Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Birth

Congratulations to Mark and Deirdre Kenny, Blenavoher on the birth last week of a baby boy.

New Garda Sergeant in Lanesboro

With the shocking and disturbing news from a Sunday newspaper and the growing pressure that is borne by the local Gardaí it was great news for the local community and indeed the local Gardaí to hear of the arrival of a new sergeant in town. We welcome to Lanesboro Sergeant Gary Loughrey who was transferred last week. Gary was previously stationed in Co. Cavan will be a very welcome addition to the local force.

The news on Sunday would send alarm bells ringing and makes you wonder who exactly is living in or moving in and out of our community. The only way that we can be reassured is by the restoration of the force to the previous numbers where the Gardaí with the full support of our own community can work together to make sure our community reclaims the old mannerisms where we all worked, helped, supported and looked out for each other, which I am sure will lead to the eradication of the anti-social behaviour and crime that happens in the area. Our Neighbourhood Watch does sterling work but we need for everybody, both town and country, to be together to support both the Gardaí and Neighbourhood Watch.

Previously I have written on this subject and although we have received some additions – for which we are greatly heartened by – we can still hope that Lanesboro will be once again restored to a full complement of Gardaí in the near future. The recent addition has indeed been a help and with the addition of our new sergeant and hopefully the full restoration of numbers will again take the huge burden of the present force based in Lanesboro. We must pay compliment to the Garda Superintendent in Longford for recognising our plight with the recent additions and look forward to more good news for our Lanesboro Garda force.

Table Quiz

Longford Hospice and Galway Care Centre will be the two very worthy recipients of a Table Quiz being held in the Peer In on Friday night next 8th October at 9.30. All quiz buffs their friends and especially those that want a great night of fun and want to support these very important causes should go along and make the night a memorable one.

Lough Ree AC

Primary Schools: As far as the club was concerned the County Longford Primary Schools cross-country championships was the event of the weekend. The venue was the grounds of St. Mel’s College on Friday last.

The event was well organised by Longford Athletic club who are to be complimented for their efforts. Any hiccups can be attributed to the fact that they were expecting an entry of 100 and had in the region of 300 competitors.

Results: There is no doubt that Killoe were the dominant school. Their teams won three of the four races. Not only did they win, but they won well. Their team finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th for 11 points. The rest of the squad were not too far behind either. To put it in perspective, second were Stonepark with 71points and third were Fermoyle with 77 points.

This is not about Killoe but it is very hard to ignore them. Fermoyle NS kept the local interest high. In fairness they won the 5th/6th girls’ event, 45points, with Sarah Farrell leading them home in 7th place, from Melview with 56points. Haley Rooney 8th, Anna Peters 12, and Tanya Farrell 18th completed the scoring. Hannah Shea and Niamh Chawke completed the team. Congratulations girls!

Staying with the lassies, Fermoyle 3rd/4th class (40points) were 2nd to Killoe. Sprinter Orla Keane was 7th, was first to finish, followed by Lucy Ann Myhill 11th, Áine Kennelly 15th, and Grainne Chawke 17th.

The boys had to contend with the “Killoe Greyhounds” and the 3rd/4th class were 2nd to them for silver and ahead of Stonepark. Cronan Flood 8th led the gang home followed by Cian Gilmore 13th, Oran Kenny 20th and Bryn Peters 22nd for a total of 63 points.

At the time of writing we have are not in receipt of individual details of the last race, the 5th/6th Boys over a distance of 1000m. Killoe with 11points dominated followed home by Stonepark in second with 71 points and Fermoyle with 77 points taking the bronze from Ardagh in fourth. Our ‘man of the match’ came from this group, i.e. Connell Kennelly in fourth place was the only one to live with the Killoe lads and split up their group. One wonders if he gave as much of his time to athletics as he does to other sports what he could achieve.

The Harry Farrell Shield was retained by Killoe NS. The first three teams in each category can compete at the Connaught Schools in Sligo later in the month where the Cahill Cup is up for grabs.

One may feel that this report is lopsided, but none of our athletes from Lanesboro, Killashee or Cloontagh took part.

We can look forward to the County Roscommon Primary Schools next week. We hope the road races promoted by St. Barry’s GAA on Sunday next will get the support it deserves.

Birth

Congratulations to Brian and Alita Neilan, Rathcline Road, on the birth last week of a baby boy.

She ministered in the educational system in Ballymahon Primary School and in Lanesboro NS. She has also worked on team in Retreat Centre, Mullahmore, Co. Sligo and has now arrived at a new phase on life’s journey and has moved to Galway.

We wish her many more years of happiness, good health and relaxed times in her scenic location by the seaside. “Ad Multos Annos”

Memories of Quarry

We are looking for any information, memories, photos and documents etc. that anyone might have on the quarries in The Commons, Lanesborough. We have gathered information from various sources to date and know that the most recent quarries were in operation from the late 1940s to the early 1960s producing lime for agricultural use. What would be very useful is information and imagery related to Lanesborough, especially quarrying and the technology/machinery (including trucks for transporting) used at that time. We are also interested in any information on early quarrying in the area (stone for building or road use), from the 1800s. Please pass on any information you might have to Mary Fleming on 086 171 5043 or email mary@rustylemon.com or Sarah Crinigan on 087 819 7164 or email crinigs@eircom.net. Photos and documents will be scanned and returned immediately and credited if used.

This is a project well worth subscribing to and if you have any of the details that are being sought please contact Sarah or Mary without delay. All interest and history of our parish is worthwhile and keeps alive the memory of those that worked so hard for our area in bygone days.

Lanesboro Triathlon Club News

Perfect timing is all that could be said of Ronie Masterson’s run at the Galway Bay 10k over the weekend. Ronie lined up at the prestigious foot race on Saturday with a huge field of home and international athletes for the 6.2 mile race. Her training had been going very well in advance of her representation of the Irish Defence Forces at the Military Olympics next week where she competes in the gruelling half marathon and now it was time to see if she was on track. In a brave move she tore into the almost800 strong field to lead from the gun. This rarely seen athletic gamble can often backfire as the runner is then cautiously stalked by all other similarly strong athletes who wait like hunters to pounce at the slightest sign of weakness. In very windy conditions Ronie had a fight on her hands to maintain her dominance of the race from the second female in the hunt who marked her closely however her resilience, strength and self belief prevailed and she crossed the line in first place in the time of 43 mins and 6th overall from the entire field.

This was a magnificent achievement and sets her up perfectly for her half marathon in an Irish Vest in Paris next week and we all wish her the very best . She received her prize from the Olympic Silver Medalist John Treacy and was a very popular winner. P J O’Neill travelled with her to support her in the race and trotted around himself in a very respectable 48 minutes.

Masters Swimming continues every Monday at 9 and the Club will hold its Open Day on Saturday  16th October at 6 pm in the Co-op Hall Lanesboro where membership of the new Club will be open. Any enquiries can be made to the Club Secretary Brendan O’Sullivan @ 0862544534
