Young Scientists Achievements

Last
weekend was a very proud time for residents and former residents of the
Lanesboro Ballyleague when the announcements of the Young Scientist of the Year
were announced at the RDS on Friday last in Dublin.

Local
Lanesboro Community College first year student Mark Lyons, son of Michael and
Mary Lyons, Longford Road was awarded second place in the Social and
Behavioural section Junior age category – Individual. Marks project was entitled
“The benefits of regular reading….being a bookworm isn’t a bad thing! Marks
award is a tremendous achievement for both himself, his family and also for the
great work that Lanesboro Community continues to do each year for the Young
Scientist competition and they are receiving their due rewards for their time
and energy. Mark work with his project was done with the mentoring of Community
College teacher Michael Lyons.

Representing
The Convent of Marcy in Roscommon was Shauna O’Neill, daughter of James and
Margaret O’Neill, Cloontuskert, in the Technology section in the Intermediate
age category – Individual with a project entitled Electricity generation via
induction versus piezoelectric material. Shauna was awarded 3rd
prize for her project which again is a wonderful achievement and her mentor for
her project was her teacher Padraig Harlow.

In
the Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences section The Marist College
Athlone was awarded 1st place in the group section. A member of that
winning team was Jack Ryan whose father Seamus moved with his family from Clare
to Cloontuskert some years ago. These lads mentor was Cian O’Brien a teacher in
the Marist.

Overall,
this was a tremendous result for these young people and their schools and they
are achievements that we as a community can be proud of the youth that represent
our community.

Lough Ree AC

The
Annual Christmas Day Fun Run took place in conjunction with the MS Run from
Newtowncashel to Lanesboro.  Óisín Kenny
led the field home followed by Conor Sorohan with Bryn Peters in third
place.  Caoilinn Flood, Ivan Johnston and
Jane Dowd took the minor places.  We were
disappointed with the turnout as the children who participated really seemed to
enjoy the run and it added to the atmosphere of the morning.  The MS Run had a record number of participants
this year and we congratulate all the finishers.

It
was great to hear from former club member Deirdre Hopkins over Christmas.  Deirdre is training with the local Northside Running
Group, McMahons Point, Sydney, Australia where she has been living and working
for the past two years.  Deirdre attended
college in Sligo where she got a scholarship due to her successes in mountain
running, an event she represented Ireland in on a couple of occasions.  It is great to see she is still involved in
the sport.

We
hope to get back into training indoors over the next couple of weeks so all
athletes are requested to dust off their running shoes in preparation for the
indoor training.  A text will go out in
advance advising of the date and time.

Lanesboro Community Games

Firstly
the LCG would like to sincerely sympathise with Pauline Casey on the death of
her mother Ms Beades.

On
Sunday last, 3 of our Chess and Draughts teams travelled to Ardagh for their
first matches. As the matches could not be cancelled, a minute silence was observed
in memory of Mrs Beades and Pauline’s loss.

Our
Lanesboro (B) U-12 Chess teams made up of Evan Chalmers, Seadna Ryan, Brian
Casey, Gerard Brennan, Duileach Ryan, Sean Kenny and Conor Sorohan,
comprehensively won their match with every player ether winning or drawing
their individual match.  This was a great
achievement from a very young team.  This
team is now through to the county Finals.

Our
U16 Chess team also had a great victory, again with all the players either
winning or drawing their individual matches.
This team is made up of Mark Lyons, Daniel O’Reilly, Evan Chalmers, Lara
O’Sullivan and Aaron Farrell.

In
our third match, – the U12 Draughts (B) team made up of Ultan O’Sullivan, Conor
Sorohan, Evan Chalmers, Seadhna Ryan, Mark Dowd and Harvey Myhill were narrowly
defeated by Ardagh 7-5 (6-4).  Special
mention here to Ultan and Havey who joined this team very late but contributed
greatly to almost getting a tie in the result.

Congratulations
to Mark Lyons on his fantastic prize winning achievement at the Young scientist
of the year, we were delighted mark was able to turn his focus to chess on
Sunday after an extremely busy week.
