Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes 21st March 2011

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Leader Cup

The first round of the Leader Cup will take place on Saturday evening next 26th March when Rathcline seniors will take Mostrim in Clonbonny at 5.15pm. It will be great to see a huge crowd attending and supporting the lads.

This year more than any the team needs your support with the new relegation system coming into play at the end of the season, which puts pressure on every senior club, and with your support and the hard work of the team on the field the senior team will retain its status in the League and be right up there fighting for Leader Cup honours.

Active Age Daffodil Day

The annual Daffodil Day Coffee Morning will be held in St. Mary’s Parish Hall on Friday next 25th March from 11am to 1pm. You are invited to call in for a friendly chat and a decent cup of coffee. Your usual generous support will be most welcome.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The day was bright but a little chilly. The crowd lining the route was huge and the number of floats was a record and for the first time we had two bands – longford Pipe band and the Castlerea Brass and Reed band. These are the nuts and bolts of the St. Patrick’s Day parade that followed its traditional route from St. Faithleach’s GAA club to the Community College.

It does not tell the story of the time and effort that went into the preparation and hard graft from both the organising committee and those that put floats in the parade. The viewing platform hosted the dignitaries and also Eugene Murphy who in his own inimitable welcomed each float and made the very special. The parade has been a tremendous success since its inception and it is wonderful to see it going from strength to strength and shows a wonderful community spirit that makes everyone proud to be from Lanesboro Ballyleague. Those attending will remember many of the floats for their uniqueness and take away special memories. I would like to pay tributes to all that made our parade again a huge success and a parade to remember.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club

The club was delighted and excited to be awarded the prize for the ‘Most Original Float’ at the St. Patrick’s Day parade on Thursday last. The float was an anti-smoking float which drew lots of comment from the huge attendance and also caught the eye of the judges. Congratulations to all involved in the creation of the float and the many club members that took part with the club on the parade.

The minor club is involved in a project with the Irish Cancer Society and is one of the last nine in the country for special recognition.

Well done to our U14 squad who had a good win in the first match of the new season when they had a 4.14 to 7.4 win over St. Mel’s. The team plays its second game at home against Clonbroney on Sunday next at 12.30.

Sub Aqua Club Search and Rescue

Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club was conspicuous by its absence from the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and with every good reason. For the past number of days the sub aqua club has been involved in not one but two search and rescue operations in Ballina and Foxford. At the time of writing the searches in both Mayo towns are on-going and we hope for the families of those involved and our own search and rescue club for a breakthrough in the very near future.

The value of the Lough Ree Sub Aqua club is clear to be seen from their actions of the past week and much of their work each year goes unnoticed and unheralded. The club goes from strength to strength and must be congratulated on their incredible work.

If what they do is of interest to you I am sure any of the club members will gladly detail their work and the work you need to do to be a member of Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club.

Lanesboro Community Games

The Mixed Tag Rugby event in the Community games is one of the most enjoyable events to take part in. There are Under 11, Under 14 and Under 16 age groups. To facilitate a team for this event a local coach, David Lulham has offered to help out.  However we would need two parent managers per team.  If anyone is interested partaking in this or in co-orientating a team for this event, please contact Pauline Casey, Teresa Ryan, Joe Rooney or Sharon Brady.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Church Gate Collection.

Rathcline GAA

Our 1st Senior League game of the new season will take place this Saturday March 25th against Mostrim in Clonbonny at 5.15pm. Please check fixtures to confirm time. This will be the first senior game played on the new Prunty pitch. A lot of work has been done around Clonbonny by the community and it’s a credit to all involved. It would be great to see a large crowd for this match and it gives people the chance to see all the work which has been done in Clonbonny. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to our Reserve League 2 team who beat St. Patrick’s are on a score of 1-14 to 1-11. This is 3 wins out of 3 for the team which is a great achievement. Keep up the good work lads. Photos uploaded to Facebook. The next outing in this competition is against St. Columba’s in Clonbonny on 15th May; however this may change depending on the success of the County Under 21 Team. Please keep an eye on fixtures for more details.

For more information on collection depot or collection arrangements please contact any of the following players: Kevin Hanley, Alan Fayne, Ryan Fallon, Michael Hanley, Conor Casey or James Hanley.

Well done to everyone involved in the success of the St. Patricks Day Parade. Thank you to the club co-ordinators – Pat Connerton and Padraig Kenny for the trojan work put in preparing the float for the parade. A special thanks also to Chris Cullen for the loan of his equipment for the day. Pictures are up on the Facebook account for anyone who wants to view the day’s proceedings.

The annual County Board Punchestown racing festival is scheduled to take place May 4th this year. Once again it is Rathcline’s intention to fill as many tables as possible for the club. Anyone who is interested can make early contributions to Liam Connerton so as to avoid the last minute rush for tickets in the coming months.

Ballyboro FC

U14 – Ballyboro V Multyfarnham YC. Final Score 4-2.

Our U14 Team had a win at home to Multyfarnham on Sunday last. Team: A. Ward, S. Casey, S. Bannon, C. Cooper, J. Sweeney, O. O’Sullivan, G. Gallagher, S. Kenny, S. Phillips, E. Maguire, S. Costello. Subs: D. Curran, J. Kelly. Boro’s goals on the day were from Shane Phillips (2), Sean Costello (1) & Eugene Maguire (1).

U13 – Ballyboro V Kenagh United. Final Score 2-1.

Well done to our U13 Team who had a win away to Kenagh on Saturday last, finishing 2nd in the U13 Premier Division League. This was a great competitive game with both teams playing some fine football. A great team performance for Boro on the day with Keeper, Eran Farrell pulling off some cracking saves. Defence-line of Daniel Barry, Ryan Guinan, Max Zimarevs & Jack Irwin proved rock solid on the day with Sweeper, Conor Walton clearing many of Kenagh’s chances. Midfielders, Kevin Sorohan & Mikey Cox were in flying form for Boro & played some fantastic football. Wingers, Cian Gannon & Jonathon Hussey put in a great performance with Shane Phillips up-front giving it his all. Boro’s goals on the day were both cracking goals from Shane Phillips who was Man-of-the-Match.

U8 – Ballyboro V Ballymahon. Final Score 1-0

In a game that had it all, an astounded Ballyboro left empty handed after their best game of the season. Played in snow with a yellow ball required, both sides played excellent football in the opening half with Seadna Ryan outstanding for Boro, backed up by strong running from Evan Chalmers & Sean Kenny who was unlucky not to score. In the second-half Boro stormed the Ballymahon box with Brian Casey hitting the side netting twice, Sean Kenny being denied by the keeper from point blank range, Mark Dowd volleying off the outside of the post, the keeper touching a Chalmers drive onto the bar before he hit the bar again a minute later. Ballymahon gamely held on & in the final minute attacked with purpose from a Boro corner and scored with the last kick of the game. A sporting lesson for both sides was learned and full credit to both sides for an excellent spectacle.
