Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes 12th september 2011

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
Rathcline Ladies GAA
Following
on to the clubs marvellous success in the County Junior Championship the
winning Rathcline Ladies were given no time to rest on their laurels as they
hosted Westmeath champions Kilbeggan in Clonbonny on Sunday last. It proved to
be a titanic struggle as the Kilbeggan side arrived in Lanesboro with a very
high reputation having beaten a much fancied Moate side in their county final.
The
local ladies had a shaky start and were behind at half time on a 7 to 4 point
scoreline. They emerged a much stronger side in the second half and with 10
minutes to go were leading by two points with Kilbeggan throwing everything at
them. Our ladies were nothing if not heroic in their defence of their lead and
held on for a one point win on the scoreline of 9pts to 8pts.
The
ladies and their team management must be congratulated for a marvellous
performance and look forward to a Leinster quarter final to be played on the
weekend 1st/2nd
October.
Club
Chairperson Madaleine Murray was last week presented with a cheque from Shannon
Gaels Minor Club to help the ladies club in their quest for Leinster glory. The
ladies club would like to thank the minor club for their unexpected and very
generous contribution.
Congratulations
Many
congratulations to Denis Connerton on managing the Longford Slashers team to
retaining their County Championship with a one point win over Clonguish in a
very wet and windy Pearse Park on Sunday last.
5k Road Run
If
you like to run, jog or walk or have an interest in personal fitness then you will
be delighted to hear that there is a 5k run in Lanesboro on Wednesday 21st
September at 7pm.  This run is hosted by
Lough Ree Athletic Club but is organised by Roscommon County Board of Athletics
Ireland.  This is the final run in the 5k
Series and is the first adult 5k run in Lanesboro for a while.  The event is designed to cater for everyone
aged 18 or over, regardless of experience or fitness level and will allow
participants to get an accurate time for 5k on a suitably flat course measured
by an official from Athletics Ireland.
We have been advised the course is a fast course so anyone seeking a
good time or a personal best for 5k this is your chance.  Entry is on the night and costs €10.   Registration takes place from 6pm onwards at
the GAA Clubhouse in Clonbonny.  The
route takes the runners and walkers from Rathcline GAA Grounds at Clonbonny up
the line and returns along the Longford Rd, turning right at Cullen’s Filling
Station with the finish at the entrance to the Clubhouse.  All are welcome.
Road Runs
Training
started last Tuesday night with a road run at Clonbonny and a few hardy souls
turned up to run against a very strong headwind.  Cian Glennon was the star of the day with a
great run over the 1.2-mile course.  The
run commences from Clonbonny on Tuesday at 5.15pm.  Well done to the younger brigade who finished
the run in very tough conditions, we hope to see you all again next week.
Set Dancing Returns
Set Dancing Classes commence on
Monday 19th Sept at 8.30pm in St. Faithleachs Club House in Ballyleague.
All welcome to come along.
Birth
Congratulations to Olive Kenny and
Padraig Murray, Cloontuskert, on the birth last week of a baby girl.
Tidy
Towns Results
The Tidy Towns results were
announced on Monday last leading to contrasting emotions on both sides of the
bridge. All summer the communities of Cloontuskert, Ballyleague and Lanesboro
put in tremendous work in the preparation and presentation of their areas for
the Tidy Towns judging. Cloontuskert having received a very high score of 289
last year could not better on that great number and this year again achieve the
same figure of 289 as last year. Lanesboro despite a great push this year
maintained the same figure as last year which was a disappointment considering
all the work that was done in the months leading up to the judging. I believe
they have discovered the reason for the status quo of last year and look
forward to a big rise next year. Ballyleague on the other hand performed
remarkably well this year and their great work was well rewarded with a 11
point rise in their figures to 213. To all communities I say well done you have
made your areas a much more beautiful place to live and work and we wish you
well as you continue to make great strides in the beautifying of our area. The
onus is becoming greater on all households and businesses to co-operate with
the Tidy Town committees to put us all in with a chance of winning the Tidy
Towns

