Christmas and New Year Greetings
I would like to take the opportunity the Longford Leader affords me through the notes to wish each and every reader of the local notes a Christmas full of happiness, contentment and holiness. May I wish you a hugely successful, healthy and prosperous New Year. A special thought goes to those who have family members in ill health and in hospital. At this time of year we remember all our loved ones that passed and we must also bask in the bundles of joy that arrived to couples throughout the year.
May we start not only with a New Year but also with a new and bright ERA. That the troubles that has blighted so many be consigned to history and a new and forward outlook full of optimism rise with the dawning of 1/1/11. Hopefully, it will be the commencement of what will be a hugely significant time for us.
I would also like to thank editor, Sheila Reilly and the staff of the Longford Leader for all their help and assistance during the year.
Death
The entire area was saddened to hear of the death at Roscommon County Hospital on Sunday 12th December of paddy Mullooly, Lehery. Paddy was predeceased by his wife Molly a number of years ago. He was a member of one of the oldest families in the parish of Rathcline and his passing saddens the heart of everybody that had the pleasure to know him. Paddy was a mild mannered and softly spoken thorough gentleman whose genuine nature ensured his legendary status within our area. He had a wonderful affiliation to the Rathcline club throughout his lifetime. Paddy was a former employee of Bord na Mona until his retirement and prior to that he worked with the quarry until its closure. Paddy also farmed his land with great diligence. He was a tremendous friend to young and old alike, an exceptional neighbour where nobody was ever left unaided in their time of need. He liked nothing more than a pint and a game of cards until his failing health brought these simple ways of life to an end. Each and everybody that knew Paddy Mullooly will be the poorer by his passing but the memories he gave us will live with us through our lives.
The attendance at his removal to St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro on Monday and Requiem Mass and interment to Lanesboro cemetery on Tuesday was both large and representative.
To his sons Padraic, Mike and Louis, daughters Margaret and Brigid, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Don’t Forget Special Fundraising Night
If you gave nothing else was given this Christmas only a ticket for this function it would be the gift of a lifetime.
A very special Fundraising night will take place in the Peer Inn on Sunday week 26th September – St. Stephen’s Night. This is a very special night and the support of not only our community but the wider community is encouraged for this special night. Your support will be a lot more than appreciated.
Tickets are widely available throughout the area or from O’Brien’s Corner Shop. Please be as supportive as you can most humanly be for this night and do go along and make it a tremendously successful night. Music will be supplied by local artists from 10 until late. Tickets are priced at a very reasonable €10.
Christmas Day Run Promises to break Record
Judging by the number seeking sponsorship cards for the Christmas Day Run/Walk from Newtowncashel to Lanesboro leads me to believe that the Longford Multiple Sclerosis organisers are going to celebrate their 20th anniversary in real style. The tradition Run/Walk will take off from Newtowncashel to Lanesboro with the walkers setting off at 11.45am and the runners at 12.15pm.
The organisers would like to thanks everybody that has so far picked up their sponsorship cards and would like to ask anybody else intending to run to pick up their sponsorship cards as soon as possible. We are in times that are financially difficult for everyone and none need your support more than MS sufferers. As this is the main fundraiser of the year the committee encourages you to maximize your efforts in raising sponsorship.

Christmas Day Swim is now upon Us
Now that the weather has taken a changed for the better it feels almost balmy in comparison to the last week and the talk of the brave hearted has again turned to the annual Christmas Day Swim. The number of people coming into the shop seeking their sponsorship cards for the swim has continued throughout the past week and it is heartening to see so many want to support the Lough Ree Sub Aqua club and take the plunge into the icy cold water.
This year is the 31st year of the sponsored swim and it is hoped that the numbers this year will exceed all records. The swim has raised much money for the Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club and local charities for the past 30 years and it is hoped that a huge number will once again take the plunge on Christmas Day and help the Sub Aqua club.
Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club is one of the leading clubs in the country and has been to the forefront in search and rescue for many years. Their work is without doubt vital and your support for the Swim will be greatly appreciated.

