Lanesboro – Ballyleague Notes

Shannon Gaels Minor Club

Saturday last in Hyde Park Roscommon was not a pleasant day for the Longford minor players, team management and supporters but at the same time it was a day of pride. Lest should we forget the Longford Minor footballers are Leinster Champions and although their campaign did come to end against a very highly rated Galway team in the All Ireland quarter final they did go down fighting with only one point between the teams after 60 hard fought minutes. As a club we congratulate each and every panel member and team management and county minor board for their tremendous work with these young players and hopefully lads that will drive the county seniors in time to come past their point of departure on Saturday.

We must give special mention to our own Shane Donohoe who performed so gallantly for the minors throughout their campaign and no better performance than on Saturday last. We now look forward to Shane taking a leading role with the club minor team in the forthcoming championship bringing the experience and fitness gained with the county to help the club minors strengthen to the extent that they will be challenging for county honours.

VHI Cúl Camp

Last week seen the VHI Cúl Camp take place on the club grounds in Clonbonny over five days. Although the attendances were not up to the high numbers of previous years it was nonetheless a wonderful camp for all the young players, boys and girls, from the club that took part. We would like to thank the players and their parents for their commitment and will to see better standard of football played in the club. We would like to thank the coaches for their excellent coaching and their duty of care shown to all the participants. We must mention our own club members that helped out with the camp Shane Kenny, Gary Gallagher, Dearbhail Flood, Laura Peters, Óisín O’Sullivan and Aoife Mc Gann who were tremendous throughout the week.

Road Works Coming to an End

The long awaited completion of the road works on Main Street appears to be coming to an end with the final stages of the new sewage scheme for Lanesboro Ballyleague almost finished it work on the Main Street. Not alone have they installed a new sewage scheme but during their dig they have installed new water mains and ESB ducting. Having witnessed at first hand the work and the disruption to the town businesses I must complement the workers of the Contractors Mc Grory and sub contractors Cosgrove for the hard work they put in so that the work could be finished with least disruption. It is not everyday that the quality of these workers come to town and they must be acknowledged for their competency and attention to detail. We must also acknowledge the work that Eugene Kelly put in ensuring that the work was done to the required standard.

New Home Bakery and Deli

We would like to congratulate James and Mary Casey and their family on the opening of a new Home Bakery and Deli in the premises that once house their butcher shop. It is a marvellous venture and a great fillip for the town to see this new business open last Friday. You can sit and have a coffee and scone and watch the world go by, you can buy freshly baked cakes, tarts and all sorts of nice savouries. You can have freshly made sandwiches, hot plate and rolls.

This is a great boost for the town and we wish the Casey family a hugely successful future in their new business venture.

Ballymahon Road Work

Recently work commenced on the widening of the main Ballymahon Road just past the Cnoc na Gaoithe housing estate. This new development will, when completed, will see a footpath from the Corner right out to Tullyvrane crossroads and will be a wonderful facility for all the local residents on the road and will also be a magnificent for all the avid walkers in the area. The main movers in this project are the local Lanesboro Tourism Co-Op and we must pay special compliment to them for the excellent work and foresight in making this dream a reality. The completion of this footpath will create a wonderful opportunity for the Co-Op to develop further ideas that are in the initial stages for the enhancement of the areas beauty and will make a fabulous entry in Lanesboro.
