Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes 22nd August’10

Lanesboro – Ballyleague Notes

Draw on this Saturday night

In recent times have you wandered into the club grounds at Clonbonny and seen the new Prunty pitch and the clubhouse? Following a great spring and summer the newly laid sward has had a wonderful growth and the pitch looks superb. The clubhouse indeed takes pride of place amongst clubhouses anywhere. It is a fabulous comment to the Rathcline club that they have provided such a facility for its members and visitors. All of this comes at a huge cost but it is a facility that we can be rightly proud of.

The help defray this huge cost the club is holding a Summer Fundraising Draw on this Saturday 28th August In Clarke’s Bar. The tickets are priced at €20 each and the prize schedule is 1st -€3000, 2nd €1,000, 3rd €750, 4th €500, 5th €250, 6th to 10th prize €200 each. I encourage everyone to make the special effort to support the draw and ensure there is a huge take up on the tickets and help continue the tremendous work already done and what is to be done in future weeks and months ahead.

Apology

Lanesboro Pike Angling Club would like to apologise for having to cancel our children`s competition at such short notice last Saturday. This was due to circumstances beyond our control. The competition will now be held next Saturday 28th August entries will be taken from 10am and fishing will be from 11am to 3pm. and will be open to all children boys and girls up to 14years old.

Congratulations to Orla Keane

As we all know the Community Games is a 32 county competition with the very best athletes and young sports enthusiasts competing to be the best in Ireland. It is not very often that we have the opportunity to see locals reach the Final of their discipline. Orla Keane on Saturday last did herself her family and the Rathcline Parish proud when she qualified for the final on Sunday. There was a great sense of excitement at Orla’s achievement and we hoped for great things in the final. In the final she finished and when we put her result into context we realise that Orla is the fifth fastest runner in her age group in Ireland and we are rightly proud of her magnificent efforts. During the early season Fabian Walsh had continuously noted the fine prospect the Orla was in the Lough Ree Athletic Club notes and it is great to see that his eye for athletic talent has not waned in any way. Well done to Orla and her proud parents Brendan and Susan Keane, Barnacor.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club

Glory Day for Shannon Gaels Under 16 team

Sunday last all roads led to Ballymahon for the Under 16 League final where the young bravehearts of the Shannon Gaels Minor Club took on the Cashel/Killashee amalgamation. Following the frustrations of the week where the Under 14 and minor teams departed their relative championships with narrow defeats this victory really raised the spirits of the club. This team are a dedicated bunch of lads who worked hard throughout the season, were unbeaten in the league and it was all down to the final game. Their enthusiasm of the season really paid off when they emerged victors with a six point margin and these young men must be richly commended for their tremendous dedication to training and matches throughout the season. There cannot be success without the support of a backroom team and we must also congratulate club coach Cian O’Brien, Dominick Mc Grath and Michael Murray for their work throughout the season.

Following their victory parade through the town they went to the clubhouse where there were royally feted. This was then followed by the customary victory treat of 99’s compliments of Martina and Joe O’Brien. Well done to everybody for a marvellous day.

Under 14’s Bow Out

Following a classic game in the semi final of the Under 14 championship last Friday night our young men feel short by one point to a very strong and highly fancied Colmcille side. This was a wonderful performance, right out of the top drawer, and these young players showed great potential and all going well these players will, like the victorious Under 16 team, stay together and work hard and will achieve just like the Under 16’s. Again the hard work was aided and abetted by a great backroom team of Micheál O’Sullivan and his management team who gave so much of their time with these young men. We must congratulate all on their hard work and dedication throughout the year.

Minors come up short

Our minor team were very unlucky in the championship last week when they were narrowly beaten (2pts) by a very strong Carrick Sarsfields side in Carrickedmond. They team played Carrick Sarsfields a few weeks ago and went under by a large amount. The lads reversed that defeat to a huge extent last week and were very unfortunate not to have emerged victors. The team was very well prepared by Declan Feeney, Kevin Chapman and a very astute backroom team. Their effort I am sure were not in vain as they seem to have created some very worthwhile talent to come into the senior club in the next few years.

Hard Luck to Seniors

The minor club would like commiserate with the senior team on their defeat by Abbeylara on Sunday last in Pearse Park.

The club would like to congratulate every one of the club representatives that were in action in the Community Games Finals in Athlone last weekend.

Mixed fortunes for Championship teams

Sunday last proved to be a day of mixed fortune for the St. Faithleach’s and Rathcline senior teams in the quarter finals of their respective championships. The day got off to a bright start with the St. Faithleach’s team travelled to play Roscommon Gaels in Tarmonbarry. St. Faithleach’s built on the victory of last week and after a tough game emerged victorious with a 6 point margin and now look forward to a semi final date in the coming weeks.

Rathcline were not as fortunate in their senior championship relay with Abbeylara where after a titanic struggle they went under by just 3points and two of them coming in injury time. They were close but it was not to be their day but we must recognise the great work done by the players and management and hopefully they will regroup for a strong run in the remaining Leader Cup games.

Triathlon News

The newly formed Lanesboro Triathlon club had their first club outing to nearby Portrun for the Sprint Triathlon hosted by the Athlone Triathlon club on Sunday last.

Brendan O’Sullivan, Michael Murray, Ronnie Johnston, Peter Clancy, P.J. O’Neill, Johnny Kilcoyne, Ronie Masterson, Mark Kenny, Niall O’Donoghue, Colin Daly and Joe Masterson. Stirling performances were put in by Joe Masterson who travelled directly from the Gaelforce Adventure Race that included going up and down Croagh Patrick in just over 4hrs and Niall O’Donoghue who had a storming race. Niall and Colin both represented Lanesboro the previous week in the Olympic distance race in Mullingar and did very well. All the athletes were lifted by the large attendance of locals who travelled to Portrun to support and well done to Ronnie Johnston who was competing in his first triathlon. Colin, Niall, Brendan and Johnny are next off to Achill in two weeks to compete in the Achill Roar Adventure race which includes Swimming, Hill running, cycling and kayaking.

Is there anything that this group won’t have a go at!
