Still haven’t found what I’m Looking For!
Monday morning at 7 am brought back a familiar sight of 2010 and a sight that the businesses of the town definitely did not welcome. Yes, the bollards, and traffic lights along with the diggers are back, again, for what is phase 1 of another session of digging in the town. Believe it or not it is going to take 7 to 10 days to churn up the existing road and relay new surface from the corner to James Casey’s and remember this is only phase 1. To having just completed the suffering of 12/15 months of it we again have to face phase1 and then the phase 2 which will entail, so I am informed, the digging again in the lower end of the town before resurfacing. It will see another year of lack of business in the town. My God! But it is truly unbelievable and unacceptable that we should have to suffer the ignominy of not one but two years of this. Where, how or why can anybody do or propose business in Lanesboro?
Community College Celebrates 50 Years
Lanesboro Community College, formerly Vocational School, will this year celebrate their 50th of education in Lanesboro. To celebrate, there will be a social evening in the school at Easter. Special guests will be the students and staff from 1060 together with staff and students from their amalgamation year, 1989. All past pupils will be most welcome on the night. It will be a wonderful nostalgic day and one all past pupils should make the determined effort to attend.
There is always a difficulty in tracking down people from back then and the organising committee would like invite anybody from either era to help with the locating of everybody. 25 Drive in Peer Inn
The 25 Drive in the Peer Inn every Sunday night is proving to be a night out growing in popularity for card players from the parishes of Rathcline, Cashel and Killashee. The game starts at 9pm sharp each Sunday night. This week’s winners were; 1st Jimmy Brennan and Ger Scally, 2nd Tom scally and Tom Rooney. Table prizes were won by Paddy Fayne, Sonny Shea, Danny Ganly & Seamus Berminghan, Joe Dolan and Edmond.
Lanesboro Bridge Club
The results of the competition held on Wednesday 17th January are; 1st Frank & Frances Brennan, 2nd Brid Mc Dermott & Una Lawlor, 3rd Tom Feeney & Kathleen Reilly.
The EGM will be held on this Wednesday night 24th January after the weekly competition.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the daughters Margaret, Kathleen and Eileen, sons Sonny and Johnnie and the extended families of the late Margaret Tiernan, Kilrooskey who was interred during the past week.
Death
It was with profound sadness we learned of the death at the County Hospital, Roscommon, on Wednesday last 19th January of Marie Mulvihill, Aughaloghan. Marie was predeceased in 2009 by her husband Frank. Marie, formerly Merrigan, a native of Newtowncashel was a familiar part of our community since her marriage. She was a keen gardener in which she took great pride. For a number of years Marie was a carer with many elderly people in our parish. Along with her husband Frank she raised two of the finest young people ever to grace the parish of Rathcline and for this she left a lasting and wonderful legacy. Her remains were removed from her residence to St. Mary’s Church Lanesboro on Saturday last and following her Funeral Mass her remains were laid to rest beside Frank in Clonbonny. The attendance was both large and representative. To her daughter Edel, son Patrick, brothers Pat and John, sisters Concepta and Kathleen relatives and many friend we extend our deepest sympathy.
Lanesboro CC in Leinster Final
Following a thrilling semi-final on Wednesday last in the under 16 North Leinster semi-final Lanesboro Community College overcame a strong challenge from a much fancied Bush P.P. Co. Louth. The Lanesboro lads showed tremendous guts and determination to overcome a shaky start and 3 point half time deficit. Indeed with the game going into injury time the local lads conceded a goal to allow Bush back to level terms and things did not look top rosy. But these young men are nothing if not gutsy and they were not to be denied by going down the field immediately from the kick out and tagging on two winning points. The college have accounted for quality sides in Granard V.S. and Athboy C.C. before reaching the challenge of Bush P.P. all of which will stand them in great steed going into the final. The final date and opponents have yet to be decided but we are sure these young men from Lanesboro Community College will go on and record a historic win.

Lanesboro Gun Club
A meeting of Lanesboro Gun Club will take place on this Friday night 28th January at 9.30pm sharp in Adie Farrell’s meeting room. All members are asked to make the special effort to attend.
Lanesboro Badminton Club
The club would like to send huge congratulations to the Grade 5 Longford County Team who took part in the Leinster Inter-County Competition last Sunday. The team saw off Counties Meath and Wicklow and will entertain our neighbours, Westmeath in the semi-finals on Sunday 6th March in Baldoyle Dublin. Lanesboro Club can be particularly proud as four of its members were selected for the team. They are, Maura Duffy, Edel McDermott, Franc Casey and Stephen Herraty. It’s a busy season for everyone at the moment, due to the snow and match cancellations all our teams are being kept on their toes. However, with all teams doing well on the League Tables, hopefully we’ll have Lanesboro in each Final….watch this space!!!! A Junior competition is currently being organised for mid-late February, details to follow.
Community College Open Day
Lanesboro Community College will be holding its ‘open day’ on this Thursday 27th January. This is an exciting day in the school and students 5th and 6th class, from all National Schools in the greater area who all invited to attend. Present 1st years and others will present what they have learned since coming to the college. The day is a very enjoyable experience for both the national school children and the first years as they renew friendships with former schoolmates. Parents from outside the town will be collected by bus, as heretofore.
Shannon Gaels Minor Club
The club would like to extend our sincere sympathy Patrick and Edel Mulvihill, Aughaloghan, and the extended Mulvihill and Merrigan families on the death last week of Marie Mulvihill.
Ballyboro Under 9
Ballyboro Lions 6 Gaels Utd 2. The young lions had a hard fought victory over the Gaels in Drumlish on Saturday last. After a poor first half display the Lions trailed by 2goals to nil. Following some harsh words at half time a different team attitude emerged where they banged in 6 unanswered goals with 4 going to Shaun Horgan and Liam Ormsby chipping in with 2 goals. The lions now progress unbeaten to the next stages of the league.
Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing are held in Longford Clinic on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month from 10am to 1pm. No appointments are necessary.
Culinary Demonstration
Fermoyle N.S. Parents Association presents an evening of Culinary Demonstration by celebrity chef Frank Moynihan in the Peer Inn on Thursday 4th February at 8pm. Tickets are priced at €10 and your support will be greatly appreciated.

Learn Online for FREE with FAS at Lanesboro Library!
An ‘Online Learning’ Initiative is running in your local library over the next few months. The courses are all online and open to everybody over 18. All courses have been developed for people with little or no IT Skills as well as those with some IT knowledge. Some of the courses running include: Introduction to Computers, Internet and Email, ECDL, Basic Finance, Health and Safety.
Registration forms are available at the Library. A FAS course facilitator will be present every Wednesday from 2pm 3.30pm for any queries you may have.

Statement from Mark Casey
I just received the following statement from Mark Casey for inclusion in the notes.
Resurfacing works on main street Lanesborough has started and will last for the next 7 to 10 days. Phase 1 of the works involve removing 12” of the existing road and rebuilding the foundation of the road along with relaying a new surface. The works will be carried out from O’Brien’s Corner to James Casey’s. Phase 2 is scheduled later in the year and will complete the main street to the bridge.
This work will sufficiently improve the road for the user along with improving the overall appearance of the town. These works that were scheduled to start last November/ December but were postponed due to the poor weather conditions at the time.

The results of the 25 drive in the Lough Ree Co-Op held on Sunday night last were: joint first with 12 games PJ & Bridie and Dan & Gerry. Table prize Josie & Tommy and the raffle prizes winners Tommy, Val, Tom and Josie. The jackpot on Sunday night stands at €330 on 14 games. The game continues every Sunday night at 8.30pm
