Death

The
entire area was shocked and saddened when learning of the death of Mrs Annie
Cox, Erra, Curraghroe on Wednesday 28th September. Annie was
predeceased by her husband John some time back and more recently by her brother
Bernie Joe Nerney and sister Mary Liz. She was a lady of great standing and she
was a lady that had a great way with people as was clearly evident by the large
turnout at both her removal from her son Andrews home. Annie will be long
remembered for her generosity of her time to anyone that may be in need of assistance.
Her remains were removed to St. Cecelia’s Church Curraghroe on Thursday and
following her Funeral Mass on Friday her remains were interred in Cloontuskert
Cemetery. To her sons Andrew, Vincent and Sean, daughters Angela and Breda,
sisters Evelyn Rita and Brigid, relatives and many friends we extend our
deepest sympathy.

Death

The
news of the death on Tuesday last 4th October at Mullingar Hospital
of Jarlath Murray, The Green was a great shock to the entire local communities.
Jarlath was a man born and reared in Ballyleague and after some time away from
the area he returned to work with Bord na Mona until his retirement. Jarlath
was predeceased by his wife Freda and daughter Marian. He was a man that had a
wonderful interest in anything involving our communities and was a great
supporter of anything local. He was a founder member of Lough Ree Athletic club
which he dedicated a huge amount of his spare time. He was a wonderful
neighbour and friend and always willing to assist anyone in their time of need.
His remains reposed in Smyth’s Funeral Home on Thursday last before his removal
to St. Mary’s Church. Following his funeral mass on Friday his remains were
laid to rest in Clonbonny cemetery. To his sons George, Tommy and Greg,
brothers Aidan, Kieran and Donald, relatives and friends we extend our heartfelt
sympathy.

Lough Ree AC

After
the excitement of the 5k series and the counties Primary School cross-country it’s
back to the grindstone with the longish run. The Tuesday evenings (5.15pm) time
trials continue at Clonbonny as usual. It is noticeable that regular participants
are enjoying are improving their time. For instance Orla Keane clocked 12min 13
sec  on the 6th Sept, the
following Tuesdays, she recorded 11.05, 12.12, and 12.06 and on Tuesday last 4th
October 10.09sec. The figures speak for themselves. Orla is rated as a sprinter
but if she develops stamina as well, middle distance runners better look
out.  She is not the only one improving
their time, Caoilinn Flood is doing the same as is her brother Cronan who
brought in the best time of the year 8.33. Another consistent performer is
Isabella Farrell and to prove her form she was the first finisher in the Tarmonbarry
Fun Run on Sunday last. Indeed Caoilinn finished well up in the U10 race. The
club is not aware if anymore travelled to this annual fixture that Lanesboro
native Eddie Leavy helped to organise.

The
club issues an open invitation to attend the time trials at Clonbonny on
Tuesday evenings at 5.15. The results are then available in O’Brien’s shop
window.

It
is with deep regret the club learned of the deaths of Mick Enright and Jarlath
Murray. Jarlath was a founder member of the club, while Mick was a great
supporter in the early years when his son Paul won an All-Ireland medal in the
800mm. Mick’s daughter Mary’s continues the tradition in the athletic club as
her children are now involved with the club. The club extends sincere sympathy
to both families.

Hard
luck to the Rathcline ladies who were beaten by St. Laurence’s of Kildare in
