Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes 9th May 2011

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Greatest
initiative ever for Longford

In
what, in my mind, is the greatest ever initiative for Longford County a number of
local business leaders with connections within the county or with family ties
to the county have launched Longford Business Angels Network. No superlatives
can be high enough for each of the 20 members that have pledged €50,000 each to
make up a fund of €1 million which is aimed at creating jobs in Longford
County.

The
courage and dedication of these 20 people has to commended and supported in
whatever way possible. Longford needs an injection of entrepreneurs with
business plans and ideas to avail of funding from this fund. If you are one of
those people that are looking to locate or have new business ventures in mind
that can be based in County Longford you should contact the Longford Business
Angels Network www.longfordbusinessangelnetwork.com

Many
congratulations to each and every member of the network and may their
inventiveness be individually rewarded a million times over. They are people of
courage, conviction and have the best interests of our county at heart and they
deserve the support and admiration of everyone.

In order to encourage and support potential entrepreneurs to come
forward and seek the significant seed capital available, a free seminar day
will be held in Longford on 30th May, 2011 at which Sean Gallagher,
entrepreneur and famous for his performances in the popular RTÉ programme
Dragon’s Den, will also be on hand to provide his invaluable advice and
assistance.

This is a tremendous opportunity for any local person with
sustainable project to present it to the Angels with the hope that they will be
able to avail of the available funding.

Shannon Gaels
Minor Club

Shannon
Gaels will host U8 Blitz on this Wednesday 11th May at 7.00pm with
Grattan Óg, St Mel’s & Clonguish Óg.

Our
U16’s were out in 2nd game of League on Thurs evening last against
Granard/Ballymore. It was a very disappointing evening with Granard coming out
convincing victors with a final scoreline of 2-4 to 6-10. Let’s hope we can
have a big improvement for next game which is against Ardagh on Thurs 12th
May in Clonbonny at 7:30pm.

Our
U14 squad played their last game in group against Grattan Óg in Clonbonny on
Friday evening last. Even though we got the result we needed it was a poor
performance by the team.  We have a lot
of work to do in the coming weeks if we are to progress.

Well
done to Aaron Madden and his team mates on Longford Minor panel on their
convincing victory over Wicklow on Saturday evening last in Pearse Park. Best
of luck in Leinster quarter final on Saturday evening next against Dublin in
Pearse Park.

Training
as usual for U6 to U12 in Clonbonny on Thursday.

We
wish the best of luck to Fermoyle and Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal in their respective
Cumann Na mBunscoil finals this week.

Well
done to Rathcline senior team who had a good win over Granard at weekend.

Community College Celebrations

As
you know Lanesboro Community College will celebrate 50 years of education on
Saturday 4th June. A large number of past pupils from far and wide
have expressed their interest in attending the celebrations. Two classes will
be especially honoured 1960 and also the year of the amalgamation with the
Convent of Mercy. A religious ceremony will be held in St. Mary’s Church at 3pm
followed by a function at the school afterwards. A wonderful evening of
nostalgia is in prospect.

There
have been several enquiries about accommodation in and around the town. It
would be greatly appreciated if people who had accommodation of any kind would
contact the college 043-33 21139 during school hours and give details. These
will then be passed on to those interested.

Cemetery Sundays

The
dates have now been set for Mass to be celebrated at the three cemeteries in
the parish of Rathcline in July.  Mass on
Sunday 3rd July Rathcline Cemetery at 6pm. Lanesboro Cemetery on 10th
July at 6pm and Clonbonny Cemetery on Sunday 17th July also at 6pm.

This
is ample notice for all those with relatives in each of the cemeteries to have
their family grave tended to and have it in good shape.

Lanesboro Badminton Club

We
would like to say well done to the three members of Lanesboro Badminton Team;
Edel Mc Dermott, Stephen Herraty and Gráinne Gallagher who travelled to
Baldoyle in Dublin to compete in the Individual Championships on Sunday the 1st
May, it was a long day with a lot of closely fought matches. Congratulations go
out to Gráinne Gallagher who won the Ladies Grade 6 singles and to Stephen
Herraty who was runner-up in the Men’s Grade 5 singles. That’s the end of the
matches for now which will probably be a relief to a lot of people, so rest
those aching muscles for next season.

Rathcline Ladies

The
Rathcline senior ladies continued their wonderful start to their season with a
comprehensive win over Drumlish in Drumlish on a scoreline of 3-14 to 2-8. The
girls are shaping up very well this season and let’s hope their excellent form
continues throughout the season.

Lough Ree AC

Competition
in Track & Field athletics has really come in with a bang! Ten days ago
there was the Roscommon championship for the U9, U10 and U11 age groups in
Lanesboro. Since then the Parish of Rathcline had its annual Community Games on
Tuesday last and the Kilgefin Parish – Ballyleague had their Community Games on
Sunday at St. Faithleach’s GAA grounds.

The
Primary Schools Sports Day which always unearths new talent will take place on
this Wednesday, weather permitting. If this is not enough competition, a new
two county fixture Longford and Roscommon
is set for the tartan track at Athlone IT  on this Thursday evening for the U12 age
group and upwards. Is this not too much too soon!

Looking
back on last week’s notes we find that Anthony Jordan’s results were omitted.
The Tarmonbarry talented youngster won the U8 sprint and U9 Long Jump. Well
done Anthony. On the same day the accolade of ‘athlete of the meet’ must surely
go to Bryn Peters winning two gold and two silver medals in the four events
that were open to him.

