Lanesboro Community College Celebrates
this Saturday
An
extraordinary number of past pupils have expressed their interest in attending
the 50th celebrations of Lanesboro Community College on Saturday
next 4th June. The school has been a remarkable success story since
its inception and hit has maintained the highest of standards to this present
day.
We
congratulate school Principal Jimmy Flanagan and his staff on this great
occasion and we wish them the fullest support going forward.
We
welcome each and every past pupil and their family back to town and we are sure
that many a trip down memory lane will take place and many a friendship will be
renewed.
The
weather for this week is forecast to be hot and it is fitting that the sun will
be shining on the celebrations and we wish everyone a wonderful day.
The
following is the schedule for the day
1.00pm
Meal
in marquee for class of 1960, followed by unveiling of plaque commerating 50
years in assembly hall. (W. Dennigan)
3.00pm
Mass
in St. Mary’s church.
4.00pm
Welcome
address in school by Jimmy Flanagan. Then a teacher representing each decade
will give a brief glimpse of life in our school at that time. T. Moloney, M.
Lennon, M. Gill, Sr. Judith, M Lyons. Rosemary Johnston CEO will speak.

will all take place outside, weather permitting)
Unveiling
of plaque in honour of Bart Clancy. (P. Clancy)
A
hot buffet will then be available in the marquee. Tea/coffee and light snacks
will be available at various points around the grounds.
The
assembly hall will have displays of memorabilia, photographs and slideshows.
There will also be music/Irish dance.
Students
will be available to bring people on tours of the school.
The
school bands will provide entertainment throughout the afternoon.
A
representative of the class of 1960, the 1st year class of 1989 and
the leaving cert class of 2011 will each plant a tree to mark this great
occasion.
Please note:
There
will be a Remembrance Book for deceased staff and students in the assembly hall
and guests are invited to enter their thoughts/memories.
A
Visitors Book will be available and it is hoped that as many people as possible
will sign this.
Cemetery Sundays
The
dates have now been set for Mass to be celebrated at the three cemeteries in
the parish of Rathcline in July. Mass on
Sunday 3rd July Rathcline Cemetery at 6pm. Lanesboro Cemetery on 10th
July at 6pm and Clonbonny Cemetery on Sunday 17th July also at 6pm.
This
is ample notice for all those with relatives in each of the cemeteries to have
their family grave tended to and have it in good shape.
Wedding
The
marriage took place on Saturday 7th May at Cill Éinde, An Spidéal
Co. na Gaillimhe of Miriam Nohilly, daughter of Tom and Margaret Nohilly,
Rathcline Road, and Brendan Mc Donagh, son of Kevin & Chris Mc Donagh, The
Walk, Roscommon Town. Matron of honour was Ruth O’Callaghan, sister of the
bride and bridesmaid was Michelle Walsh, friend of the bride. Bestman was Enda
Mc Donagh, brother of the groom and groomsman was Seamus Kelly, friend of the
groom. Pageboy was Finian Murtagh nephew of the groom and Flower girl was Faith
Nohilly, niece of the bride. The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr Seamus
Nohilly, SMA, uncle of the bride assisted by Fr. Micheál Nohilly SMA, uncle of
the bride and Fr. Michael Reilly, PP, Lanesboro. The wedding reception was held
in The Westwood Hotel, Galway.
Final Whist Games of the Season
The
final Lanesboro Social Services Whist game of the season will take place on
this Friday night 3rd June in St. Mary’s Parish Hall at 8.30pm. As
this is the final game of the season it is hoped that a huge number of card
players will turn out to finish off the season in style and help support the
most wonderful committee in our parish. The committee does so much unseen work
throughout the year in supporting so many it is very important that we as a
community give them our backing to ensure that their work and support continues
undaunted. Never has a committee meant so much to so many and it is only
through our support that they can continue their marvellous work.
Ladies Mini
Marathon Bus
The
bus will leave Derryhaun crossroads at 10am, Ballymahon at 10.15am and St.
