Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Gardaí Success

Monday and Tuesday night last seen a number of burglaries on the Rathcline and Ballymahon Roads. It created a great deal of angst throughout the area and the insecurity it caused was to be seen through the conversations I had with so many people. It is a most awful feeling for the community to live with the threat of what happened on the two nights.

The local Gardaí investigated it and left no stone unturned in catching the culprits. Their great work payed off on Wednesday when we learned on Thursday evening that the Gardaí had arrested four Romanians in Castlerea where they were continuing their robbing spree and the local Gardaí identified them as those that carried out those dastardly deeds within our community. They are presently in custody and will appear in court on Friday next.

We must complement our local Gardaí for their tremendous work in apprehending these criminals. We must be more vigilant with our property and those that create doubt or suspicion in our community. Do not hesitate to call the Gardaí if you see or suspect something that is out of the ordinary.

A Great Night Out in New York

Saturday 2nd October past the County Longford Social Club of New York hosted their 20th annual Dinner Dance. The reports coming back were that the night was a tremendous success and it was a night to beat all nights of the previous 19 years. As usual a good number from the local area travelled to join in the celebrations of the night. The committee of the County Longford Social Club has a strong local connection and it is great to see them working for their county in NY. The President of the association is Siobhan Henry, daughter of Walter and Nuala Henry who does tremendous work for the county of her mother and grandparents. Nuala, formerly Nuala Mullooly from Killinure has been a strong in NY for many years and has been a tremendous aid to many emigrants down through the years had been in the recent past and it was especially pleasing to see her back to her old self at the dance. The other link to the parish is none other than David Ross son of Annie and Barney Ross, Church View. David has been in NY for many years and like Nuala he has been a great help to many from the county that moved to NY to start a new life. It is wonderful to see that our locals and indeed there were many of them there on the night have never lost sight of their home county. Long may the work of our representatives on the committee and the County Longford Social Club continue for the benefit of Longford people both home and abroad.

The County Longford Social Club of New York contributes to many causes in both NY and at home in Longford and in the past have made a contribution to the Fermoyle National School building fund – it was a wonderful and unexpected gesture.

Full marks to St. Barry’s G.F.C. for their promotion of a very successful ½ marathon and 6k road race in Tarmonbarry on Sunday last.

They had over 90 runners for the half marathon and something less for the 6k. It is an event that is getting bigger and better every year, if the comments on the internet are anything to go by.

Some of the local youngsters made the short journey to the Shannonside village to take part in the juvenile events.

Larissa Noone was the first to finish in the Girls under 12, while Eanna Donohoe was third in the Boy’s under 12 with Cronan Flood on fifth place. In the Girls under 10 Orla Keane was a good second, with Clodagh Kiely not far behind. Donohoe and Flood were eligible to run at this age group but have no regrets for taking the older group. All enjoyed the morning out and the hospitality of the occasion.

The club’s Tuesday evening run at Clonbonny goes ahead as usual at 6pm. Last week Odhran Wyse surprised all with the fastest time (9.06min). This is the third run in succession that he has improved his time. The youthful Lauren Tansey posted the second best girls time (10.32min) on her first time. Lucy Ann Myhill (10.28min) was better – her best time to date.

This Fun-Run is open to anyone who has a half hour to spare.

Ballyboro Youth Soccer

U13: We wish Conor Walton a speedy recovery from his injury

U11: Ballyboro Lions V Ardagh. Final Score 4-1.

Following an opening day win against Raharney in which the goals flowed with hat-tricks from Philip Chalmers & Connell Kennelly, Boro had to dig much deeper against a determined Ardagh side. Going one down early, Jack Magan tied things up with a 2 touch finish just before the break. In the 2nd half, it was nip & tuck with excellent Kennelly driving on before Philip Chalmers scored a superb solo effort, picking the ball up on the side-line & dribbling past defenders to cooly slot home. A deft header from Magan put Boro in control before Evan Chalmers drove in the 4th from a tight angle. The game was much closer than the scoreline suggests & great defending form Niall Casey kept Boro in it. Special mention to young Evan Chalmers who played to make up the seven & put in a blazing performance.

U8: Ballyboro V Kenagh. Final Score 6-0.

The best way to describe this game is to congratulate the Management on playing 13 players & the players for an excellent performance. Sean Kenny & Davin Sweeney impressed in the forwards, Evan Chalmers, Brian Casey & Seadna Ryan put the running in at midfield. Mark Silva & John Mc Loughlin were rock solid while the Prior Boys & Davin Kilcoyne impressed with Jack Tucker looking a natural in goals.

Final Registrations have taken please so we now have two U7 Teams, one U8, two U9, one U10, two U11, one U12, one U13, one U14 and one U16 Team. We have Three Girls Teams, U9, U11 and U13.