Rathcline GAA

Well
done to the senior team on their win over Granard in Clonbonny last Saturday
evening. The match finished 0-13 to 1-05 to Rathcline. Well done lads. Thanks
to everyone who turned out to support the team. Photos from the game have been
uploaded to Facebook. The team have a break now for a couple of weeks and next
up will be Colmcille. Please keep an eye on fixtures for more details.

The
club would like to thank everyone who contributed to the recent Scrap Metal
Collection. Thanks to all the players who gave a lot of their time to the very
successful event.

The
players’ fundraising committee are organising a sponsored climb of Croagh
Patrick this Saturday 14th May for all players. A contribution will
be made to the St. Mary’s Church Refurbishment Fund. We would appreciate your
generous support for this fundraiser.

Ballyboro FC

Every
now & then, in sport, you’ll hear someone say it doesn’t get any better
than this & if you were a Ballyboro supporter in Abbeycartron on a glorious
Bank Holiday Monday it was probably you. What a day, in that we had three teams
competing, but in completing the treble was just magical for all concerned.
First up were the U8s who confounded all in the past month. Averaging a goal a
game they suddenly found their form in overcoming the top teams when it
mattered. Evan Chalmers long range shot against Raharney in a 1-1 draw turned
the season followed by a Brian Casey hat-trick against Melview which brought
them back to Raharney where Mark Dowd hit the winner and on to the semi-final
where a Chalmers hat trick and Casey strike put them into the final against
Erne Valley.

U8
Major Final. Ballyboro V Erne Valley. Final Score 4-2 In a cracking final Erne
Valley stormed Ballyboro in the opening minutes with free flowing football and
superb defending from Séadhna Ryan and John Reilly had Boro hanging on. Erne
Valley pressed on and scored a cracker. From the tip, an Evan Chalmers rocket
somehow found the net & Boro surged on. Mark Dowd won a free which Chalmers
planted right on Brian Casey’s head for the lead. Valley regained their composure
and fingertips save from Jack Tucker kept them ahead till half-time. Boro in
the 2nd half took control with Ultan Sullivan backing up the superb Ryan. John
Mc Loughlin then set up Casey who rifled his second goal into the bottom
corner. Sean Kenny then won a free on the edge of the box which Player of the
Tournament, Evan Chalmers sent to the top corner to secure victory. Conor
Sorohan and David Sweeney replaced the tired limbs at midfield as Boro conceded
a late goal. Shock and joy on the Ballyboro faces at the finish on a remarkable
year. Huge Congratulations to all players on the panel along with their
Manager/Mentors, Stephen Dowd & Robert Chalmers.

Ballyboro
Lions 3 Delvin 0

The
Lions finished as league champions for the third year in a row after a
brilliant performance in Abbeycarton on Bank Holiday Monday.

Delvin
started strongly but the Lions goalkeeper Dylan Donlon and the defence of
Michael Dunne, Nathan Donlon, and P.J. Connaughton in excellent form weathered
the storm.

Midway
through the first half the Lions took the league with a great goal from Cian
O’Brien which was set up by good work from Sean Horgan.

The
Lions were beginning to get on top now, due in no small way to the performance
of James Browne in the middle of the park and he duly scored the second goal
after a neat through ball from Keelan Gallagher.

The
Lions wrapped up the game when Liam Ormsby thumped home the third after good
work by Evan Chalmers.

Well
done to all the players as they continue their amazing record of never having
lost a game since they started at under 7.

Captain
Liam Ormsby received the cup and James Browne was awarded ‘player of the
tournament’.

U-11
Major Final. Ballyboro V Ballymahon. Final Score 1-1(Ballyboro win on Penalty
Shoot Out) Last game of the day & last seven-a-side game for a Ballyboro
outfit that played in three finals in four years and came up against the only
team they had never beaten. Ballyboro were on fire in the opening exchanges and
following back-to-back corners. Philip Chalmers found Jack Magan who set up
Connell Kennelly who finished with aplomb from outside the box. Jordan Donlon
and Jack Magan went close before Ballymahon scored from a free, to tie it up at
half time. In the 2nd half, both defences dominated with Pauric Halpin and
Niall Casey outstanding and neither keeper bothered until Donlon was brought
down in the box but Ballymahon keeper brought off a tremendous save. Into
extra-time Ballyboro pushed on and following excellent footwork Philip Chalmers
was in the clear only to clip the ball wide, Kennelly and Magan shot from long
range for Fox to collect. Final five minutes Ballymahon played all the football
and Michael O’Donnell brought off the save of the season when he somehow got a
touch to a match winning drive and sent it onto the bar. Penalty shootout time
and memories flashed back to both teams which were denied in previous years.
Boro looked more convincing and when Player of the Tournament, Jordan Donlon,
crashed home the winning penalty the perfect day was complete for the Boro,
their Manager and Chairman Robert Chalmers and the large support present. Huge
Congratulations to all players on the panel along with their Manager/Mentor, Robert
Chalmers.

Finally
it is important to note that the organisation for the victory parade was top
class, with three teams parading the town it brought back memories for many of
the parents of olden times. As always many thanks for the huge support over the
year and for making the Club what it is. C’mon de Boro.
