Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes Monday 27th October 2011

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Like Mother Like Sons

The Irish version of Masterchef came to it
conclusion on Thursday of last week. The final was over two nights with the
Tuesday night being spent in a one star and the only two star Michelin
restaurant in Ireland. Head chef in Patrick Guilbaud’s the only two star
restaurant in Ireland is none other than Kieran Glennon son of Colette Glennon,
Church View. His brother Terry is also in the chef team in the prestigious
Mount Wolsey Hotel in Carlow having previously been in the equally prestigious
hotel Killashee House in Naas. It is not off the ground that these two fine
young men discovered there culinary skills as their mother Colette is too an
accomplished pastry chef. It is a wonderful achievement for both of these young
men having reached the pinnacle of their profession and it is also a great
sense of joy to us that these men are from the town of Lanesboro.

Death

It
is with great sadness and regret I record the death at the Sacred Heart
Hospital, Roscommon on Monday last of Bill Curtin, Ballyleague. He was in
failing health for a number of years and bore his cross with great dignity. Bill
was predeceased a number of years back by his wife Genevieve. Bill, a proud
native of Listowel, Co. Kerry came to work as an engineer with Bord na Mona
where worked until his retirement. Bill was a very learned man with a vast
knowledge of absolutely everything and whose wit and humour equalled his vast
intelligence – something I can vouch for during the many mornings in the shop.
Bill was a tremendous friend whose advice and tremendous foresight to this day
rings true. Everybody that came to know him will have fond memories of their
encounter as he always left his mark in a positive way. His remains reposed at
the chapel of the Sacred Heart Hospital, Roscommon on Wednesday followed by
removal to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague. On Thursday following
his Funeral mass his remains were removed to Mount Jerome Crematorium, Dublin.
To his son John, daughter Pauline sisters, relatives and many friends we extend
our deepest sympathy.

Ballyboro Scouts

Seven
Scouts and Venturers from the Ballyboro’ Scout Troop, which are based
in Lanesborough / Ballyleague braved the elements last weekend to compete
in the Annual Scout Liffey Descent in Dublin. This is the first occasion in the
35 years of the event that Scouts from Longford or Roscommon have
participated in this arduous 7 mile Kayaking event which comprises of
over 6 weirs along its course.

The
race started off from Lucan Weir and followed the Liffey through the Strawberry
Beds and its notorious rapids on through Palmerstown and finishing up at the
Garda Rowing Club in Islandbridge.

Catherine
Mullooly from the Venturer Section of the Scout Troop took the Silver Medal in
her category, fighting off stiff opposition from Malahide and Portmarnock Sea
Scouts

The
Troop would like to thank our instructors, Junior and Elaine Hannon for training
up our Kayakers to such a high level of proficiency as all of our Scouts and
Venturers finished the course, and to Longford VEC who made it possible to
train up our Scouts to Irish Canoe Union Level 2 proficiency through their
Annual Youth Club Grants.

Kilgefin
Community Games – Call for help

An attempt to hold our AGM on Monday 10th
failed owing to a very poor turnout. We will attempt to hold our AGM one more
time. If there is not sufficient interest and support our local Community Games
will cease to exist. It would be a terrible pity for this to happen when so
many families in the parish have great memories of competing both locally, in
the County and of course at National Finals in Mosney. Kilgefin Community Games
was founded in 1973 and every year since then there has been local track and
field events for children from U8 to U16 at very little cost to themselves or
their families. The last few years have been a struggle for the committee and
they now feel unable to continue unless more support comes from the local
community. If you are interested in this important sporting organisation in our
community please either come to our AGM on Monday 24th October at
9pm in Ballyleague hall or contact our Secretary, Angela Walton at 087 7514634.

Triathlon Club

The
Triathlon Season may be over now until next year however it has not satisfied
the appetite of some members of our local Lanesboro Triathlon Cub. At this time
of the year the Summer Triathlon events which are tough enough gives way to
what some even consider to be tougher events, Adventure Races. These events
generally are raced on mountains and off road trails and involve a mixture of
mountain running, biking, kayaking, climbing and often orienteering, not for
the faint hearted. Last year Niall Donohue, Sean Farrell and Colm Daly entered
the inaugural Sea to Summit which was in held in Westport and involved tackling
Croagh Patrick and Sean was placed 8th in a very competitive field.
There is talk in the ranks already of putting a team forward again this year
for November’s Race.

Last
weekend, Niall, Colm and one of the junior members of the Club, Niall’s 15 year
old son Jamie travelled to Johnstown’s Bridge to partake in the arduous Run a
Muck Challenge which is a 10k assault course over a very trying and mucky
course but great fun. There must have been six to seven hundred in the race
with the majority opting for just one lap of the course but not so our three
amigos as they tackled the longer curse of mud, ditches, water troughs, rope
bridges, nets and numerous obstacles without any difficulty and finished
together. Great credit must be given to Jamie who soldiered through the course
with a smile on his face throughout, beating many adults in the event.

News
just reached us that Garrett Byrne a Dublin based member of the Triathlon Club
put Lanesboro on the Podium when he finished 6th overall and 1st
over 40 in a the extremely testing Killarney Adventure Race last Saturday. This
race began with a mountain run at the McGillycuddy Reeks into a seriously
technical bike discipline which went over the Gap of Dunloe followed by  a 1.5k Kayak across Muckross Lake . As if
that was not enough when finally getting back on dry land Garrett had to
negotiate another 8k mountain run on Torc Mountain and finish off the race with
a sprint cycle of 4k to the finish in the grounds of Muckross House.  There were 168 competitors in his race and
albeit on his own in Kerry he represented the Club brilliantly and took
honours.

The
Club’s Annual General Meeting was held last Friday in the Co-Op Hall and the
Executive Committee elected is as follows, Chairperson, Ronie Masterson,
Secretary Sean Mimnagh, Treasurer and PRO Colm Daly and the Race Director for
the Two Provinces Triathlon in 2012 is James Gallagher.
