Work Scheme is a tremendous success
The ‘work scheme’ initiative under the stewardship of Shannon Gaels Minor club is proving to be a tremendous success. The numbers of people each week seeking jobs to be done in and around their homes, farms or bogs continues to grow.
From a social point of view it is also proving to be a wonderful success where young boys and girls from the club are getting to know the older community and visa versa. It brings the whole community a lot closer together. The club are promoting jobs for their young players as their primary aim but the integration and familiarisation of young and old has brought the whole project to a far great sphere than was anticipated. Now that all age groups are getting to know each other the project is fast becoming a social and community marriage that is vital for our young and old alike.
Well done to everybody in the parish for their part in this scheme.

Triathlon
The first staging of a triathlon will take place on Saturday next. You are invited to come along and support the athletes taking part. PJ O’Neill is taking part in the triathlon and is doing it to raise funds for the Jack and Jill Foundation. You are asked to sponsor him by pledging money in O’Brien’s.
Tickets for Connaught and Leinster Finals
Tickets for the Connaught Final between Roscommon and Sligo will be on sale in O’Brien’s from this Wednesday. A limited number of tickets for the Leinster Final will also be on sale up to Friday. Leinster tickets must be booked as they will not be counter sale.
Church Gate Collection
Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, will be holding their Annual Church gate collection at all Masses next weekend. Your usual generous support will be much appreciated.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Maura and Sean Kenny and family, Fermoyle on the death last week of Maura’s mother Mrs. Mary B. Murphy, Moyne.
Shannon Gaels Minor Club News
The Lá na gClub and family day celebrations in Clonbonny on Sunday 27th June proved to be a terrific success. The weather while a little blustery remained good and it was wonderful to see so many people out taking advantage of the excellent weather we are experiencing. The club is deeply indebted to all the families in the parish for their continued support. It is a wonderful experience to have your full support and we would like to invite any family not yet integrated with the club to come along and bring their boys and girls to Clonbonny any Thursday night between 7pm to 8pm. A special word of thanks to the wonderful helpers that made the day so successful – your work is great appreciated.
Congratulations
The minor club is rightly proud of the achievements of the Longford Minor Football team and all roads now lead to Croke Park on Sunday next for the Leinster Final. We are particularly proud of Shane Donohoe and the leading part he is playing in the success of the team.
We wish Shane, his teammates, panel, management and Longford Minor Board the very best of luck in the final in Croke Park on Sunday.
The club would like to congratulate two of their former players who had the special honour of becoming All Ireland winners in Croke Park on Saturday last. Eoin and Ruairí Donnellan played leading roles in the Lory Maher All Ireland Hurling Final.
The club would like to congratulate former player Padraig Reilly on qualifying on Sunday last for the All Ireland Fleadh that will be held in Cavan later in the year.
The club would like to wish former player Martin Gillen every success as he travels to Italy next week for the World Clay Pigeon championships.
Home Blitz
The club host an under 8 blitz in Clonbonny on Wednesday evening and we hope that there will be a full turnout of players and their families and club supporters.
Sympathy
The club extends its deepest sympathy to Maura Kenny on the death last week of her mother. The club also extends its deepest sympathy to the Clancy family on the death on Thursday of Bart Clancy.
Community Games
Congratulation to all the children of the parish who took part in the County Community Games held recently in Ballymahon. There was a tremendous had a great result this year with eight 1st place children going to represent County Longford in the All Ireland Final from 20th to the 22nd August in Athlone. The results of the gold medals are as follows U10 100m Girls Orla Keane, U12 100m Girls Relay Sarah Farrell, Tanya Farrell, Niamh Chawke, Aisling Casey and Hannah Shea. U12 Long Puck Connell Kennelly and U14 Long Jump Kevin Sorohan.
The Silver medals were U14 Shot Putt Shannon Rooney and U16 100m Eoin Sorohan.
The Bronze medals as follows U14 Long Jump Anna Peters, U12 Ball Throw Aisling Casey, U12 100 Boys Relay Cillian Flood, Iarla O’Sullivan, Niall Keane and Owen Murray, U14 100m Laura Peters, U14 100m Mark Lyons, U14 Girls relay Anna Peters, Laura Peters, Shannon Rooney and Hayley Rooney, U14 Shot Putt Eugene Maguire U16 High Jump Aisling Brady.
Cemetery Sunday at Lanesboro graveyard
Sunday next sees the continuation of the family remembrance at our local cemeteries. Next Sunday 11th July it is the turn of Lanesboro cemetery where a remembrance Mass will commence at 6pm. It is expected that all families with graves in Lanesboro will have their family plot in good shape.
The following week 18th July the final Mass will take place in Clonbonny cemetery again at 6pm.
Brain Keenan to launch Summer School
The presence of Brian Keenan to officially launch this year’s Lough Ree Environmental Summer School is a major coup for the committee. Brian Keenan was captured and held hostage for over four years in Beirut by Islamic kidnappers. At the time of his kidnapping he was an English teacher at an American college in the city. The Arts Festival launches its 13th Summer School in the Lough Ree Development Co-op hall on this Thursday evening at 7.30pm and you are invited to come along and share in what will be a wonderful occasion. In conjunction with the opening of the Summer School the Arts Festival will also be launched on Thursday night with County Librarian Mary Carleton Reynolds who has become a tremendous influence in the exciting development of the library throughout the county over the past number of years. Mary exquisite influence is quite clear to be seen and this is an opportunity to come along and acknowledge her wonderful work. The launch is a joint venture with the Environmental Summer School and will also take place at 7.30pm.