Paddy making his name as a Referee
Congratulations to
Ballyleague man Patrick Nealon son of Paddy and
Nealon who is continuing to rise the refereeing ladder in Roscommon and
Connaught GAA. Paddy already having done the Connaught Minor semi-final earlier
in the year was referee at the Senior Championship semi-final in Hyde Park on
Sunday last. The St. Faithleach’s club have the distinction of not only Paddy
but also Marty Parker and Ollie Kelly refereeing at high levels in both
Roscommon and Connaught.
Lough Ree Golfing Society
The
Society had their Harvest Outing to New Forest Golf Club on Wednesday 7th
September. This was the last competition for the Golfer of the Year
Competition.
Well
done to Brendan Whitty who won this prestigious prize despite not being able to
compete on Wednesday. None of the main challengers came up to the mark on
Wednesday so Brendan’s excellent score of 25 “golfer of year” points
was a clear winner. Well done Brendan.
New
Forest proved to be a challenge for most that played on this wonderful midland
golf course. However an enjoyable day was had by all and those that dined
in the Castle restaurant in Tyrrellspass afterwards, rounded off the
magnificent day with an outstanding meal which was also very reasonably priced.
The
restaurant was full of satisfied diners, so it just goes to show if a business
provides a quality service it will always do well.
First
prize was won by John James O’Shea, 2nd was Raymond McCormack, 3rd: Sean
Brennan and 4th was won by Donnchadha Mac Aodha.
The
front nine was won by John Fayne and the back nine by Sheena Mac Aodha. Well
done all and to all the other hardy people who competed on this lovely but
challenging course.
The
annual Christmas Scramble Competition will take place at 11 am on Saturday 26th
November at Strokestown Golf Club. The usual soup and sandwiches will be served
before the prize giving.
Immediately
afterwards the Society will have our AGM in the clubhouse and all members are
requested to attend.

may need to create work for themselves and others
Lanesboro Triathlon continues to grow
Despite
appalling conditions which saw the 1.9 k swim reduced to 1 k because of very
rough seas and torrential rain and wind on the 90 k cycle then sunshine for the
most part for the 21.5 run, the entire Lanesboro contingent competing in the
inaugural Ironman in Galway finished the race. Such were the conditions that
there were a higher than normal number of non-finishers in this race. Many
athletes suffering from the cold on the long bike leg were unable to progress
to the run section however an earlier tactical decision by the Lanesboro club
for everyone to take time to don additional clothing for the cycle and loose
some time in transition paid off and all made it to the run section in good
shape. First home from the club was Sean Farrell with Mark Kenny not too far
behind and then steadily the rest of the club arrived to the finish line. Marie
Sudway, P.J O’Neill, Niall O’ Donohue. Ronie Masterson, Johnny Kilcoyne, Colm Daly
and Brendan O’Sullivan all romped in battered and bruised but elated to be
finished. Man of the Match had to be Brendan as he had the biggest smile ever
as he danced across the line. Well done to all.
On the same day another bunch of Lanesboro Triathletes kept the flag flying
locally  when Sean O’Brien , Rosin Mc Sharry , Declan Hynes , Ray Cox ,
Ronnie Johnston and Donal Flynn competed in the very popular Lough Key Sprint
Triathlon and all gave very good accounts of themselves there with Sean O’Brien
leading in the group.
The Triathlon season is coming to an end however not so the appetite of club
members, some of the mountain bikers in the club are considering adventure
races to finish the season and a few of the swimmers have entered a series of long
distance swim in Lough Derg next weekend but no doubt whatever they all do ,
they will do well.
The club’s Masters swimming session have restarted from Monday night  9 pm
– 10 pm in Roscommon pool , contact any of the club members for further details.

Ballyboro
Under
13 Girls – National Cup Qualifiers:
The
Ballyboro U13 Girls travelled to Ballymahon on Sunday last to participate in
the National Cup Qualifiers. Three teams were competing – Olympic Rovers,
Castlepollard Celtic & Ballyboro FC. Ballyboro first met Olympic Rovers and
played a great game of fine football with Rebecca Cox in goals, Aoife Mc
Loughlin & Áine Halpin in defence. Ballyboro were strong and showed more
control when in possession of the ball. They led in mid-field with Marie Kelly &
Hannah Shea with Sarah Scally & Ellen Irwin up-front. They also had a
strong subs-bench with Natasha Hegarty, Isobel Farrell, Olivia Lisle &
Jillian Banahan. The girls drew at full time 0-0. Their next game was against
Castlepollard Celtic; at half-time the score was 0-0. In the 2nd half the girls
started off with a cracking goal from their captain Aoife Mc Loughlin followed
by another two great goals from Ellen Irwin. Hard work between Sarah Scally
& Ellen Irwin resulted with a well-deserved goal from Sarah Scally. Ballyboro’s
last goal of the game was well finished by Ellen Irwin before coming off with
her fellow team-mate Sarah Scally. Rebecca Cox played a fine game in goals.
This gave Ballyboro the lead and allowed them to qualify for the National Cup
qualifiers. Well done to all the girls on the team, Managers/Mentors, Bernie
Scally & Majella Kelly along with trainer John Tynan. We wish them the very
Best of luck as they prepare for Dublin at the end of the month.
