Lanesboro Social Services Whist
Following the Christmas and New Year break the Lanesboro Social Services Whist Drive returns on Friday night next 2nd February in the Parish Hall at 8.30pm. As usual the committee depend on your generous support to help those within our community less fortunate than us. Their work is essential and vital. Your generous support makes it possible for all the work that they do from week to week.
The committee would like to sincerely thank everyone that made donations at the last Whist and throughout the Christmas time it was deeply appreciated.

Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the extended Lindsay, formerly Cloontuskert, on the unexpected death on Sunday 21st January of Seán Lindsay, Drumcondra Dublin. Tosh as he was more commonly known left an indelible mark with all of us that were lucky enough to have knew him as a friend – he was one of a kind. Tosh is survived by his wife Anne, son Shane, daughters Tara and Ashling, sisters Mary, Christina and Vera, brothers, James, Pat and Paul.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade
You won’t find it coming around. There is just one week left in January and then 6 more before the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place in Lanesboro and Ballyleague on Saturday 17th March. For clubs, associations, businesses, schools, community groups and individuals it is time to begin the planning and creating.
This year St. Patrick’s Day is falling at the weekend and we hope that it will be bigger, brighter and full of new novel and creative ideas. We have one of the very best of Parades around and there is an onus on us all to help create another fabulous day in Ballyleague and Lanesboro
In a break with tradition the winner of the overall winning will receive the first prize of €500.
As usual there will be the annual draw running in conjunction with the parade and we encourage everyone to support the draw.

Death
Far away in Buncrana, Co. Donegal a former resident of both Cloontuskert and Rathcline passed away following a long and hard battle with illness on Wednesday last 24th January. Danny O’Brien as was his wont fought a courageous battle for the past six years. Danny had a most wonderful attitude and his positivity shone right throughout his battle. He was one of the warmest and most positive people I have ever encountered. Danny taught in St. Mary’s Hall in Ballyleague at the time of the school there. He played with St. Faithleach’s during that time. He later taught in Lanesboro Vocational School and was a leading member of the Rathcline club. In the famous year of 1976 Danny was not only a selector with the first championship winning team but he was also sub goalkeeper. He will also be remembered as an excellent football coach. He was a founding member and vital cog in Boro Celtic and he was an excellent soccer player. His departure to Donegal back then was a great blow to the parish and Donegal was only to benefit at our loss and he left an indelible mark on his new community in and around Buncrana.
There was a tremendous sadness in both our communities when the news of his passing broke and everyone that spoke of Danny did so with great and happy memories.
We remember his wife Isabel, his children Diarmuid, Michael, Margaret, Shane, Danielle, Jennifer, Susan and Emmet, and his daughter Miriam who predeceased him over four years ago. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family and many friends.
Danny reposed at his home in Clonbeg, Buncrana on Thursday and Friday before being removed for his Funeral Mass in St. Marys Church, Cockhill on Saturday. Burial took place afterwards to the adjoining cemetery.

Many congratulations to Alexander Mc Dermott son of Mary and the late Alex Mc Dermott, Lisnacusha and Jane Halloran daughter of Kathleen and Walter Halloran, Westport, Co. Mayo on the announcement of their recent engagement.
Lanesboro Community Games
The Lanesboro Community Games Art, Model Making and Handwriting competitions took place in St. Marys Parish Hall on Saturday last 27th January.
The standard was very high, and it was particularly hard to select the medal winners. Many thanks to Marie English for judging. Well done to all the young artists who took part.

Death
The death took place at Costello’s Nursing Home Ballyleague on Saturday 20th January of Kathleen Casey, Mahoraveen. Kathleen, a single lady lived her life in Mahoraveen until she moved to Longford Town was predeceased by her father Martin, mother Anne and brother Joseph. Kathleen used her bicycle as her mode of transport when in Mahoraveen and her warmth of greeting was legendary. She was a lady who worked hard throughout her life. She always had a cheery disposition and was well considered by young and old alike. Her passing leaves a void in the minds of all that knew her.
Her remains reposed at Farrell’s Funeral Home on Monday before her removal to St. Mary’s Church. Following her Funeral Mass Kathleen was laid to rest in Clonbonny Cemetery. To her sister Mary Tess, cousins, relatives and friends we extend our deepest sympathy.
Dolmen Drama Group
Dolmen Drama Group are busy putting finishing touches to their production of “See the Light of Day” a three act play written and produced by Newtowncashel man Liam Finnegan.
The group recently formed but members have up to 30 years’ experience in Amateur Drama in County Longford.
The Play which is not suitable for audience under 16 is set in the Ireland of the 1930’s and 1970’s, an Ireland totally different to our modern society. We visit the McGarry household, a small farm family struggling to make a living and their interaction with their neighbours. Witness the plight of women in society back then and the control of the Church in their everyday life.
An incident takes place which has consequences for all, we see the fallout from that, and how they wrestle with their conscience, will they do the right thing, or will their strong religious beliefs win out.

