Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Birth

Congratulations
to Gavin and Susan Greally, Cashelbeg on the birth last week of a baby boy.

Sympathy

We
would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Patricia Keane her husband Sean
and family, Clonbonny, on the death of her brother Francis Toner in Dublin at
the weekend. Francis was born and raised on the Green by his parents Frank and
the late Mary Toner. Frank came to work in Bord na Mona was one of the founders
of hurling in Lanesboro and gave so much of his time to us as youngsters
growing up in Lanesboro. The hurling legacy of Frank and Tom Mc Grath will
always be remembered by everyone that came under their training during those
heady days of growing in Lanesboro. Francis along with his sisters Shirley,
Patricia, Gillian and brother Alan were familiar and popular kids in our town
prior to the family moving away. We also extend our deepest sympathy to his
wife Dearbhail; father Frank, sisters, brother, relatives and friends.

Johnston’s Pharmacy Break in

Gareth
Johnston recently purchased the bank building on Main Street and spent a lot of
money in converting it into his new pharmacy. It was a proud day for this young
man as he strived to develop his business, It was also good for the town as
another of the vacant premises was now up and running as a business.

On
Sunday night/Monday morning of 21st/22nd August his new
premises were robbed during the cover of darkness and it was a shattering blow
to Gareth as his great work in growing his new business. In the short few weeks
of business in his new building this was the second robbery at his premises and
twice within a fortnight. If you or anyone you know while traveling through the
town noticed anything could you contact the local Gardaí.

Triathlon club
meets Iron Man

Sunday
next will see several members of the Lanesboro Triathlon Club take on the
Ironman challenge head on when they travel to Galway for the International
event. Mark Kenny, Sean Farrell, Niall O’Donoghue, Johnny Kilcoyne, P.J. O’Neill,
Brendan O’Sullivan, Colm Daly and ladies Ronie Masterson and Marie Sudway along
with a gallant band of supporters will make the journey to represent the club.

The
Ironman on Sunday comes to Ireland as part of a world series which finishes
with the grand finale in Florida. For a club only in existence since last year
this is a tremendous achievement to have so many competing in this prestigious
event and it shows how far the club had come in the past year. The race on Sunday
will have close to 2000 competitors all vying for the 60 available places in
the final event. The event holds such a high profile that almost 40% of the entrants
come from overseas. The race consists of a 2km swim followed by a 90km cycle
and finishing with the half marathon distance of 21.6km. This is the biggest test
the club members have met since their hugely successful Triathlon in Lanesboro
in July and I have no doubt that they will again rise to the challenge. Good
luck to all.