Joseph’s Hospital, Longford at 10.30am for the Dublin City Mini Marathon on
Monday 6th June. Presently there are only 9 seats left on the bus

Lanesboro
Tourism Co-op-Tidy Towns Competition -The judging for the annual Tidy Towns
Competition commences in the coming weeks .A community clean-up is organised
for Friday evening 10 June starting at 6pm with volunteers meeting at the
Parish Hall. If you have a free hour on this evening, please come along and
bring a paint brush or yard brush or spade/shovel with you. A number of jobs
have been identified which can be done on the evening with your help. A copy of
last year’s Tidy Towns Report is on display in O’Briens shop window and can be
collected in the Church porch. Your help will make a huge difference to our
town.
Lanesboro
Community Games
Since
our last update, there has been great activity in Community Games Events.
It is wonderful to see so many children taking part and parents facilitating
them in representing Lanesboro at a county level. However none of this would be
possible without the considerable work of team managers in taking on, training
and looking after teams and we want to thank them so much for this.
For
the first time Lanesboro fielded teams in the Tag Rugby and Futsal
competitions. Robbie Chalmers managed the Boys U-13 Futsal team who were
narrowly beaten by Killashee in the county final Thursday 2th May. Cora
Nevin and Pauline Casey facilitated two teams with 24 children taking part in
the county tag rugby event at the Longford rugby club. This proved to be
great fun. Though the teams lost out to strong Killoe teams, it certainly
will be an event that the children would like to take part in again.
Thanks again to Robbie, Cora and Pauline and David Lulham and with the
help of additional parents, additional teams could be fielded next year.
The
U-10 football team had a fantastic journey of success to reach the County
Final. Firstly over 20 children travelled to Drumlish, with no great
expectations of going further, but they came home victors. Following this
win, Lanesboro had to take on a strong Killoe team in the semi-final.
This was hosted in Lanesboro and the team gave the supporters a lot to cheer
about. It was great to see children, who are still so young being able to
play football so fluidly. Lanesboro, having won against Killoe, proceeded
to the trophy final in Pierce Park versus Longford South on Wednesday
18th. This was a very daunting occasion for the young players and
Longford South got a great start which proved too difficult for Lanesboro
overcome. However, every member of the Lanesboro team played brilliantly and
each and every one chased the game until the very end. At the end they were
just two points short. Though there was disappointment in the final, the
silver Longford Community Games Medals and the experience of having played at
Pierce Park will ensure that this great run of success will be remembered by
those children for a long time. The run of success and display of skills is a
great credit to their trainers Padraic Farrell and Seadna Ryan who undertook
this on top of the their busy GAA schedule, this is very much
appreciated.
Finally
on Sunday 22nd May, the County Swimming Finals took place. Lanesboro
had strong representation, started off by gold medal wins by both Dúileach Ryan
and Séadhna Ryan in the boys U-8 and U-10 25M Freestyle events,
respectively. Drama was yet to come when Orla Ryan lined up for Lanesboro
in the girls U-10 freestyle final. Orla swam a great race to finish
joint first with a Longford South swimmer. The race was re-run in order
to determine who would represent Longford at the All-Ireland Finals. For
a second time the two girls could not be split. In the third re-run Orla
lost out by the tightest of margins. This was a great performance by all
three swimmers.
The
next event that will take place is the Track and Field County Finals in
Ballymahon. The Lanesboro Entries, with children’s signatures, need to be
returned to the county Committee by June 7th. Therefore
children, who won a gold medal in the Lanesboro Community Games, need ensure
that they contact Pauline Casey or Teresa Ryan, to sign up for the County
Finals. Where the winner of the event has not signed up to take part, the
runner up in that event will be asked to take their place. Best of luck
to all the entries to the finals. With the great Athletics Club training,
we will be well prepared for Ballymahon in late June.
Death
It
was with great shock and sadness we learned on Friday 20th May of
the death at Roscommon County Hospital, Roscommon of Jimmy Malone, Cloonadra.
