Lough Ree Athletic Club

Claremorris track, on Saturday last was the venue for the Connaught under 9-13 Athletic Championship.  On arriving the first thing to impress us was the crowds in attendance for this event. There is no doubt that Mr Ring when Minister for Sport in the last government did not forget his native county for the fine facilities. We had 5 athletes who qualified from County Roscommon Championships and they did us proud!  In the boys under 9 300m race, Oisin Dillon and Daragh Donlon finished in 7th position from a field of 15 teams.  The same team also finished in 9th position overall in the 60m with Oisin clocking the 4th fastest time on the day for the shorter distance. Not to be outdone our girls under 10 team of Emma Feeney and Mariana Donlon Concalvez were 4th overall in the 500m from a field of 17 teams, just missing out on medals and qualification for the All-Ireland.  The same team was 8th overall in the 60m sprints.  Our sole competitor in the individual events was Christian Donlon Concalvez in the under 12 age group.  Christian was fourth in the 80m (on limited training) and has qualified for the All Ireland on July 1st. The under 14 and upwards age group takes place next Saturday at the same venue and we wish Conor Rohan the best of luck in the boys under 19 discus.

Siamsa

An Irish Language Summer Course (SIAMSA!) will take place from Monday 9th July to Friday 13th July in Gaelscoil Longfoirt.  The course will take place from 9.30am to 3.00pm each day and will cater for students from First Class to Sixth Class.  Further information and applications forms available by contacting 087-2642665.

Rathcline GAA

Good Luck: We would like to wish the Murtagh brothers Ciaran and Diarmuid the very best of luck in the Connacht Final on Sunday next in Hyde Park.

Galway Races: The club has confirmed the club’s annual Race Day for Monday 30th July. This is a jewel in the club’s activities each year with the day being very special for all. With limited places available the club would advise early booking for this magnificent day. Tickets cost €120 per person and it is real value for money for all you receive on the day

Croke Park on Sunday last: The first thing noticeable and a very reason to be proud was to see three club players listed on the panel for the Leinster semi-final against Dublin – Liam Connerton, Shane Donohoe and Shane Kenny.

It was unfortunate that we came up against the best team in Ireland over the past few years, but it was great to seek a spirited performance and a never say die attitude. We wish them well in the qualifiers on Saturday week.

As I write the draw has just taken place for the qualifiers and Longford will play in Pearse Park against Kildare on the weekend 23rd/24th June
