County Council Workers come to
Rescue

As usual
last Thursday the county council workers arrived in Lanesboro to carry out
their usual duties and shortly after their arrival they became aware of a swan
in distress on the middle of the road in the vicinity of the church. The two
men Hughie Keenan and Paul Menton quickly made their way to the stricken swan
and quickly gathered the bird who was in deep distress. The men brought the
bird back to the harbour behind the car park and released it where it took the
swan a few minutes to regain its composure before flying out onto the lake.
Both men must be complimented for their quick reaction and rescuing the swan
and they began the day with a good deed.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club

Under
14. The under 14 team had a thrilling encounter against Clonbroney in Clonbonny
on Sunday last. This was a wonderful performance by a very young side. It was a
brilliant to see a young team giving everything they had to the point of
exhaustion for the sake of their team mates. The disappointment etched on their
faces at the end of the game told its own story. The team mentors should be
rightly proud of their young charges and indeed these young men are a credit to
their parents and club.

Minors
– the minor game for Sunday has been rescheduled for this Wednesday night in
Kenagh at 8pm.

The
ASAP launch will take place in clubhouse on this Thursday night at 8pm. All
parents are invited.

U

attendance.

and the club wish him well.

Thanks, too, to the players who filled in at the last minute, as usual.

Well done to Orla Mc Entee and Mark Tiernan, Ballymahon, on their success in
taking 2nd place in the All-Ireland Pairs in Athlone on Sunday – a great

Bord na Mona Support for Ballyleague
Tidy Towns

After
picking up more than twenty additional points in last year’s National Tidy
Town’s adjudicator’s report the people of Ballyleague got a great boost this
week when Bord na Mona rowed in behind them with a major sponsorship package
that will ensure the grass is mowed regularly and the village kept in top class
condition in 2011.

Bord
na Mona Mount Dillon works Manager Paul Riordan and local man Danny Murray were
on hand in Ballyleague to hand over a cheque of support to Denis Dunne – the
Chairman of the Ballyleague Village Renewal & Tidy Town’s committee and voluntary
workers from throughout the Shannonside area who have invested in a new state
of the art ride-on lawnmower to ensure that hundreds of metres of grass is cut
on a regular basis along the approach roads to the beautiful village that is
hoping to increase its points again in the National Tidy Towns awards in 2011.

“We
would like to sincere thank Paul and Danny and their colleagues in Bord na Mona
for once again showing great support for the local community” Chairman
Denis Dunne said, “we have always known that Bord Na Mona is full square
behind our efforts to make this area very special and keep it clean and tidy.
This sponsorship is proof of the ongoing commitment of the Bord to the people
of this community.”

Denis
went on to outline details of a very ambitious programme of work for the
Ballyleague Village Renewal & Tidy Town’s Committee in the coming year.
“Our annual Spring clean is starting in the next couple of weeks”
Denis confirmed, “and we will be out and about on the side of the road,
collecting litter and cleaning up the area once again.” This year
Ballyleague Village Renewal and Tidy towns committee will have their state of
the art new mower at their disposal for the full season and it is hoped to cut
the grass on all approach roads from Strokestown and Roscommon. The group has
also targeted work on a new kerbed area alongside the stone wall and the
roadway opposite the national school in Ballyleague for a major programme of
work. “We hope to get as much support from the people of the community as
possible to prepare this new area for flowers, shrubs and grass again”
Denis Dunne says, “we will need manpower and woman power to get the job
done and we are appealing now for volunteers to come forward for the first
clean -up day which is on Saturday April 9th at 10am. It is hoped to have a clean-up
every Saturday at 10am and every Wednesday at 6-30pm during April. All
volunteers are asked to meet at the old Sliabh Ban Hotel and it is hoped
to provide gloves and bags for the litter. Anybody with earth-moving
equipment available would be especially welcome to assist with the work on the kerb
way along the roadside between the Sliabh ban hotel and the Church of the Holy
Rosary in Ballyleague.

After
a lot of hard work in the last 18 months the main road through Ballyleague is
now in top class condition and thanks to a lot of lobbying by the committee, a
brand new tarmacadam footpath has been put in place opposite St. Faithleach’s
GAA clubhouse which is already proving popular with pedestrians in the area.

The
Village Renewal & Tidy Town’s committee has appealed to residents to come
out and clean up the public areas alongside their own private residences during
the Spring clean in April and throughout the Summer. A lick of paint and a
general clean-up of walls and hedges would be very welcome and help to build on
the great work that was carried out last year when the derelict Sliabh Bawn
hotel was nicely painted by the committee

Apart
from the kind support of Bord Na Mona the local committee is indebted to
Roscommon county council for its on-going support. Special thanks to local
council staff who carry out great work every year and to Mr Kieran Madden and
his staff who ensured the new road through the village was completed properly
in 2010.

The
committee is hopeful that Roscommon county council will now work with them and
Waterways Ireland to help them put a new safe and secure fence in place along
the river Shannon banks adjacent to the old swimming pool in the coming year.
This area is very dangerous for children at the moment because of the state of
the fence and the county council has assured the committee that a new fence
will be erected. It is hoped this work can be complete by the County manager Mr
Frank Dawson and his staff before there is loss of life or serious injury
caused by the dangerous state of the old fence along the river. The county
manager has been made aware of the danger that is present.

The
Ballyleague Village Renewal and Tidy Towns committee only recently carried out
some fantastic hedge-cutting work on the Roscommon road and a special committee
is also looking at the future enhancement of the area where St. Faithleach’s
well is located on the Roscommon Road. A landscaping plan for the village is
also to be carried out in the coming weeks by a professional consultant and new
shrubs, trees and flowers will then be planted in areas that have been chosen
for enhancement.

“We
would like to thank all those who are helping us in a voluntary capacity”
Chairman Denis Dunne says, “but in 2011 we need more manpower and
womanpower to help carry out the physical work and we are appealing to lots
of new faces to turn up on Saturday April 9th at 10am for the first
clean-up session of the New Year. Remember the village belongs to all of us and
how it looks reflects on all of us when visitors pass through.”

If
you would like to help clean-up Ballyleague in the coming weeks or make a
private contribution to the workload please contact Denis at 0433321150 or e
mail the committee: keepballyleaguetidy@gmail.com