Jimmy had spent his working life away from his home parish, mainly as a nurse
in St. Davnet’s Hospital, Monaghan where he spent many years. Following his retirement
he moved to Donegal where he enjoyed life on the sea where he had a boat and
took people out on fishing trips. Jimmy was a mild mannered and pleasant man
and memory always reminds me of a man totally relaxed while smoking his pipe.
He was a man of great wit and in times past liked nothing more than a good
music session where his party piece was The Ferryman. Wherever Jimmy went he endeared
himself to so many people and his passing leaves emptiness in the hearts of
everyone that had the pleasure to know him.
His
remains were removed from his residence to The Church of the Holy Rosary on
Wednesday for his funeral Mass and following his Mass his remains were laid to
rest in Cloontuskert Cemetery. To his wife Geraldine, sons Paul and Aidan,
daughters Barbara, Sarah and Linda, brother Mike, relatives and many friends we
extend our deepest sympathy.
Lanesboro Bridge
Club
The
Annual General Meeting and Prize Giving of Lanesboro Bridge Club took place on
Wednesday 25th May. Prizes for the two major competitions during the
year were presented by club President Maura Hanly. Pairs Competition –
Bernadette Gillen, Marie Sheeran and Mary Mc Gushin, 2nd Kathleen
Reilly & Tom Feeney, 3rd Loretto Cooney. 1st session
winners Una Lawlor & Brid Mc Dermot, 2nd session winners Gemma
Douglas & Elish Gray.
The
President’s Prize, a beautiful canteen of Newbridge cutlery was won by the club
secretary – a very popular win. 2nd prize, Mary Casey, 3rd
Joint winners Phil Chalmers & Tom Feeney. 1st session winner Una
Lawlor and 2nd session winners Renee Walsh.
A
magnificent array of prizes awaited those who played on the night followed by a
tea party organised by Gemma. Hostesses on the night were Katherine Harrison
& Philomena Walsh.
On
Thursday 26th The club members travelled to Glasson Village
Restaurant where they had a wonderful meal and night.
The
new committee has duly been elected for the coming year and current president Maura
Hanly welcomed incoming president for the coming year Mona O’Flaherty.
The
new season will commence in St. Mary’s Parish Hall, Lanesboro on Wednesday 7th
September where the club will be delighted to welcome new members as well as
all the present members for what is hoped to be another excellent year of
Bridge playing.
Summer
Bridge competition commences in Sorohan’s Ballyleague on Wednesday 8th
June and will continue every Wednesday at 8pm
In
recent days the club has lost two of its members: Mary Mullooly was a member
for many years and in recent times was club president. She loved her bridge and
was a very keen player. Bernard Kyne was also a member and he also loved his
game of 25. He always said “when I wake on Wednesday mornings I felt happy in
the knowledge that I had the game of bridge to look forward to that night”.
Both
players will be sadly missed in the club. Club President Mona O’Flaherty and
the club members extend their sincere sympathy to both families.
Death
The
entire area was shocked and saddened when the news broke of the sudden death
oat her residence in Killinure of Mary Mullooly on Saturday 21st May.
Mary a native of Myshall, Co. Carlow was predeceased by her husband Jimmy and
son James. Mary was a lady of gentle manner; she was a wonderful lady whose softly
spoken words always warmed the heart of everybody that had the pleasure to know
her. She liked nothing more than a game of bridge which she played weekly with
the two local clubs. Her passing will leave a huge void in the hearts and minds
of everybody that had the pleasure to know her. She was a wonderful lady and
friend.
Her
remains were removed from her residence on Monday last to St. Mary’s Church,
Lanesboro and her remains were laid to rest following Requiem Mass on Tuesday
in Rathcline cemetery. To her daughters Ann, Catherine and Marie, sons, Peter
and Joe, brother and sister, relatives and wide circle of friends we extend our
deepest sympathy.
Shannon Gaels
Minor Club
The
Minor Club would like to wish all members well in the Leaving and Junior Cert
exams in the coming weeks.
U12’s
were away in Abbeylara on Thursday evening last. A very enjoyable evening was
had by all.
Shannon
Gaels will host this week’s U12 Blitz on Thursday 2nd June at 7.00pm
in Clonbonny where we will be joined by 13 other Clubs. Any volunteers willing to help out would be
greatly appreciated.