Tremendous Week of achievements for Lanesboro/Ballyleague
The past weekend has been a remarkable weekend for Lanesboro and it is wonderful to be acknowledging local successes.
Saturday last Longford hurlers won the Lory Meagher title on the hallowed Croke Park turf. WE are proud to say the Both Eoin and Ruairí Donnellan sons of PJ and Joan Donnellan played leading roles in this tremendous victory.
Saturday saw the European Triathlon Championships namely the Tri-Athlone triathlon taking place in Athlone. In the veteran section we had Colm Daly not alone representing us and he was proudly wearing the Irish singlet he deservedly won when qualifying last year. Colm was the second Irishman home and in 6th position. This is a remarkable achievement for Colm and we heartily congratulate him. Colm will again be seen taking part in the first ever triathlon to be held in Lanesboro next weekend.
Sunday evening in Pearse Park saw the Longford minor team perform magnificently in the Leinster Minor semi final where they overturned overwhelming favourites Kildare to reach the Leinster final on Sunday next where they will meet Offaly in Croke Park. On the Longford team was Shane Donohoe son of Martin and Fiona Donohoe, Rathcline Road who represented the parish so well. We wish Shane every success on Sunday next and hope that he will return with a Leinster medal to the parish.
Off the sporting field we saw another remarkable performance from local man Padraig O’Reilly, Pádraig is well known on the traditional music circuit and last weekend saw his undoubted ability come to the fore when he qualified for the All Ireland Fleadh. Padraig is son of Terry and Ann O’Reilly, Rathcline and he will be representing us in the All Ireland Fleadh that this year will be held in Cavan town later in the year.
Martin Gillen son of Greg and Bernadette Gillen, The Green and his Irish teammates take part in the World Clay Pigeon Championships in Italy next week. We wish Martin and his teammate’s great success.
Stephen Ormsby son of Steve and Teresa Ormsby, Ballyglass, Martin Reynolds son of Ita and the late Brendan, Cloontuskert and Darragh Hussey, son of Pat and Dolores Hussey, Ballyleague have played a tremendous part in Roscommon’s march to the Connaught Final that will take place on Sunday week. We wish the lads and their teammates and management every success when they take on Sligo.
The achievements of the past weekend have been terrific and we are rightly proud.
Death
The entire area was severely shocked and saddened on Thursday last 1st July when the news broke of the sudden and untimely death of Bart Clancy Rathcline Road. Bart, a proud native of county Clare, came to Lanesboro as a teacher in what was then the Vocational School. After a short time he became Principal of the school and was part of the tremendous development of the school until his retirement. Bart was an affable man whose wonderful nature will last long in the memory of the vast number of people that were privileged to know him. His demeanour was that of a man who had the time of the world for everyone and he made everybody feel that they were the most important at that time. His traits were without doubt wonderful and he is a man that will be sadly missed by everybody that had the pleasure of his company. Bart was a tremendous friend and neighbour and since his retirement further developed his hobby of working with clocks of which he had no equal. The attendance at the reposing of his remains at his residence on the Rathcline Road, at his removal and again at his Funeral Mass and burial to Clonbonny cemetery was ample testimony to the esteem in which he was held. To his wife Bernadette, sons Peter and Michael, daughters Mary, Breda, Sheila and Ann, brothers, relatives and friends we extend our sincere and deepest sympathy.
Head Start Summer Fun Club
The Head start Summer Fun Club for 2½ to 8 year olds will be commencing in July and running for three weeks with the first week commencing on Monday 12th for 6-8 year olds, Monday 19th July for 4 to 6 year olds and Monday 26th July for 2½ to 4year olds.
Head Start Pre-School is also taking bookings for the FREE Pre-school year and for children of 2½ and upward. For more information contact Denise at 3321321 before 6pm any evening.
Dance, Music, Sport and Art Camp
A dance, music, sport and art summer camp will take place in St. Mary’s Parish Hall from Monday 12th to Friday 16th July each day from 10am to 2pm. Children can be dropped off from 9.30am at the Parish Hall. The dance part of the camp will consist of céilí, set, line, Irish, Scottish, hip-hop, flamenco, ballroom, tap and kinder dance. The music part will consist of tin whistle and recorder. The fee for the camp is €50 and reductions for families of three or more. VHI Cúl Camps
VHI Cúl camp is again back in Clonbonny this year and it again promises to be another wonderful experience for all the young boys and girls in the area.
Places are booking up fast especially the Nursery camp places and we are limiting places in the Nurseries to 40 places per venue so to avoid disappointment it is advised to book as soon as you can as there might not be any places available on the day. This program will run along similar lines to previous years and Longford will be holding both hurling and football camps throughout the county for the summer months. This year they will be promoting handball more actively within 5 of the camps where we have the facilities to accommodate us. Longford Coaching & Games will also be running a nursery camp for 4 – 6 year olds at each VHI GAA Cul Camp and these camps can be booked by completing and returning the Yellow application form. The date for the Clonbonny GAA Cul Camp is from 26th July to 30th inclusive and it is for all between the ages of 6 and 13yrs from 10-2.30 and the cost is €60 per child. Computer/Secretarial Course
Lanesboro Community College will offer a FETAC standard Computer/Secretarial course which will also include a Digital Photography Course commencing on 13th September in the college. The course will take place four mornings a week and if you wish to enrol for the course you are invited to call to the college or phone 043-3321139.

