Cycle Against Suicide

Friday last 28th April the Cycle against Suicide cyclists arrived at Lanesboro Community College where they were welcomed and given nourishment before heading off to Roscommon via Strokestown. Lanesboro Community College Principal Bernice Martin welcomed the cyclists who are bringing the message ‘it’s OK not to feel OK; and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help’ the welcoming party included Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Denis Naughton, TD and Eugene Murphy TD, Ciaran Mullooly and Joe Flaherty. CEO of the

The sight of the huge number of orange clad cyclists turning the corner from the Longford Road and heading up to Lanesboro Community College was mightily impressive.

Former RTÉ 2fm presenter Colm Hayes now acting CEO of Cycle Against Suicide was among the cyclists arriving in Lanesboro. They were feted as heroes bringing the Cycle Against Suicide message to the students at Lanesboro Community College and the surrounding areas.

Lanesboro Community College got wide acclaim for their welcome and presentation of food. All concerned must take a bow as the praise was loud and wholesome.

As they left Lanesboro and made their way out of town it was led by students and teachers from Lanesboro Community College. A feature of this part of the cycle was Lanesboro Community College teacher Leo Sweeney joining the cycle to join his brother Tommy who was on the cycle from the start.

The ‘Schools Go Orange’ campaign takes place in over 200 schools across Ireland. It’s like a no uniform day and the message is to promote positive mental health and to remind everyone that

“it’s OK not to feel OK; and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help”.

Memories of Days gone by

Saturday last brought back memories of days gone by when it was a pleasure to see the fishing banks lined with fishermen. I believe a fishing club from the Dublin region selected Lanesboro for their angling day out. They arrived by bus and it was throwback to olden days to see the banks lined with fishermen. From what I am told it was a great days fishing for all with the hot stretch giving up lots of fish to the fishermen.

We hope they had a great time in our community and we hope that their great experience will encourage many more to come and enjoys a day’s fishing in Lanesboro.