U10’s
are away in Abbeylara on Wednesday 1st June at 7.00pm for All County
Blitz.
U13
League starts on Tuesday next 7th June when we are away to Slashers.
There
will be no underage training this week.
Ice-Cream Party
Invitation
The
Down Syndrome Ireland HB Ice-Cream Fun day will be held at the duck pond area
(behind car park) on this Sunday 5th June commencing at 2pm.
What
promises to be an amazing day includes the wonderful and very popular local music
group ‘Acting the Maggot’ , The HB Roadshow, face painting, bouncing castles,
inflatable bull ride, bungee run and the Hunky Dory Buffalo.
You
are all invited to what should be a fun filled and action packed day. The day
is sponsored by Ventura Promotions, Ballyleague, Dolan Foods (HB) and Hunky
Dory (Largo Foods).
The
day will kick off at 2pm and there will be free Ice-cream and Hunky Dory’s.
Ducks and Geese
to be Removed
According
to a letter seen from the National Parks and Wildlife Service they have proposed
that the domestic geese and ducks presently on the Shannon in the vicinity of
the bridge be removed as it is not permitted to have them there. The Parks and
Wildlife have asked that they be placed in a more suitable area as they are
having a negative impact on the local environment. They have sought a meeting
with Dan Kavanagh, keeper of the ducks and geese, to discuss the situation.
Death
The
entire area was saddened and shocked to learn of the death of Bernie Kyne,
Ballyleague on Monday 23rd May. Bernie was predeceased only five months
to the date by his wife Maureen. He was a man tall in stature and big in heart.
Bernie was a school teacher until his retirement and his legacy in the school
system is legendary. In his younger day Bernie was a noted footballer both with
his club and his county. In recent times he liked nothing better than a game of
cards and was a regular at all the local clubs games. Bernie was a friendly
warm man with a wonderful sense of community. His untimely passing has left our
communities are all the poorer. The attendance at the reposing of his remains
at his residence and again at the removal to the Church of the Holy Rosary for
his Funeral Mass and burial to Cloontuskert cemetery was both large and
representative. To his sons Enda, Declan, Jarlath and Oliver, brothers Jimmy
and Fr. Val, sisters Anne-Jane and Gabrielle, relatives and many friend we
would like extend our sincere sympathy.
Lough Ree 2000
Bridge Club
It
is with sadness that we say goodbye to one of our older Bridge players in
Lanesborough today. Mary Mullooly passed away peacefully on Saturday morning.
May she rest in peace. Mary was always a gentle lady in life, and she was
definitely so, at the Bridge table.
She will be greatly missed by her family. Ann Donlon, her daughter, wife of
J.J. is Treasurer of our Club. Margaret Gillen was Mary’s Bridge partner, and
they had a game last Thursday night.
Our condolences to all her family.
Later, today we heard of the passing of one of our members Bernie Kyne. Bernie
started playing after retiring from teaching. He was a great card player and
enjoyed the game.
To all Bernie’s family, we extend our sincere sympathy at this time.
It is so soon after Maureen’s passing. May they all rest in peace.
Our thoughts and prayers go to Mary Belton, also, who has been teaching in our
parish for many years, on the passing of her mother, Nora. Rest in peace. Both
Nora and Mary play in Templemichael on Wednesday nights.
Boro Celtic
The
management and players would like to thank all those who offered their support
both throughout the season and at the recent cup final played in Mullingar. The
cup final played at the Mullingar Town home pitch against Longford Wanderers
was a fast and exciting game that produced some excellent performances from
both sides. After a frenetic first half the sides were locked at 2-2. The second
half started in the same vein however it was Longford Wanderers who got the
next goal and ran out 4-3 winners. That brought to a close our 2010/2011 season
which seen Boro Celtic finish third in the league having also contested the
Division 1 cup semi-final unsuccessfully against Shinrone Utd. Overall a good
season with hopefully much more to come in the future.
