Change of Plans

As previously notified the Annual Horse Fair will NOT now take place on Saturday 18th March. It will now take place on Saturday 1st April at the new venue of Gill’s Field.

There can be none more scenic a venue than this field with views onto the bay area and in full view of Lough Ree.

It is now time to make your return plans to Lanesboro for that day as I am sure you will already have visited for the St. Patrick’s Day and the relaunch of the Heritage Barge by the scouts on Sunday 18th March at 2pm.

Relaunch of Heritage Barge

Our local scouts, 12th Roscommon Scout Troop, have a tremendous occasion coming up on Saturday 18th March when after three years of laborious work they will relaunch their Heritage Barge:113B-Fox.

After many years of working the Barrow line on the Grand Canal carrying mixed cargo and in later times it was used a maintenance boat on the Shannon until it was decommissioned a number of years ago, the owners Waterways Ireland rightly felt the barge had rightly done its duty. That was until the eagled eyed local scouts identified it as a barge that would be eminently use for their use. Following negotiations, the 12th Roscommon Scouts under licence agreement from Waterways Ireland the boat became the property of our local scouts. The barge having been idle for a number of years needed both restoration and adaption for the use for our scouts. Three long years of hard and dedicated work by a dedicated team of Scout Leaders at Hanley’s Marina has seen the barge fully restored and refurbished. The Heritage Barge 113B-Fox now sits proudly in the marina ready for its relaunch on Saturday 18th March at 2pm.

The 12th Roscommon scouts based in Lanesboro and Ballyleague was formed in 2004 and it now has over 100 active youth members and over 40 adult leaders. The 12th Roscommon scouts is a hugely successful group in our community and they must be commended for their unstinting dedication to the promotion and development of our youth.

St. Patrick’s Day Entries

Entry forms for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade are available in O’Brien’s, from Teresa Costello or Freda Connaughton and they can be returned to any of the above mentioned with the required entry fee. It is hoped that this year’s parade will be bigger and better than any that has gone before it.

The Quirky Quiz

What is the Quirky Quiz I hear you ask? It is a quiz that is so fun laden that you will have the night of your lifetime. It is a quiz that will have many varieties of questions and there, undoubtedly, will be a great number of quirky questions local, national, international and some out of this world. It is a night for everyone to take part in and it is a wonderful unique community night.

The Quirky Quiz was initially to be a single night similar to a table quiz but have created an exceptional and unique night where the Quirky Quiz will be taking place simultaneously in the four pubs in Lanesboro and Ballyleague, The Yacht Bar, Clarke’s Bar, Adie’s, and Rosie’s at the Lifebelt – there is a chance that a fifth venue will be added.

There will be one quiz master and it will be relayed in all locations. There will be prizes for the winners in each venue and an overall winning team and winning venue.

You select your team, your pub and we are up and running. There has never been anything like it and because of its uniqueness you will be part of a historic night in Lanesboro and Ballyleague and it will be a great opportunity to be part of history.

The questions will indeed be quirky and there will most definitely be a wonderful atmosphere and a great deal of craic on the night.

The date for the Quirky Quiz is set for Friday 21st April.

Irish Dancing Champion

In the past few weeks a group of young dancers from the Shannon Academy of Irish Dance based in Roscommon travelled to Orlando, Florida to take part in the North America Championship of Irish Dancing. Part of the travelling group were two young sisters from Lanesboro namely Rachael and Grace Donlon, daughters of Edward Donlon and Michelle Neilan, Church View.

Traveling to Orlando alone for young people is the trip of a lifetime with all the theme parks and visitor attractions in that area. It creates a great excitement to be travelling to such a magical place.

First and foremost, the dancing was the primary reason and it was great to learn that Grace was crowned North American Champion and Rachael was place in fourth place in her category. This was a wonderful achievement for the two girls as the competition was   massive as you can imagine. There was great jubilation amongst us all at the girl’s achievements and like their parents we are rightly proud of them.

On Monday night 26th February, the 50/50 draw took place in the Per Inn, Lisnacusha. The Rathcline 50/50 draw winner was Eugene Hester, Knock. The club thanks every one of you for your continued support and your support means that we have a healthy winning amount every week. If you have not yet taken part in the draw we would encourage you to do so and help boost the winning prizemoney and support the Rathcline club and who knows it may be you next week.

All those who helped with the bag pack, sponsorship of raffle prizes, bought tickets, sold tickets, played the card game. To the darts and pool teams of Rosie’s and Clarke’s. So many people that it is impossible to thank you all individually. Your support is greatly appreciated for this very worthwhile cause. The winner of the card drive was Johnny Hanley for the second year in a row. Well done Johnny. A presentation of the cheque for all money raised will be made to Mayo Roscommon hospice on Wednesday 12th April in Clarke’s bar at the traditional Irish music session. This is a fitting tribute to our good friend Anthony

Train in the use of a Defibrillator

Have you signed up for the new Defibrillator course that is about to take place very soon? In this day and age knowledge in the use of the Defibrillator is essential. As you can see throughout the area there are public access defibrillators (PAD) and it is very important that you are adept in the use of this vital lifesaving equipment.

Each club and organisation in this and surrounding parishes should have a number of people trained in this course.

There are people with the course completed and they need to do a refresher course as is included in the rules.

Please give your name and contact details in to Martina O’Brien at the Corner Shop or phone Martina at 3321107 or 086-3538934.

Defibrillator Training

It is essential that we have people competent in the use of the defibrillator at the club grounds at all times during games and training. We would encourage parents and supporters to register for the upcoming Defibrillator training course. As we all remember from a few seasons back the value of the defibrillator and someone with the knowledge of its use so it is important that we have people available in Clonbonny for all our games fully up to speed with its use. You completing in the training can be a matter of life and death hence the need to ask you to sign up. Register your name with Joe or Martina O’Brien
