Shannon Gaels Registration
Parents are reminded that the final opportunity to register for the 2011 season takes place on Tuesday 1st March from 7 to 8 pm, in the Clubhouse. Registration is necessary for insurance purposes and unregistered players cannot participate in training/matches. It is very important that every parent that has not already registered their young players should avail of the opportunity on Tuesday
Grow your own course
You are invited to take part in an ’Organic Fruit & Vegetables’ in St. Mary’s Parish Hall commencing on Tuesday 1st March. The course will take will take from 7pm to 9 pm over a three week period. Ladies Footballers Registration Night
Registration will take place in the Clubhouse in Clonbonny on Sunday next 27th February at 12.30 for the u14 ladies. Could all parents ensure that the children are registered in order for them to play football for the coming year? Registration fee is €35.
A tremendous effort is being made to retain and develop ladies football in Rathcline and Cashel and every parent with girls should register them and encourage greater participation in our club.
Defacing Posters
It is particularly unsightly to approach a town or village and see the election posters defaced. It is most unsatisfactory when it is in your own area. This is something that should not happen. We all have our differences with politicians and I suppose this time more than any but defacing is not the way to express your views. We can meet them on their canvass, we can raise our objections among family and friends during conversations, we can join and canvass with opposition parties and the strongest way is by not voting for the politician that you feel let you down but defacing their signs and posters should not happen.
Lourdes Invalid Fund Collection
The organising committee of the local Lourdes Invalid Fund Collection held at masses in St. Mary’s Church Lanesboro would like to sincerely thank everybody that gave so generously. The sum realised amounted to €571.70.
25 Card Game in Peer Inn
The winners of the regular Sunday night card game in the Peer Inn, Lisnacusha are: 1st Packie Feeney & Tom Scally, second Joe Dolan & Edmund. Table prizes went to Harry Scally & Mike Brennan, Padraig Hand and Paddy Flood and Seamus Bermingham & Danny Ganly
The game continues every Sunday night in the Peer Inn commencing at 9pm
Tickets at a premium
With tickets for the Saturday night production of Search for a Star sold out and as I go to press there are only a limited number left for Sunday night. To make sure of your seat for what promises to be another fabulous night of entertainment call into Martina or Bridgie O’Brien at the Corner Shop.
Ladies Hands across the Shannon
An 8 week programme (1 hour session) entitled ‘Gaelic 4 Girls’ will start on Saturday 5th march on St. Faithleach’s GAA pitch at 4pm. This programme is aimed at 9 – 13 year old girls in the hope that they will continue to play with their local clubs in their area. The programme is focussed on fun and participation, allowing girls to get an introduction to ladies Gaelic Football in a non-competitive environment.
Rathcline and St. Faithleach’s have come together to run this programme and it cost €8 for one over 8 weeks.
Parents are encouraged to bring along their children as it will be an 8 week programme full of fun and games.
Lanesboro Community Games
The Community Games committee will be organising a Quiz on Friday 4th March 7-8pm in order to get a team for the Mixed U14 Quiz competition. Six children will be required for the team.
The Mixed U-10 Football panel of 20 is being assembled. Please contact the Shannon Gaels Club if you are interested in being part of this.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade
The St. Patrick’s Day parade will take place in Lanesboro on Thursday 17th March. Anybody interested in taking part on the parade should contact the Co-Op to receive application form. I would encourage as many as humanly possible within club and associations to get active and make this year a wonderful and best year of the parade.
25 Drive in Co-Op
The results of the game played on Sunday night last. First with 14 games was Michael Kelly & Brendan Hanley, joint second Mary & Liz and Tom & Pat with 10 games. The table prize went to Mark and Noreen and the raffle winners were Pat Newman, Elizabeth Clyne, Ronan Cullen and Jim Horan.
Indoor Market
The Indoor market continues every Friday in the Co-Op hall from 11am to 2pm. If you are unable to attend and want to place an order you should ring the Co-Op 33 27070.