Sunday night Card Game
The
weekly 25 card game in the Peer Inn took place on Sunday night last and the
winners were; 1st P.J. and Bridie Glennon, 2nd Joe Rooney
& Tom Skelly. The table prizes were won by Joe Dolan and Edmund, and Danny
Ganly and Seamus Bermingham.
Sympathy
We
would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Mary Belton, teacher in Fermoyle
Primary School on the death of her mother Mrs Nora Duignan, Longford town last
week.
Ballyleague Village Renewal
The
moment of truth is nearly here in the 2011 National Tidy Towns Competition. In
the next two weeks the adjudicators will be arriving to study approach
roads, footpaths, green areas, flower beds, front walls and estates and
the Ballyleague Village Renewal & Tidy Towns committee is doing its best to
try and make sure the village is spick and span. Every Wednesday and Saturday
since April the committee has been out and the work continues every
Wednesday at 6.30pm and every Saturday at 10am. The meeting point is still the
old Sliabh Bawn Hotel.
Last year the village received an increase of 19 points in the Tidy Towns
competition so a major push is on in the next two weeks to match that progress
in 2011. We all know there is tremendous community spirit in this community but
sometimes we leave it to others to fly the flag – but this week we need your help.
If your front wall needs a lick of paint please do it this week! If the grass
verge outside your house along the road is uncut – please cut it this week! If
there is litter near your home please have it removed.
The voluntary committee continues to cut the grass on all the
approach roads with our new Bord Na Mona sponsored ride-on lawnmower but
we need your help. If you have an hour to spare this week and could help us out

Night Out: St. Faithleachs GAA Club present the ‘Looney Hoppers’ on Saturday

Bottle of Brandy, Bottle of Whiskey and many more. All monies raised go towards

Lough Ree Golfing Society
The
society had one its most successful days on Saturday last at the exquisite
local Roscommon Golf Course.
The
occasion was the competition for our Captain, Sean Brennan’s wonderful Prize.
An eclectic group of golfers from Lanesborough and its surrounds took part in
this competition and I think most of them enjoyed the challenge of this very
pleasant course!!
The
weather was excellent, the course was in tip top condition, the greens were
second to none and an enjoyable day’s golf was had by all. The society would
like to thank Roscommon Golf Club for a most enjoyable day. The catering in the
bar afterwards was also of the highest standard: thank you all.
The
prize winners were as follows: Nearest the pin on the 16th was Oliver Murphy.
The Ladies prize was won by Marie Simpson with 29 points. Front nine was won by
our captain Sean Brennan with 20 points for the nine holes and the back nine
was won by John James O’Shea with 16 points.
4th
prize was won by John Gunne with 33 points, 3rd was Gerard Heneghan with 34
points 2nd was Aidan Cassidy with 38 points and the winner of Sean Brennan’s
lovely prize was Frank Conmy with 46 points(an unusual score and one he is
unlikely to repeat, but you never know!!)
Well
done to all who won and to all who competed: you are all winners. Looking
forward to seeing you all at our next outing to one of the best courses in the
midlands: Mullingar Golf Course on Friday the 15th July. The society is also
planning an outing to Longford Golf course on Wednesday the 29th June which is
an open day. Please forward you names (teams of 3 if possible) to Frank, at
0879730611 as soon as possible for the Longford outing as places will have to
book in advance on the open time sheet in Longford. The society can book from
10 am onwards. Players can compete for the open and society prizes for the one
entry fee. The secretary will enter your teams with Longford as soon as they
are received. Keep swinging.
Rathcline GAA
Hard
luck to the senior team who were beaten by Colmcille in the league at the
weekend.
The
Reserve League 2 team are away to St. Marys Granard this Saturday 4th June at
6.30pm. The team will be looking to make it 6 wins out of 6. Please come along
and support the lads where they hopefully will maintain their great win record.

For the first time in recent years
Clonbonny is set to hold 1st round games in the Senior Championship. The first
match of the championship will take place in Clonbonny between Longford
Slashers and Cashel on Friday 10th June at 8pm. There will be a lot of
preparation work to be done leading up to this match and as the date is fast approaching
all help would be greatly appreciated.
