy Towns committees for creating environments of beauty. Locals must also be commended for their warmth of welcome and their ability to take time with people on the streets and to make them feel part of our wonderful community.
We can be whatever we want to be especially with the pride our local people have in their community. It is lovely to hear people comment about our community and I would like to say a very big thank you to each and every one of you – you may not realise it but your friendly greeting and willingness to chat and answer questions is much respected by those visiting our community.
Yes, there is only one place to be and that is in Lanesboro and Ballyleague.
Lanesboro Bridge Club
The results of the end of season competition for Lanesboro Bridge Club that was held on the 18th May are: North / South, 1st Una Clarke & Eileen Kelly, 2nd Mary Mc Gushin & Kathleen Kelly and 3rd Philomena Walsh & Katherine Harrison. East / West, 1st Una Lawlor & Brid McDermott, 2nd Noreen Dunne & Mae Casey and 3rd Gemma Douglas & Maura Hanly.
Lanesboro Bridge club resumes on Wednesday 14th September.
Black Spot
If we are to continue to progress and proceed as mentioned earlier there is one irritation that continues to draw us back to the dark ages.
When the Dankse Bank left Lanesboro it left a huge void in the community. In fact, it almost tore the business heart out of our community. But for our steadfastness in working to maintain our community it could have been the death knell.
We worked hard and as a pacifier we were offered an ATM that was said to create the ability to have money readily available at the insertion of your card. While this was welcome and was laudable, the reliability of the said ATM leaves a lot to be desired and none more so than this past weekend with so many people in town and the only means of withdrawing money not working. It is a crying shame that this should be an ongoing problem for our community and also for the many and growing number of visitors that visit Lanesboro and Ballyleague each year.
An urgent plea is being made to Bank providers to again look at Lanesboro Ballyleague as a business town and if that is not seen feasible then install ATM machines – yes plural – that will work, continue to work and be furnished with enough money for the growing demand in our growing community.
Go Racing with Rathcline
With the famous Galway Races only a matter of a few weeks away it is time to start preparing for the Rathcline club’s Annual Day at the races. The package for the day at the races is marvellous and it is a fabulous way to entertain family and friends. It is a great opportunity to avail of the summer weather and to dress up for the occasion.
Rathcline will go racing on the opening day of the famous Galway Races, Monday 25th July with the first race commencing in and around 5pm.
The Galway Races brings a great excitement and the club offers you the opportunity to be part of that excitement in the company of locals.
All in all, this is a very special day out all for the cost of €110 and for your money you will receive free admission as well as a race card, free parking, a seating and viewing area located in the new Killanin stand overlooking the finishing line with spectacular views, there will be tipsters in the Pavilion, tote facilities, a beautiful 4 course meal, €5 drink voucher, there will be an opportunity to be declared the Best Dressed Lady and there will be after meal entertainment.

Monsters says Thank You
The Lough Ree Monster Group would lie to thanks Fr. Mickie Reilly attending and blessing the boats on Wednesday evening last at the harbour. The group would like to thank the Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club for their attendance. Following the Blessing the Sub Aqua Club brought a number of the large spectators out on the lake on their boats. There was great excitement amongst the assembled number at the offer and a greater glow and glee from them on their return from this trip. The Lough Ree Monster Group are deeply indebted to the Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club for their act of kindness and again thank them from everyone who enjoyed their trip so much.
Exam Time
It is the time for the leaving and Junior Cert exams with both commencing this Wednesday. I would like on behalf of everyone to wish each and every student the very best of luck and come August and September it will be all smile with excellent results.
Tax Relief Scheme

Going to the Killoe/Rathcline Leader Cup game in Clonbonny proved to be quite profitable for Pat Quinn, Bawn, Drumlish when he became the latest winner of the Rathcline 50/50 draw that took place on Monday night last in The Yacht bar. Pat was the recipient of €352 and we say congratulation to him and thank him for his support.

