Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes Monday 11th July 2011

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

This Saturday Triathlon Day

All
preparations are now in place for what should be a feast of sport in Lanesboro Ballyleague
on Saturday next 16th July when the local triathlon club hosts its inaugural
Triathlon. It is a testimony to the standard of the club members that less than
one year since the inception of the club they are hosting the ‘Two Provinces Sprint
Triathlon’.

The triathlon will commence at 10am with the swimmers
taking to the water for a 750m swim, followed by 20 Km on the bike as far as
Scramogue cross and back and then to complete the event with a 5 Km run into
the quarry and out onto the Rathcline Road, up towards Rathcline crossroads and
back down through Main Street to the finishing line in the car park. Registration
will take place in the co-op hall on Friday evening 15th July between
7 pm and 9 pm and on Saturday July 16th between 8.30 am and 9.30 am.

It
is hoped that there will be a huge crowd of locals out to spectate and support
the contestants. There are many vantage points and the day should be a
marvellous one for the entire community.

Death

The
entire region was shocked and saddened with the sad news on Friday 1st
July of the death following an accident of Niall Reddin, The Green. Niall in
the early stages of life, only 36 in February, has a long future ahead of him
before this tragic accident took him from us much too soon. He was a man big in
stature and his gentle manner endeared him to everyone that had the pleasure to
know him. He was a very affable young man and was regularly seem walking the
family dog either on the track or down town. Niall will be sadly missed as the huge
attendance at his removal from Farrell’s Funeral Home on Tuesday last to St.
Mary’s Church and again at his Funeral Mass and interment in Clonbonny cemetery
on Wednesday bore testimony to. To his father Vincent, mother Ellen, brother
Darragh, girlfriend Treasa, relatives and many friends we extend our heartfelt
sympathy.

Cemetery Sunday continues in Clonbonny

The
final Cemetery Mass will take place in Clonbonny Cemetery on Sunday 17th
July at 6pm. To-date there has been large attendances at the previous two
masses in Rathcline and Lanesboro cemeteries.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club

The
club would like to extend its deepest sympathy to our club treasurer Brendan
Keane and his family on the death of his father John Keane, Cloontuskert on
Sunday last.

The
minor team had their championship match v Southern Gaels and at the time of
writing there are no scores to hand.

Under
13 team will play St. Francis on Friday night next in Clonbonny in a crucial
game at 7.30pm

Launch and Reading

Lasraí Writers Group
invites you to an evening of readings from their newly published anthology
“Kindlings” which will be launched by Jack Harte in Lanesboro Library on this Thursday
14th July at 8pm. As part of the Lough Ree Environmental Summer
School and Arts Festival.

Death

The death took place on
Thursday 7th July of Mary Claire Casey, Lisnacusha following a short
illness. Mary Claire in her 89th year had in recent times had been
living with her family in Limerick. She had been predeceased some years back by
her husband James. She was a hard working lady and she had a warm and friendly
disposition. Her passing will leave a void in the hearts and minds of those
that knew her. Her remains were removed from Limerick to St. Mary’s Church
Lanesboro on Saturday last. Following her Funeral Mass her remains were laid to
rest in Clonbonny cemetery. To her son Joseph, daughter Cecelia, granddaughter
Caroline, brothers Tommy, Rathcline Road, and Paddy Joe, sister Colette,
relatives and friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Lough Ree AC

The All-Ireland Athletic
Championships for the older age groups (under 12 to 19) took place on Saturday and
Sunday last in Tullamore.

Dean O’Reilly and Rebecca
Stauvse had qualified from the Connaught Finals in the Under 12 Ball throw.
Dean had taken a silver medal at the Longford Community Games Finals in the
same event but was not to figure in the medals on Saturday. Rebecca fared
better and got to the final where she had an extra 3 throws. This young Latvian
lass did impress. She had her best effort with her final throw, knew the
distance, knew what the winning throw was and that she was the best of the Connaught
girl. In short, she was well clued in to what was going on.

Sunday saw three club
members in Tullamore, Orla Duffy and Larissa Noone in the Under 13 Shot and Enda
Berga for the Under 16 javelin. Orla still managed still managed to stay ahead
of Larissa but neither figured in the final stages.

Worse was to befall Enda
in the Javelin. The clubs Connaught Champion was to learn that her even was on
Saturday! She was bitterly disappointed and the club offers its apology for the
error.
