Entitled

‘Caring for our Environment’

PRESS RELEASE

After 50 years of providing excellent education in the area, Lanesboro Community College turned over a new leaf with the commencement of the Comenius Project.

Entitled ‘Caring for our Environment’ the general aim of the project is to enhance the quality and to reinforce the European dimension of school education and encouraging collaborative and creative learning. The working language of the project is English.

Students of the three partner countries, Belgium, France and Ireland, will work together on challenges of sustainable development, taking care of our environment, exchanging creative work they have done through virtual discussions using ICT.

Teachers will share best practice, develop a learning methodology and learn from each other.

Aim:  Raise awareness of the importance of sustainable development in daily life to build the future for next generations through involvement between schools in Europe by means of the e-twinning “twin space” to reflect, discuss and plan.

A shared learning experience for teachers and students they will never forget, and which will lead to further reflective practice, encouraging lifelong learning.

Enhance quality, reinforce the European dimension of school education and encourage language learning. Finally to promote the core value of caring as a means of bringing about sustainable development.

Goal: Enhance relations between European countries, and at the same time promoting tourism and jobs for the future in our community. Give our students an opportunity to do something concrete for the environment and in the process learn the link between interdependence and sustainability. Their world; their responsibility.

This program is funded by Leargas Education Services under ESF funds and will be for 2 years.

The week kicks off on the 14th of February with a guided walk in the North Commons Woodlands, Lanesboro, prepared by our 2nd year students and Katy Egan .On Tuesday we’re off to Corlea interpretive centre and under the tutelage of Noel Carberry look at our bogs and our relationship with them down through the ages up to the present day. Finally on Wednesday we head towards Lough Cé in Boyle to spend the day teambuilding with Deirdre Cunningham, our outdoor education teacher and her team of students. In between we will be working with each other   on blogs and presentations, planning and creating the different aspects of the project. It won’t all be hard work though…plenty of music, dancing and craic is laid on in the evenings with Irish set dancing workshops and a sing along on the Monday and Tuesday night in St. Faithleachs , finishing up with a traditional night out in a local pub.

At heart this project will be about creatively collaborating with each other on the themes of interdependence and sustainability. We are, all of us, dependant on our environment, our family, our community. And they are dependent on us. This is the simple idea that the students and teachers from these schools are trying develop in this project. We need each other. We are interdependent and to think that you can go it on your own is fundamentally unsustainable. Over the next two years students and teachers from the three countries will continue to develop these themes.

We hope that, after experiencing our warm Irish welcome, our beautiful, unspoilt environment and our happy hardworking school ,our European friends will have only one thing on their mind…when can they come back to our town!
