Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes 14th September’09

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

National Rural Transport Day

The Rural Transport Day on Friday last was an outstanding success with great representation at the Lough Ree Co-op. It was especially pleasing to see the large turnout as the Rural Transport has proven to be a huge benefit to rural dwellers and a lifeline to those without transport. There is a tremendous urgency to ensure that this service is continued and allowed to grow- as it surely will. Great credit is due to Seamus Lee and his staff at LCRL who are co-ordinating the continued development of the Rural Transport Scheme and it is very important that the whole community embrace the scheme and help it grow and grow.

Rathcline Cemetery

The Rathcline Cemetery Collectors would like to thank most sincerely everybody for their very generous donations on 5th July. The committee is very grateful for the ongoing maintenance.

Lanesboro Drop In

Following the summer break the County Longford Youth Service Drop in is back in Lanesboro. This Drop In is for all young people of the area aged between 10 and 18 years and it is a vital and essential centre for all of our young people and their friends.

We are so tired of listening to young people saying that there is nothing to do in the area. Well, here is there opportunity to be part of a tremendous facility every Friday evening from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. There are so many activities to avail of and the young people can throw in their own ideas too. This Drop In is for and about our young people and it should be embraced and encouraged by the whole community.

Call into Lough Ree Co-Op Hall every Friday evening and enjoy the company of friends and make new friends while engaging in all the activities.

Set Dancing Classes

Set Dancing classes will recommence in St. Faithleach’s Clubhouse on Tuesday next 22nd September. Classes for beginners will be from 7pm to 8.30pm and for advanced from 8.30pm to 10.30pm. Set dancing is a great way to ease stress, get fit and have plenty of fun. Go along and enjoy yourself.

County Final

Last Sunday the Longford County Board incorporated their 125 years of the GAA into their County Final day. The day was probably one of the best that has come this year, brilliant sunshine and little to no breeze. When you entered the grounds you could not but be mightily impressed at the presentation of the grounds and especially the playing surface.

The minor games went along predictable lines with Killoe overcoming Drumlish a strong challenge from a very young Drumlish side in a very entertaining game.

The senior team did justice to the celebration of 125 years where both Clonguish and Dromard produce a scintillating game that kept the huge attendance on their toes right through to the very end. It was a fitting end to a wonderful game that it should finish in a draw and it is a must for every GAA person that they attend the replay and hopefully witness another display of all that is great about the game of gaelic football. The replay is set for Sunday week 27th September.

At half time of the senior game all the clubs were represented by young players from all underage clubs in the county and it was especially great that our own Shannon Gaels were very well represented and looked resplendent as they marched out onto the field on county final day. The thought ran through my head as I watched them enter the field that it would be wonderful to see our own parish players running on to the field on county final. Hopefully in the not too distant future that wish will come through for me and all the parish of Rathcline.

Birth

Congratulations to Basil and Amanda (Gray) Mitchell, Lehery on the recent birth of a baby girl.

Death

It was with a great sadness we learned of the death on Sunday last at the Midlands Regional Hospital, Tullamore of Mrs Annie Carberry, Rathcline. Nan as she was more commonly known was predeceased a few years back by her late husband Brian. For many years the family lived in Derryhaun from where they reared a loving and caring family. In later years Nan and her husband Brian moved back to her family homestead in Rathcline. She was a thorough lady and a lady that was always available to help anybody in need. Her cheery nature and pleasant manner endeared her to all that had the pleasure to know her. In recent times she had been in failing health and she bore her cross with a great dignity and strength characters that exemplifies the woman. Her remains were removed from the Midlands Regional Hospital mortuary on Monday last to St. Mary’s Church Lanesboro and following her funeral Mass her remains were laid to rest in Clonbonny cemetery. To her daughters Marie, Philomena, Kathleen, and Celine, sons Johnny, Brian and Pauric relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

U14 Our under 14 team ended their season prematurely last week when they were beaten in a thrilling semi final by Clonguish. This was the second disappointment this season to the same opposition and both times the game was thrilling and exciting and a credit to the young people of both teams and their mentors for their coaching skills. Good luck to Clonguish in the final.

Under 12 Our under 12 panel took part in the Blitz at the weekend and while not successful acquitted themselves excellently in the ‘A’ division.

Referee Course The club proposes to organise a referee’s course in the very near future. It is an ideal way for players and ex-players to remain involved within the GAA and have a great time as well. There are many doors that can open for those that wish to pursue refereeing to county level. In the past few years Longford has been represented at national level very successfully and it would be great to see one of our own club people in the not too distant future also gracing these fields on the biggest days on the GAA calendar.

Well Done The club would like to congratulate the senior club on their very successful Bingo held last weekend.
