Lough Ree Monster Festival
The Lough Ree Monster Festival will take place this year from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th August.
This year there is an added attraction of the Monster Jiving Champion. Jiving will take place on Sunday night with €300 in prizes. It promises to be a memorable night
The Festival will commence on with a special event organised by the local and county library for which we are very grateful and delighted to have them onboard. Coinciding with the Lough Ree Monster Festival, Lanesboro Library will host an evening of entertainment on Thursday 9th August at 7pm. We are very excited to welcome author Jack Harte back to his old stomping ground. Jack will read from his most recent publication Rehabilitating the Serpent. Also, on the night we will have some music and light refreshments.
This is a night not to be missed!
Friday evening 10th The events Lough Ree Monster Festival will commence with the Kiddies Disco in the Big Red Barn. At 9.30pm the Lough Ree Monster will emerge from Lough Ree to moor along the Shannon banks for the weekend. The late-night music will commence at 11pm with DJ Martin who will provide music for the 80’s Disco.
Saturday 11th We will welcome back the superstar of Irish and Country Music Mike Denver who will perform on stage from 11am to 1pm. Look out for other events during the day.
Sunday 12th We will have kiddie’s fun in the Big Red Barn in the afternoon. At 9.30pm we will have the departure of the Monster and his departure will be accompanied by a firework display. Sunday night dancing will finish our weekend with music by the Conquerors and the announcement of the Lough Ree Monster Jiving Champions.
The famous Murray Amusements will be onsite all weekend adding greatly to the atmosphere.
The entire weekend will take place in the Big Red Barn and the Barn is licenced to sell alcohol.
Annual Charity Swim
The Annual Charity Swim organised by the Lough Ree Triathlon club will take place on Monday 6th August in aid of the Roscommon/Mayo Hospice. The swim will star at 2pm and it will be over the Ironman swim distance of 3.9km. The swim will be from the Bord na Mona bridge at Kilnacarrow to the bridge in Lanesboro. Sponsorship cards are available from Niall Mulvihill phone 086 3179745 or a minimum donation of €30 on the day.
Lanesborough FREE Town Wi-Fi
Lanesborough is the very first town in the midlands to have free Town Wi-Fi. On Saturday last the official launch of Lanesborough as a free Wi-Fi Town was performed by Minister for Communications, Climate Action & Environment Denis Naughten. Kevin Boxer Moran, Longford County CEO Paddy Mahon , councillors and members of the Longford County Council staff and invited guest attended the launch.
The vision for the Wi-Fi town came from local councillor Mark Casey who seen this project as one to not only support locals but also the many tourists we have visiting our town over the year. Wi-Fi hotspots have been strategically placed throughout the town to give full coverage all along our Main Street (1km), local community areas, parks, Lough Ree Resource Centre and St. Mary’s Parish Hall.
An 8ft tall 55inch interactive digital signage screen is place outside St. Mary’s Parish Hall for all to use, showing What is on in town, local tourist attractions, cycle paths, woodland walks, Lough Ree, our world-famous angling areas and local notes.
Mark Casey said that “I would like that users would upload pictures, write reviews and generally comment across all Social Media options about their time spent in Lanesborough and the wonderful amenities we have here”. He continued by saying that “now with the free Town Wi-Fi this type of interaction is made even easier”.
Minister Naughten said that “this is a tremendous initiative and development for the community and the first step in a broader collaboration between Lanesboro and Ballyleague” He complimented Mark and the team behind him for the great work in seeing this initiative through.
Visitors, the local community and Tourists can download the TownApp – www.townapp.ie which promotes local businesses such as Restaurants, Accommodation, Public Houses, Hair salons, Butchers, Newsagents, Supermarkets etc. Free Town Wi-Fi for our overseas guests is another reason to visit our wonderful town, with soaring international data charges it is a reason to stop off and stay in our town, use our FREE Town Wi-Fi while you have something to eat and drink and take in our fabulous surroundings.
Lough Ree 2000 Bridge
The results of the competition held on Monday last 16th July are: N/S 1st J.J. Mass and Blessing of the Graves
On Sunday 12th August there will be Mass and Blessing of the Graves at 6pm in Cloontuskert Cemetery. The annual collection for maintenance of the graveyard will also take place.
Tennis Summer Camp
A Tennis Summer Camp will take place at the tennis courts in Ballyleague from Monday 30th July to Friday 3rd August. The camp will take place for 1 hour each afternoon. For further details contact Jim 083 1155374

Students
Strokestown Gold Club invites you to their club for a two-Day Golf Summer Camp on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th August.

Lough Ree Golfing Society
The fourth outing of 2018 to Dunmurry Springs Golf Club was very successful. The weather was not as good as it has been for the previous outings this year, this was probably reflected in the scores returned not been as good as previously. The course was quite challenging with the greens hard to judge, still members expressed their enjoyment of playing it.
The results from Dunmurry Springs are; 1st Mick Healy 33pts, 2nd Ronan Cullen 31pts and
3rd Martin McAllister 30pts.
The front nine was won by Jackie McDonnell and the back nine was won by Alan Farrell. The longest drive was won by Ronan Cullen and nearest pin was won by Alan Farrell.
The next outing is to Athenry Golf Club on Friday 17th August at 11.30am.
Rathcline Win
Well done to the Rathcline Intermediate team on their great victory over Kenagh in their second-round game. They have a bye next weekend before facing Grattan’s and Ballymore in their final two group games.
Lanesborough Gun Club
Membership subscriptions are now due for the coming season 2018/2019. Please contact a member of the committee to arrange payment. No follow up contact will be made to collect subscriptions, it is the personal responsibility of each member to ensure they are paid up and insured for the coming season.
Next Weekend
The Irish Wheelchair Association church gate collection will take place at all Masses in Lanesboro on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th July. With your support IWA can continue to maintain vital services to people with disabilities in County Longford.
€12,900 Tidy Towns
The Lanesboro Tidy Towns Lottery draw took place on Tuesday morning last. There was no winner of the €12,800 jackpot and the jackpot, for this week, will now rise to €12,900. The numbers drawn were 15, 22, 26 and 28. The winner of the €50 prize was Ger Heneghan c/o Clarke’s and the three €20 prizes winners were Mike Costello c/o Mags, Johnny Hanley, Corrigeen and Kathleen and Teresa Church View.

