Death

On Monday last 19th November we learned of the death at Costello’s Nursing Home following a long illness of Cyril Gavigan. He was predeceased by his parents Jimmy and Anne. Cyril, formerly of Thureen, was a resident in Lough Ree Park for a good number of years. He was a man who was very diligent in everything he done and is remembered by all that knew him in previous years as a man who always worked very hard. He was a great conversationalist and loved to have the chat and especially recount old times. He loved the simple things of life and had a love of nature. His remains reposed at his family home in Thureen on Wednesday last. On Thursday his remans were removed to St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro for Mass of the Resurrection and burial in Clonbonny followed following Mass.

To his sisters and brothers Annette, Geraldine, Tony, Garry, Bosco, Kevin, Noel, Maria, Eamon and Martina, aunts and uncles, relatives and friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Distinguished Visitor

The piece below was taken from Lanesboro Primary School webpage:

We recently had the great pleasure of welcoming Malcolm O’Hagan to our school following his generous donation through the Irish American Partnership. The school applied to the partnership for funds to begin our guided reading library and Dr. O’Hagan very kindly met the grant application in full. Malcolm is a grandson of Master Edward Rhatigan, who was principal of Lanesborough Primary School from 1908 – 1947. Master Rhatigan ran the school together with his wife, Malcolm’s grandmother. Malcolm was also very generous with his time and took great interest in listening to some children read. Afterwards, he chatted freely with us about his memories of summer days spent in Lanesborough with his grandparents. Ms Murphy presented Malcolm with a framed photograph of Lanesborough by local photographer Brigid Mullooly as a token of our appreciation.

New Book Launch

On January 10, 1952 an Aer Lingus passenger plane, St Kevin, coming from London to Dublin crashed into a mountain top in Snowdonia National Park, North Wales killing all on board.  On board was a 28-year-old local girl, Evelyn Belton, Rathcline. She was employed by The Silk Mills Group in Dublin as Senior Overseas Fashion Buyer and was returning from London after attending a Fashion Show.  Hers was one of the bodies recovered and she is now buried in the family plot in Rathcline, with the funeral cortege extending over 2 miles in length (L. Leader 19/01/52).  Family friends travelled to support the family in Wales & England – Joe O’Brien MPSI attended the inquest in Wales & four Rathcline men travelled to London to carry their friend shoulder high on to the waiting plane – a custom not done in England. They were Eddie Farrell, Mike Murray, John Hynes & P Mullooly. Sadly, all those friends have also passed away. On the weekend 2-5 November many relatives of the deceased met in Wales, completed the trek to the crash site and attended the launch of ‘Shamrock 165; the unknown crash’. The book had its Irish launch in Sligo, again attended by families of the deceased. Guest of Honour that night was a lively Peggy Murphy Lennon, Curraghacrehan.  She spoke emotionally to other families about her friend and cousin, Evelyn and of seeing her in December 1951 in Dublin. (Both Peggy’s Grandmother & Evelyn’s Grandmother were sisters-Rhatigans and both their Grandfathers were brothers – Beltons).  On the front cover of the book is the last photo taken of Evelyn & her friend and work colleague Kay Talbot, taken only a few hours before they parted company, the afternoon of the ill-fated flight.  Clearly visible is the bangle on Evelyn’s wrist which was included as part of the identification.  The full story of St Kevin will be rolled out in a three-part multi-volume format.  Included in Volume 1 is Evelyn Belton’s story.  The limited edition, hard-backed book is now for sale locally in Joe and Martina O’Brien’s Newsagents, Lanesboro.
