Birth

Congratulations
to Denis and Eilish Dillon, Fermoyle, on the birth last week of a baby girl.

Death

It
was with great sadness and regret that we learned of the death at the Innis Ree
Nursing Home on 19th December of one of the legendary figures of the
Lanesboro Ballyleague area Nancy Healy.
Nancy Brennan originally hailed from Cullentra before marrying Tim
O’Donnell and for many years they ran a thriving business in Ballyleague.
Following Tim’s early death Nancy sold on the business. Later in life she
married Mike Healy from Newtowncashel where they ran a thriving business at the
lower end of the town beside the bridge (Nurse Donlon’s). Following Mike’s
sudden death Nancy moved back to the homestead to reside with her brothers Mike
and the late Johnny. She was a straight talking lady and she had a wonderful
turn of phrase. It is for certain, anybody that met Nancy would never ever
forget their time with her. She was a larger than life character and her memory
will live long in the memory of all of us. Her remains were removed from
Farrell’s Funeral Home to St. Mary’s Church Lanesboro and following her Funeral
Mass her remains were interred in Cashel cemetery. To her brother Mike,
relatives and many many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Shannon Gaels AGM

The AGM of the
Shannon Gaels Minor club took place in St. Mary’s parish hall on Friday night
last. It was very pleasing to see the largest turnout in many years in
attendance. In his address, outgoing chairman Jimmy Flood addressed all the
issues of the year and highlighted the high points and also commented some of
the problems faced during the year. Club secretary Seadna Ryan produced a
detailed report of the year’s activities. The highlight of the club year in
both reports was no doubt the Scór na nÓg Novelty Act that has qualified for
the Leinster Final that takes place at the Ballymore Community Centre, Co.
Westmeath on Sunday next. Jimmy thought it was very unfortunate that the solo
singing Tara Leigh Lulham and the Ballad group did not qualify for the county
final as they had great potential. It is further proof that the Shannon Gaels
Minor club is much more than football alone and it is hoped that the Scór side
of the club can continue to grow and flourish and take the club to a new level.
Seadna remarked in his report the fact that the club was very vibrant from
Nursery coaching right up to Minor and that it took a huge amount of man and
woman power to enable the club to cater for all the teams. He also commented on
the high number of off the field activities that the club involves itself in
and was thankful to everyone for their time and effort for the Minor Club.

Brendan Keane
gave a very detailed breakdown of the club’s finances and although the club is
in reasonable shape at the moment, the cost of running the club is continuing
to rise and it is very important that the club functions are fully supported
commencing with the upcoming play ‘The Pitch’ on Saturday 21st
January in St. Mary’s hall. This year the club will not be running Search for a
Star and further ideas are being sought.

The following
executive was elected for the coming year Chairman – Sean Kenny, Secretary –
Seadna Ryan, Assistant secretary Ciara Myhill, Treasurer – Brendan Keane,
Assistant Treasurer – Tina Dowd, Child Protection Office to be announced at the
Senior AGM on Friday night next, Coaching Officer – Sean Kenny & Seadna
Ryan, PRO –Joe O’Brien.

Death

It was with great
regret we learned of the death at The Midlands Hospital, Mullingar, on 1st
January of Elizabeth Farrell, Curraghroe. She was predeceased a few years ago
by her late husband Tommie Joe. Elizabeth was a native of Killashee and indeed
a proud Longford woman who never went without her Longford Leader every week.
She was a great mother and wife and her interests in life was the development
of her family. She was a lovely lady and a great character, whose company you
would thoroughly enjoy. She had a great outlook on life and she will be sadly
missed by her family, neighbours and anyone that had the pleasure to meet her
during her life.

Following her
remains reposing at her daughter and son in laws house she was removed from the
residence to the St. Cecilia’s Church on Wednesday last and following her
Funeral Mass on Thursday she was laid to rest in Cloontuskert cemetery. To her
sons Hugh and P.J. daughters Annette and Noleen, relatives and many friends we
extend our sincere sympathy.
