Saturday 15th October. Local girl Helen Feeney will once again be
stepping into the ring on this charitable night and she is seeking your
generous support. This year the designated charity is Canteen Ireland which is
a nationwide support group for young people that have or had cancer. The
thought of a young person suffering with cancer does not bear thinking about
and if you contribution can be of some help then you are doing tremendous work
for these young people. There is a sponsorship card on the counter in O’Brien’s
shop and please donate whatever you can.

congratulate, our neighbours, the Killashee Intermediate team on winning the
Longford Intermediate championship in Pearse Park and wish them well in the

On the Roads of Kildare

The Rathcline Ladies had a
tremendous victory over Newtown Blue in Drogheda and their reward for this
great victory is a trip to the Kildare champions St. Laurence’s to be played in
the south Kildare town of Moone on Saturday next at 3pm. We are sure that the
girls will once again do themselves proud and come home with another victory. We
wish them every success and encourage as many as possible to travel to support
them.

Further recognition for St.
Faithleach’s club

The St.
Faithleach’s GAA club were honoured again last week when Ollie Kelly was
appointed to referee the Connaught FBD Final in New York on Sunday next. This
is a tremendous honour for Ollie to be making the trip to New York for next
Sunday’s Final between New York and home winners. Ollie has refereed for many
years and it is rightful recognition for his dedication to refereeing. It is
also a wonderful honour for the St, Faithleach’s club who over two weekends had
their three referees refereeing major final both here and in New York.

Lanesboro Community Games

The
AGM of Lanesboro Community Games took place on Tuesday 27th of
September. The following officers were elected:

Chairperson:
John Rooney; Secretary: Teresa Ryan; Assistant Secretary: Sharon Brady

Treasurer:
Pauline Casey and Pro: Mary Sorohan

The
meeting was well attended. Many thanks to all of the parents who have offered
their help. In order to compete in any event, the registration form must be completed
and returned to the committee along with 2 euro per child. This is also vital
in order to guarantee notification of events as there may be changes to
previous procedures. Outstanding forms for entry in all events must be returned
by Sunday 9th of October at the latest. Forms may be collected from
O’Brien’s shop and returned to any member of the committee.

We
look forward to a great year of Community Games participation and enjoyment.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club

Well
done to Rathcline Ladies who beat Newtown Blues at weekend in Leinster Quarter
Final. Best of luck in their next outing on next weekend.

Shannon
Gaels Minor Club is holding an important meeting to discuss Minor and Juvenile
team options for 2012 season in Clubhouse on Tuesday 4th Oct at 7.30pm. All
eligible players in these age groups are required to attend.

The
Club would like to extend sympathy to Eileen Kenny Killinure on the death of
her Mother last week.

Rathcline
Ladies GAA Club

Well
done to the Rathcline Ladies senior team who defeated Newtown Blues in the
quarter final of the Leinster club championship on Sunday last. The girls
displayed an impressive performance in a game that ended with a score line of
3-9 to 2-8. The semi-final will take place next weekend with venue and time yet
to be decided. The club would like to thank all the supporters who travelled to
the game in Louth, especially in the wet conditions; the girls really
appreciated the support. We would also like to thank everyone who supported our
table quiz and sponsored prizes for the raffle, a full list of sponsors will be
listed next week.

Primary Schools

Cross-Country
was on offer for the schools in counties Longford and Roscommon last week. The
organisers in Longford were pleased with the increase in numbers on the grounds
of St. Mel’s college. Killoe NS dominated the proceedings and retained the Harry
Farrell Shield. Eamon Kehoe won the 5th/6th class 1000m
and it is with pride that we say that his mother is Veronica Mc Donald from
Barnacor. Local youngsters were ‘thin on the ground’; still Seadhna Ryan deserves
credit for finishing 7th, without team support, and qualifies for
the Connaught Final in Galway later this month, where schools will be competing
for the Cahill Cup.

However,
the star of the day must be Aoife Nolan. The Fermoyle lass finished 3rd
in the girls 3rd/4th class 800m and earned herself one of
the individual medals on offer. In the same race Áine Kennelly was 10th
and the youthful Caoilinn Flood 11th. Had Fermoyle a 4th
girl finishing inside the top 40 they would have won the silver medal. Killoe
won the event with 15pts; Melview 66 and Stonepark 68 were second and third
with high scores.

The
5th/6th class event was very competitive still Maeve
Dervan (Newtowncashel) did well to finish 2nd with the improving
Emily Mc Carthy (Killoe) taking 3rd spot. Great credit must go to,
sprinter, Orla Keane who finished a credible 8th.

Soccer
training listed for Saturday seemed to affect the boys more than the girls!

Forest
Park, Boyle, was the venue for the Roscommon Schools. If Longford was pleased with
the increased participation, the opposite was the case in Roscommon. The very
large entry brought with it, its own headaches. Roxboro and Ballyleague NS were
represented and with over 200 children facing the starter for the 5th/6th
class 1000m, maybe it was just as well Cloontuskert and Ballagh had given it a
miss. With numbers like that Ballyleague students Sarah Scally 18th
and Ellen Irwin 22nd can be well pleased with their performances.
Their teammates finished further back, one having a ‘stitch’ and the other
waited as both finished together. Aisling Farrell, best in training, impressed
herself by finishing between the Ballyleague pair Scally and Irwin. Aisling was
competing for Mercy NS Roscommon.

In
Forest Park, pride of place must go to Damian Hudson, for finishing 12th
from a field of 170. When one considers that this was the Ballyleague youth’s
first race, it puts everything into perspective. Eanna Donohoe was injured and
was unable to take part.

Cross-country
is never short on surprises and that is one of the reasons it is so
interesting.

2012 St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Following
a meeting held last week, the committee have decided to commenced plans for the
2012 St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which will be held in Lanesboro Ballyleague on
Saturday 17th March.

Since
its inception the Parade has become one of the main foal points of the year in
our area and highlights the tremendous community spirit in the twin towns of
Lanesboro and Ballyleague. It is hoped that the coming year’s event will be even
bigger and better than anything that has gone before. Addition activities for both
young and old will be introduced and an announcement of these activities will
be announced. If you have an idea for the parade or want to make an entry you
are invited to contact chairperson – Teresa Costello, Secretary Freda
Connaughton, Treasurer – Adie Farrell or any committee member.

Rathcline GAA Club

The
club would like to extend our congratulations to the ladies club on their
victory over Newtown Blues of Drogheda in the Leinster Quarter Final on
Saturday. On a rainy day in Drogheda the girls played their hearts out and
their efforts led to a superb 3-09 to 2-08 victory over Newtown Blues. Next up
for the girls will be either the Kildare or Meath champions next weekend in the
Leinster Semi-Final. More information will be available in the next few days on
the details of this match through text messages and Facebook. We wish the girls
the best of luck for their game next weekend.

Hard
luck to the men’s senior team who were beaten by Colmcille in the league on
Saturday. The match finished 2-06 to 9 points to Colmcille. Next up for the
lads in the league is Carrickedmond at home in Clonbonny. The match is due to
throw in at 2pm on Sunday but please check fixtures to confirm time as there
could be a change in date and time of this match due to the ladies Leinster
semi-final.