Coffee Morning
A Fundraising Coffee Morning and cake sale will take place on Sunday February 11th in the Thomas Ashe Hall Ballinalee to raise funds towards the purchase of a MRI Scanner for the Regional Hospital in Mullingar. The event will take place between 12 noon and 2.00pm with loads of homemade cakes and treats for sale. Raffle on the day with prizes galore. If you cannot attend but still wish to support, there are cards in all the local business where you can make a donation to this worthy cause.

On Monday night 22nd January the 50/50 pool stood at €300 and the winning envelope drawn in the Adie’s Bar was in the name of Ann Kenny, Newtowncashel.
Tickets are on sale locally at €2 each. Alternatively, you can by the pink ticket for the year for just €100 and have 2 free weeks. The club would like to thank everyone that continues to support the draw on a weekly basis and also the many people that buy the one-year ticket.
Not too long ago the pool each week was nearing €500 and we would encourage you to get your weekly blue envelope and help drive the weekly amount back to where it should always be.

Death
The area was saddened to learn of the death on Thursday last 25th January at Innis Ree Lodge Nursing Home, Ballyleague of Mrs. Maureen McAteer, Strokestown Road. Maureen was predeceased by her husband Brian. She was a lady short in stature but huge in heart. Maureen was a very pleasant and warm-hearted lady. Her personality was huge as those that knew her can attest to. Maureen has a wonderfully disarming smile. She was a wonderful neighbour ad friend. She was a devoted family lady. Her passing empties the heart of everyone that had the pleasure to know her. Her remains reposed at Smyth’s Funeral Home Roscommon on Friday and on Saturday she was removed to the Church of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Ballyleague for the Mass of the Resurrection. Following Mass, her remains were laid to rest in Cloontuskert Cemetery. To her daughter Catherine, sons Denis and Donal, sister Kathleen (Sr Camillus), relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Tourism Co-Op Draw
The numbers drawn in the Lanesboro Tidy Towns lotto draw held on Tuesday 16th January were 11, 21, 22 and 25. There was no winner of the jackpot of €10,300. The winner of the €50 prize was Catherine Hannon, and the three €20 winners were Claire and Chloe Kenny, Church View, Francis and Eithne Clyne, Lanesboro and Cathy Donlon, Church view.
Ronan Mc Cormack Memorial 2018
The Ronan McCormack Charity Challenge 2018 was launched recently.
We are now on the cusp of the 6th annual challenge and even at this early stage the interest and anticipation is overwhelming. The 2018 event takes place on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd March. As is usual the challenge kicks off with a choice of a 5k or 10k moonlight run on Friday March 2nd. The following morning it will be the turn of the cycle challengers who will take part in either a 65 or 125km route. The eagerly anticipated darts competition takes place on the evening of Saturday 3rd in Foxes Bar, Athlone Road Roscommon.
This event is organised to remember Ronan, a wonderful young Roscommon man who left this world at the very young age of just 26 years. Ronan was a kind fun loving young man who always was eager to help anyone with his friendly smile and caring attitude. Ever practical, Ronan would be thrilled to know that in his memory to date 131,915 (one hundred and thirty-one thousand, nine hundred and fifteen euro) has so far been raised for charitable organisations.
The charities for 2018 will be Roscommon Special Olympics, Children’s Special Needs Services Galway and Pieta House West. Online registration is up and running.
The twice weekly training for walkers/joggers/runners continues each Tuesday and Thursday. Cycle training continues on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 9.30am. All training session start from The Quad Centre Roscommon Town. Training is open to everyone from the complete beginner to the experienced runner or cyclist. AGM
The club will hold its AGM on Saturday 17th February in the clubhouse at 6pm. The club had a very good year culminating with a wonderful victory in the Intermediate Championship. Off the field the club had a good year also. To help continue the success of 2017 and create a growth in 2018 the club would like to encourage anyone that has an interest in the development of the club both on and off the field to come along to the AGM. The club is looking forward to seeing a great number at the meeting.

Death: The Rathcline club would like to extend its deepest sympathy to the O’Brien family, Clonbeg, Buncrana on the death of Danny O’Brien. Danny was a prominent member of our club during the historic victory of the club’s one and only Senior Championship. Danny was not only as selector with that team, but he was also the sub goalie. Danny gave the club a huge amount of his time during his stay on the Rathcline Road. He also was an excellent coach to our underage teams and to Lanesboro Vocational School where he was a teacher. Danny was full of positivity and was always encouraging and developing a great sense of well being amongst pupils and players. Danny was predeceased by his daughter Miriam. The entre club would like to extend its deepest sympathy to his wife Isabel, his children Diarmuid, Michael, Margaret, Shane, Danielle, Jennifer, Susan and Emmet and we share with them in their sadness.

U13 and U15 Cross County Leagues: Western Gaels will compete again this year in the Leinster U13 and U15 Cross County Leagues. On Saturday next our U13’s are away to St. Rynagh’s Offaly while the U15’s are away to Confey Kildare in Leixlip.