Lanesboro Ballyleague Credit Union next member’s car draw takes place on Friday next 9th July at 8.00p.m in the Credit Union office. 1st Prize VW Polo – 2nd Prize €2000.00 – 3rd Prize €500.00 – 4th Prize €300.00 – 5th Prize €200.00 and 10 x €100.00 prizes. The Summer Events at Lanesboro Branch Library are as follows: Wednesday 7th July Arts and Crafts Magic (Age 9 – 12). Join local artist Eimear Walsh in a magical arts and crafts session.

Pike Angling
Lanesboro Pike Angling club held a competition in Lanesboro on Sunday last 4th July. Eight boats took part in what were fairly blustery conditions. One fish weighing 3lbs 10oz was the biggest fish caught and the first prize winner was Louis Rhatigan. The remaining prizes were drawn at random. With conditions deteriorating the decision was taken at lunchtime to abandon the rest of the days fishing.

Lough Ree AC
Saturday last was the first day of the All Ireland competition for the under 12 to 17 age group and the venue was Tullamore Harriers sports Complex – the finest in the country.
Orla Duffy, Eoin Murray, and Larissa Noone having been successful in Connaught had qualified to compete at these National Finals. They did not get into the medals but the experience was invaluable, particularly as none of them were involved in throwing the Shot at the beginning of the year. Orla will be very pleased as she had a personal best on the day. They all now know that they have an event they can perform at a high level.