Summer Stars reading programme is running in Lanesboro Library from July 1st to August 31st. Each child who registers will join in the fun of reading lots of exciting books during the Summer. Children will receive their own Summer Stars Reading Card to record their progress and fun rewards will be provided along the way!

Healthcare Monitoring in Your Home
Shannonside Digital Skills are putting together a new plan for a pilot scheme in the Lanesborough Ballyleague area in the coming months.
The scheme will allow 20 people who suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure, COPD or other chronic illness to decide themselves to have their critical daily medical readings monitored by the use of new technology in the comfort of their own home through the use of broadband. These readings will then be monitored in conjunction with a specialised nurse service so that any healthcare readings of concern will be brought to the attention of the person immediately and action proposed.
This pilot project is now only at developmental stage. Participation will be purely on a voluntary basis for each person (10 from Ballyleague and 10 from Lanesborough) and each person who volunteers must firstly fill out a questionnaire and consult with their own GP.

Elizabeth Clyne, Corrigeen was the name on the winning ticket drawn for the Rathcline 50/50 on Monday night last. The winning envelope was worth €280. We would like to extend heartiest congratulations to Elizabeth on her great win and thank her and her family for their continued support of the 50/50

Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Mrs Nancy Kelly, Cloontuskert on the death of her son in law, her daughter Mary on the death of her husband John Francis Yorke and the extended Kelly family at this sad time for their family.
Blood Donation Clinic
If you missed the opportunity to donate blood in Longford at the Irish Blood Transfusion Service in the Longford Arms Hotel then you have the opportunity once again in the Abbey Hotel Roscommon on Tuesday 21st, Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd August.
Blood donations during holiday time decreases and it is very important that blood donations rise at this time of the year such is the increased demands for blood for so many reasons especially the amount of accidents that occour.
Back to School Allowances
If your child is aged between 4 and 17 on or before 30th September 2018, then you could be entitled to the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowances (BSCFA). If aged between 18 and 22, they must be returning to full-time second-level education in a recognised school or college in the autumn of 2018. The BSCFA is an important payment for people as it helps minimise the cost and takes the edge of what can be an expensive time for families. Uniforms and footwear are not cheap, which is why you should consider applying now.
Applications are now being taken and the closing date for applications is 30th September. A payment is automatically made to some customers who should have received their payments the week ending 13th July 2018. I you have not already received your payment you should contact your local Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection. Total household income limits apply, and these can be checked online.
An example of the qualifications criteria for the scheme is as follows: (1) Social Welfare payment (including Working Family Payment and Back to Work Family Dividend) or a Health Service Executive payment. (2) If you are taking part in an approved employment scheme (back to work scheme). (3) If you’re taking part in a recognised education or training course. (4) Involved in an Area Partnership Scheme. (5) If you’re attending a FET (formerly Fás) or Fáilte Ireland training course.

Calling All School Leavers and Back to Education – The Next Step
On 13th August 2018 in Longford Rugby from 4pm to 7pm I am holding an Information Evening for School Leavers/Back to Education/People with Learning Difficulties and Mature Part Time Students. The aim of the evening is to provide students and their parents with the necessary information they will need after receiving their Leaving Certificate results. This will be a one stop shop for questions and queries students have on grant applications, student loans, car loans, childcare options for back to education students, alternative options to 3rd level colleges and information on springboard courses, apprenticeships, coping strategies for adjusting to college and lots more. I am delighted to be able to announce that the Minister for Higher Education, Mary Mitchell O’Connor will be in attendance, along with other guest speakers who will be available the purpose of this evening is to ensure that students and their parents feel supported in the next phase of their lives. Championship:
Saturday evening last in Cashel seen our Intermediate team secure their second group win when they defeated Kenagh on a scoreline of 5-13 to 1-12. It may have turned out a handsome victory, but it was far from that. The half time scoreline was 1-8 to 1-7 in our favour and it looked as if there was a great fight on the cards. We score a couple of goals early into the second half which gave us some breathing space and we continued to finish strongly to the end.
Next weekend we have a bye in the Championship as we prepare for the final two group games against Grattan’s and Ballymore.
Get Well wishes: Both the senior and minor club would like to wish Cronan Flood well in his recover from the injury he suffered during the Intermediate Championship on Saturday last.

Monday next will see our club make their annual trip to the Galway races. Such is the popularity of the day that the day out has been book for a number of months.

U14 Girls Championship: The girls played Elphin in round two and were unfortunately beaten by a point. Next game takes place against St. Michael’s in Ballyleague on Sunday at 6pm.
Pedal Power Cinema: St Faithleach’s Minor Club fundraiser takes place in Ballyleague Hall on Friday 3rd at 7pm, this unique event will see teams of cyclists consisting of players, parents and supporters pedal in unison to power the film “Boss Baby”. The event promises to be a great evening’s entertainment for all the family and sponsor cards are available from all team managers. Your support is appreciated.
Condolences: The club would like to express its sympathy to Mary York and the Kelly family, Cloontuskert on the death of Mary’s husband John Francis York. May he rest in peace.