Rathcline GAA Notes
The club would like to remind everyone that membership is now due €50 for players and €20 for non-playing members. Given that matches have already started in the club at both senior and minor level, it is vital that membership is paid so as to be covered by the players’ insurance injury scheme. Fees can be given to Brendan Rhatigan, Denis Crinigan, Peter Skelly or to any member of the executive.
If any player has club jerseys please return them to the executive as soon as possible.
We would like to wish a speedy recovery to our club manager Walter Burke and we hope to see him back in action soon.
Draw 10 of the Continuous Development fundraiser will take place in the Lough Ree Arms next Saturday night 26th February at 11pm: 1st Prize – €500. 2nd Prize – €100. 3rd Prize – €100. 4th Prize – €100. 5th Prize – €100. 6th Prize – 2 Premium Stand Tickets for the AIB All-Ireland Club Finals (Football and Hurling) in Croke Park on Thursday 17th March 2011 with €100 spending money.
The annual County Board Punchestown racing festival is scheduled to take place May 4th this year. Once again it is Rathcline’s intention to fill as many tables as possible for the club. Anyone who is interested can make early contributions to Liam Connerton so as to avoid the last minute rush for tickets in the coming months.
We would like to thank everybody who participated in Scór which took place in Ballinamuck last weekend.
We would like to extend our sympathies to the Harrison family, Ballyleague, on the sudden death of Tom Harrison.
The minor club are holding Search for a Star this Saturday and Sunday night 25th and 26th in St. Mary’s Hall. It promises to be a great show once again. A limited number of tickets are still available from O’Brien’s corner shop priced €10. Please get your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

Table Quiz: Many thanks to all who supported our Table Quiz held in the Club House on Friday last. Thanks to our Quiz Master, Michael Cleary who also prepared the questions for the event. Comenius Partnership Ireland meeting February, 2011-02-18
The Comenius school partnership meeting between Ireland, Belgium and France was hosted by our school, Lanesboro Community College, and took place between 13-16th of February .From the moment our European visitors arrived we made sure they were given a warm Irish welcome. There were many highlights; from ecology workshops to Irish set dancing; from sing-a- longs to learning how to play Gaelic games. The teachers and the students from Belgium and France gave presentations on projects that they are doing in their own schools whilst our own students proudly demonstrated the work that they are involved in.
The project which we were coming together to work on is entitled “Caring for our Environment” and will run for two years .During this time we will work together with our partners schools on activities which are designed to raise awareness and to improve the environments we live in. Both teachers and students collaborate and we use ICT to communicate and work together during the year. Examples of the activities which were presented during the visit included a Belgium one entitled,’ Dikke truiendag’ which translated means, ’Woolly jumper day’. It took place on the last day of their visit and involves turning down the heat in their school and homes by one degree. They all wear woolly jumpers to school, drink hot chocolate and celebrate the day in various ways. The French school told us about their recycling and their ‘Green Garden’ project among others whilst we displayed some of the work we are doing including a project which brings primary school children on an ecology field trip and making a film about recycling.
Of course it wasn’t all about power point presentations and planning meetings, there was time for some fun too! Our students gave a wonderful performance of Irish singing and dancing with various instruments including the harp, banjo, fiddle and the whistle. One of the Belgium students was a keen piper and the others taught us some of their national dances. There was a demonstration of Gaelic games and a game followed which was judged to have been a draw…but I’m not so sure! There were various trips and excursions which all had a learning theme but also meant that our visitors got to see lots of our beautiful country. A taste of Ireland was at hand from break time treats baked by our students to a five course gala dinner prepared and served by our home economics department. Our visitors said that they had never tasted anything like it! In the evening we gave them a taste of Irish culture where students, teachers and parents enjoyed singing, Irish set dancing and lots of craic!
Throughout the three days our teachers, students, parents and the whole community were on hand to plan, prepare and present all these wonderful experiences for our visitors. Without the energy and enthusiasm of the whole school community this unique event in our schools history could not have happened .It is a testament to the abilities and ‘can-do’ attitude of Lanesboro Community College that this visit was such a fantastic success. Our friends from Belgium and France have said they cannot wait to get back to visit our country and our area again…and that is testament to our town and our community. Well done to all involved!
