Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes Monday 6th June 2011

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Community College Celebrations

Celebrations
will come and celebrations will go but the celebrations of Saturday last at
Lanesboro Community College were one of the finest ever held in the area. The
hot weather of the previous days had abated a little and it made the day all
the more pleasurable for the events that were about to unfold during the day.

During
the week leading up to Saturday the tidy towns committees, on both sides of the
bridge, were engaging in their tremendous work and both Ballyleague and
Lanesboro were looking as beautiful as ever it looked on Saturday last. The
town was further enhanced on Saturday morning with the arrival on the Main
Street of huge flower and tree boxes which brought even greater beauty to the
town.

From
early in the day it was obvious that there was going to be a massive attendance
as many familiar faces of old started to reappear on the street as they stepped
the steps, taken during the their school years, as they made their way in the
direction of the school. What a surprise they were in for when they arrived at
the school as it never has looked in such tremendous condition. A large tent
was also on site to cater for the expected crowd and, by God, did the past
pupils honour their alma mater in style by turning out in a massive number. The
attendance of such a vast number of past pupils is testimony to the high esteem
in which the school in the hearts of all.

Are you available for a few hours during
this week?

Rathcline
GAA have been privileged to be asked to host the opening round of this year’s
Longford Senior Championship where county champions will open the defence of
their title with a game against Cashel in Clonbonny at 8pm on Friday next.

The
committee are asking everyone that has an hour or two to spare to come to the
club grounds any evening to help get the club grounds in pristine condition for
this great night. Every skill will be welcome and the club urges you to come
along.

Apart
from the supporters of both sides it is hoped that the local people of the
parish and surrounds will also come out and join in what should be a marvellous
occasion. This is history in the making for the club as it is the first time
the club has been asked to host a championship event. Where possible locals are
asked to walk to the pitch or park a distance from the pitch as with parking at
a premium it will be essential that the clubs neighbours in Clonbonny and along
the ‘line road’ are not inconvenienced in anyway in case any emergency vehicles
may have to travel these roads.

We
wish the club every success and also wish both clubs a hearty welcome to
Lanesboro and hope their teams do themselves justice on the night.

Some dog owners
don’t care!

Time
and time again I have mention in these missives about the amount of dog
excrement on the streets, paths and walkways of our area. Have the dog owners
that allow their dogs soil these areas no concern or civic spirit for others
using these areas? Do they not know the enormous health issues that are involved
if children or indeed adults happen to get it on their bodies? We are into the
tourism season; it should be no different in any other season, and the need to
have our villages looking inviting to those that come for a day at the river or
those that are cruising on the river is vital to the local community. The last
thing we need is for our visitors to join in local pursuit of dodge the dog
excrement.

Perhaps
the owners of the dogs that are soiling the street, do not see these notes and
I would urge everybody in our entire area to make it a topic of conversation in
the hope that those who do not abide by the law of cleaning up the dog
excrement may think again before allowing it to happen on our streets, paths
and walkways of the area.

Pooper
Scoopers can be purchased locally in supermarkets as a minimal cost and I would
urge that they be purchased and the dog excrement be disposed of responsibly.

Helen Goes For
Gold

Rathcline
local, Helen Feeney from Rathcline, Lanesboro, daughter of Packie and Ann
Feeney, Rathcline, is looking for the support of her home county in a quest to
be chosen as the Golden Pages Golden
Wedding Planner,
giving a commitment to donate an amount of her prize money
to Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland (SBHI) if she wins the nationwide
competition.

Earlier
this month, Grainne Howley from Kilkenny and Matthew Donnellan from Dublin were
picked as the Golden Pages Golden Couple, where they won a wedding to the value
of €30,000. The second part of the contest is for wedding planners, whereby
entrants are invited to create a themed day for the couple.

Helen
needs hundreds of Facebook votes in order to make it to the second and final
round, where she will be in the running for a €30,000 bar of gold with her
theme “Ferrero Rocher: Luxury and Decadence with a little Nutty Side”.

“Simply
put, I decided to enter this competition because I thought it would be a good
distraction from the constant economic doom and gloom, not to mention a fun and
romantic project to get involved in. I also liked the idea of supporting
indigenous Irish suppliers – including those in the Midlands and the West of
Ireland– as part of the planning process for my wedding day.

“There
is a more serious side to my entry as I’ve committed to donating a sum of money
to Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland if I win. The reason I have chosen this
charity is because one of the daughters of the wedding couple has Spina Bifida
and personally speaking, I think it is one of the lesser known Irish charities
doing amazing work for its large number of members,” said Helen.

Helen
is currently in third place and is looking for your support to boost her votes.
People should visit http://challenge.goldenpages.ie, go to the
Planners section and then follow the link to Helen’s wedding plan, where they
can click “Like” and “Share” through their own or a
friend’s Facebook page.