Our Dog night nearly here
The sponsored Lough Ree Monster Greyhound night is nearly up us, Friday 17th June at Longford Greyhound Track we hope that a huge number from the parish will come along and join us for is traditionally a fantastic community night.
We are holding this night to raise funds for the Lough Ree Monster Festival which is being held in the name of the communities of Lanesboro, Ballyleague and Newtowncashel. We intend to do you proud with a most magnificent festival

Honda 50 Run on Sunday
On Sunday morning next 12th June the car park area will be filled with Honda 50’s for the annual Around the Lake Run. Registration will take place in Lanesboro Parish Hall from 10.30am to 12.15pm. and during this time you can see all the Honda 50’s of old all done up and splendid looking. The trip is a 50-mile trip around Lough Ree. There is a no helmet no run policy. Refreshments will be available in the Parish Hall before and after the run. Contact Jimmy Clancy 087-2289468.
Draw
There is a draw organised in conjunction with the Honda 50 Run and the winning names will be drawn following the run. Tickets, priced €2, are on sale locally and your support will be appreciated.

Environment Awareness Day
A great opportunity for anyone interested in the environment. On the 27th August with Bord na Mona and local community groups we will be holding an environmental awareness event in Corlea, Co Longford. This community event is for everyone with an interest in the environment around us. The event will focus on recording all biodiversity (birds, mammals, plants, mosses and invertebrates) in Corlea and will focus on habitats such as cutaway bog, intact raised bog and scrub.
During the day events such as a bird talk, bat walk, moth trapping along with general biodiversity walks will be organised. All events will be free of charge and will be available to everyone, young and old. A timetable of events will be available soon.
If you or your group would be interested in helping run one of the events on the day, please let me know and we can work together on a schedule of events. Further Education Courses
Longford College of Further Education is providing courses in its new campus in the old army barracks in the Centre of Longford Town. It is a PLC provider of Longford and Westmeath ETB with all awards accredited by the QQI national framework of qualifications. Courses have links for progression to third level institutions where relevant. Enrolment is now open for QQI level 5 and 6 courses beginning September 2016. New courses include Level 5 Tourism with Business, Level 5 Film and TV Production and Level 6 Software Development. Ballymahon Friends of Crumlin
5k run/walk/crawl on Saturday 11th June in Ballymahon in aid of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin. Registration at 11 am at Nally’s Spar with the run commencing at 12 sharp. No entry fee but all donations gratefully received for this great cause.

Lough Ree Athletic Club
The secret is out! Both County Longford and County Roscommon held their Community Games in Ballymahon and Ballyleague respectively on Sunday in glorious sunshine. Compliments to both GAA clubs for putting their fine facilities at the disposal of the Community Games Committees.
First things first, the All-Ireland Schools Athletic Championships were held in Tullamore on Saturday and club athletes Conor Rohan and Ryan Murray both had fine performances finishing in sixth position in the discus event at Intermediate and Senior level respectively Conor will probably earn selection on the Connaught Squad for the Schools Tailteann Games which is a trial for an international team.
Congratulations to all the Lanesboro Community Games competitors on their fine performances on Sunday in Ballymahon. Full results not available but will be probably be published elsewhere in the paper. Suffice to say lots of great competition, lots of medals and lots of fun had by all in the glorious sunshine. Compliments to the organisers for a very efficient job. Also let’s not forget the kind gesture of O’Hanlon’s Pharmacy Ballymahon for the provision of copious amounts of free sun cream samples on the day. Brownie points for the thought!
Rathcline GAA
You can still become a member of Rathcline GAA. For just €20 you can become a member of the club which will be an acknowledgement of support for your club.
The senior and minor club would like to wish all students doing the Leaving and Junior Cert exams the very best of luck.
On Sunday last our seniors travelled to Colmcille to play the hosts in Fr. Mc Gee Park. As is our plight this year, our players are too young and try as they may the physicality of other more established teams tells in the end. We, again, put up a creditable performance and we thank the players for their efforts. There is no doubt but the days of this year will soon be a distant memory such is the talent of our players, further physical development and experience will take us on an upward curve.
On Friday next in Clonbonny at 8.15pm our seniors will finish off their league campaign for a while as the senior intercounty programme will take over for the next few weeks. The seniors entertain Dromard in what will surely be a very intriguing game and we urge as many as possible to come along and support the team.

Each year the club has had a waiting list for seats at the day and to avoid being on the waiting list and disappointment you are advised to book your seats early.
