Ballyleague Notes

Rathcline in U21 Final

Sunday last was a red lettered day for the
Rathcline senior club when their Under 21 team bridged a 13 gap to qualify for
their first county final since 1998. This is a great achievement for the panel
and mentors and let us hope that on Sunday next they will complete a marvellous
championship by overcoming a much fancied St. Columba’s, Mullinalaghta in
Pearse Park. The game is timed for a 1pm throw in. All supporters of the club
and their friends are asked to go along to the final and support the lads.

Christmas Day Run

The annual Christmas Day run/walk from
Newtowncashel to Lanesboro will once again take place on Christmas morning
commencing from ‘The Hill’ Newtowncashel and finishing at the bridge in
Lanesboro. The run is the main fundraiser of the year for Multiple Sclerosis
Society that does tremendous work in the county throughout the year with the
funds raised. If you are not doing the run/walk please be as generous as
possible can when approached – you are assured the funds will be used wisely.
The walkers will start off at 11.45 and the runners will commence at 12.15. The
committee is looking forward to more favourable conditions this year than last
year and also are hoping for a record number of participants.

Lough Ree Golfing Society

The
annual Christmas Scramble will be held this Saturday, 3rd December,
at Strokestown Golf Club. Refreshments will be served in the clubhouse bar from
10.30 am and there will be a shotgun start for the scramble at 11 am followed
by food in the bar. Immediately after the prize giving the Society will have
their AGM and all members are requested to attend.

As
usual text 0879730611 if you wish to play in the scramble. Looking forward to a
good day and hopefully the rain will stay away while all golfers are out on the
course.

Christmas Music and Carols

Edel Loftus, her harpists and Choir will
perform a rendition of Christmas Music and carols in St. Mary’s Parish Hall on
Sunday 11th December at 7.30pm. As usual this promises to be one of
the highlights of the Christmas season and an evening of true enjoyment for all
music lovers.

Dogs attack Sheep

It has been brought to my notice of a
number of incidents in the Mahoraveen area where dogs have attacked sheep and
lambs in the area. All dog owners are asked to ensure that their dogs are in
their care at all times and if any stray dogs are seen in the general area can
they please notify the dog warden.

As we are approaching the lambing season
it is very important that all dog owners are sure of the whereabouts of their
dogs and that everybody is vigilant in relation to stray dogs in their area.

Birth

Congratulations to Cathal and Donna
Lennon, Lehery, on the recent birth of a baby boy.

Sympathy

We would like to extend our sincere
sympathy to John P and Margaret Jordan and family, the Green on the death
recently of John’s brother Joseph in Oldham, England recently.

Scór na nÓg County Champions

The Shannon Gaels Scór na nÓg sketch group
completed a marvellous double when in Ardagh Community Centre on Sunday last
they retained the title that they won last year. This is a wonderful feat
considering that they had never won a Scór na nÓg county title until last year.
The final takes place on Sunday 11th December in the Downs
Clubhouse, outside Mullingar commencing at 3pm.

Tremendous work goes into the preparation
of all the disciplines and while we are celebrating the success of the sketch
we are also remembering those that took part for the club this year of which
some were hugely unlucky not to have qualified for the county final. Scór for
the club is in its infancy and continuing to grow. It is a wonderful social
event for all of the young people of the parish and a wonderful means of using
their talents in a most enjoyable way.  We continue to encourage every
young person in the parish to avail of the opportunities that Scór affords – it
provides great fun and craic and offers our young people a different option and
means to involve themselves in worthwhile activities. We hope the next year the
club will compete in all of the disciplines and this can only happen with the
support of the young of our parish and also involvement in the disciplines by
adults who have expertise. The full list of disciplines is Céilí or Figure
Dancing, Solo Singing, Instrumental Group, Recitation/Storytelling, Ballad
Group, Question Time, Novelty Act and Set Dancing. To grow and
develop we need your support and input and we invite all those with expertise
to contact any member of the Minor Club executive. We are again competitive on
and off the field and we want now to be successful for and with all our young
people

Death

The entire area was deeply shocked and saddened when the news broke
on Thursday last 24th November of the sudden death of Padraig
Mimnagh. Padraig was son of John and Eileen Mimnagh, The Green and in recent
times he had some health issues. He was a jovial and great young man who had
tremendous warmth. Padraig was a bright intelligent young man who had a great
life in front of him until a life altering motorbike accident while at 3rd
level college in Dublin some 15 years ago. His passing leaves a great emptiness
in the hearts and minds of us that had the pleasure to know and enjoy his
company. His input into our lives will be forever lasting and to none more so
than his parents brothers and sisters. His remains reposed at the family
residence on the Green until his removal on Saturday to St. Mary’s Church,
Lanesboro for his Funeral Mass which was followed by his burial in Clonbonny
Cemetery. The huge attendance on the day will be a huge sense of comfort to his
family. To his father John, mother Eileen, brothers, Sean and Mark, sisters,
Mary, Helen, Catherine, Bernie, Martina and Geraldine, relatives and many
friends we extend our sincere sympathy

St. Columba’s in Pearse Park. We would urge everyone to come out and support
the team next Sunday in their quest for silverware. Best of luck to all the
panel and the management team. The game will throw in at 1pm.

The
long awaited Division 1 relegation playoff will take place Sunday December 11th

status but if we lose we are relegated. Please keep an eye on fixtures for more
details.

would be willing to help out within the club to please attend. Nomination and

to any of the executive before Monday 5th December? Can all
Executive members please return the forms to Cathal as soon as possible.

The

are as follows: 1st prize – €3000, 2nd prize – €1000, 3rd
prize – €750, 4th prize – €500, 5th prize – €250, 6th

club would like to extend get well wishes to our club Vice-Chairman Louis
Skelly and we wish him a speedy recovery.

club would like to extend our sympathies to the Mimnagh family on the sudden
death of Padraig. May he rest in peace.

Santa Arrives at Charity Shop

Santa will be visiting the Friends of the Asthma Charity shop on
Main Street on Saturday 17th December. He will make his arrival at
12 noon on the day but the mystery is how he will arrive. With his sleigh in
for a major overhaul before he makes the big journey later in the month the big
question is ‘how will Santa arrive’? If you think you know how he will arrive
you can enter your guess at the charity shop and there will be a prize for
every child that gets the answer correct.

Thank You

Hugh and Paul would like to say a very big thank you to the
Rathcline GAA club and the Lanesboro Tourism Co-Op for their most recent
support, it was indeed appreciated.