St. John’s Church Christmas Services
The Christmas Service schedule for St. John’s parishioners are as follows: In St. John’s Church Lanesboro there will be Holy Communion service on Christmas Eve at 9pm. On St. Stephen’s day there will be Morning service and Carols at 11.30am. In St. Coman’s Roscommon on Sunday 19th December there will be Service at 11.30am. On Christmas Day there will be Holy Communion Service at 11am.
Shannon Gaels
AGM – The club AGM had to be cancelled last week and it has now been rescheduled for . The club would like to welcome everybody with an interest in the underage development and just an interest in Shannon Gaels to come along to Áras Rathclaon in Clonbonny. The views and comments of everybody will be much appreciated as we go forward. The past year was historically successful both on and off the field and we are striving to cultivate greater achievements in the year ahead. The achievements on the field were tremendous but the successes of our Scór teams were truly wonderful. Search for a Star continues to grow and develop and we are hugely indebted to everybody that makes this event the social highlight of the calendar in the parish.
This is the time of the year to all our mentors, committees, volunteers, supporters and friends for their efforts in what was memorable and historic year for the sporting and social development of Shannon Gaels. Without all of you we are nothing.
We hope that Daidí na Nollaig will reward all of our young players and their friends on Christmas Eve.

Christmas day Run – it is great to see some of our minor club players keeping fit. A number of them have decided to do the Christmas Day run in aid of MS. Fair play to ye lads.
Congratulations to Seadna Ryan on winning a bronze in the All Ireland Schools Swimming Finals in Belfast last week.
The club would like to wish everybody a very happy and Holy Christmas and a wonderful 2011 and the club looks forward to your continued support during the year.
Engagement
Many congratulations to Mary Mc Cormack daughter of Brian and Maura Mc Cormack, Gortgallon and Wayne Kinsella, son of Paula and the late Dominick Kinsella, Terenure, Dublin who announced their engagement recently.
Rural Transport Completes another Year of Growth
Longford Community Resources Ltd (LCRL) is delighted with the announcement in the recent Budget that the Rural Transport Programme will be continued in 2011, even with a slightly reduced Budget.
This is great news and indeed a relief for all the Passengers who use the Service, many thanks to them and to all the stakeholders who have supported, and indeed campaigned for the continuation of the Programme throughout the year.
The timetable for all routes for 2010 will be completed on Thursday 23rd December and services for 2011 will resume on Tuesday 4th January.
LCRL would like to wish all passengers and everyone who supports the Rural Transport Programme a Very Happy and Peaceful Christmas and Good Wishes for the New Year.
All Ireland Bronze Winner
Seadna Ryan son of Seadna and Teresa Ryan, Main Street competed in All Ireland Schools Swimming Championship in Ballymena, representing Lanesboro Primary School. He produced a wonderful performance and he was rewarded with a bronze medal in the under 9 butterfly competition.
Christmas Disco
Cloontuskert NS is holding a Christmas Disco in St. Faithleachs Clubhouse on Thursday 30th December. The disco will be a bumper night of fun and will take place between 7.30 and 9.30pm. Go along and enjoy a wonderful night.
Rathcline Fundraising Draw
The annual Rathcline GAA Christmas draw was launched last weekend and the club is seeking the support of the entire community for this draw. The proceeds from this draw traditionally goes towards paying the registration and affiliation of all teams within the Rathcline Club. More often than not the amount of money due for affiliation and registration is greater than the proceeds of the draw such is the enormous figure leaving the club in the first month of the year. With having paid this money up front the club would not be permitted to represent our parish hence we encourage everybody to support the draw. As you can see this draw is very vital for the Rathcline club.
The draw will take place on Saturday 8th January in the Swan Tavern at 11pm. Tickets are priced at €20 each and the prizes on offer are: 1st €3000, 2nd €1000, 3rd €750, 4th €500, 5th €250, 6th €200, 7th €200, 8th €200, 9th €200 and 10th €200.
Santa
Santa will be out and about Christmas week. If anybody would like Santa to call to their house or to Nursing home to have their photographs taken with Santa just phone 086-3963292.
Farmers take Heed

The RPD Grant is available under the following seven measures: 1 Diversification into non-agricultural activities; 2 Business creation and development; 3 Encouragement of tourism activities; 4 Basic services for the economy and rural population;
5 Village renewal and development; 6 Conservation and upgrading of Rural Heritage; 7 Training and information.
A RPD worker will be available to discuss any ideas you have or for general enquiries about accessing funding. You can make an appointment by calling 3345555 or just call into the any of the following venues.
RPD Outreach Information Clinics will commence in January and the local clinic will take place in Newtowncashel Community Hall (The Hill) on Monday 10th January from 10am to 1pm and every second Monday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
