Lanesboro Ballyleaague Notes 11th June 2012

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Cemetery Sunday

The blessing of graves will commence at Rathcline cemetery on Sunday 1st July followed by Lanesboro Cemetery on Sunday 8th and finishing on Sunday 15th July in Clonbonny cemetery.

With the blessing of the graves only a few weeks away from the first one in Rathcline cemetery it is very important with those with family members buried in Rathcline make every effort to have their family graves in pristine condition. Tremendous work is being done in maintaining the graveyard in general as you will see on your arrival.

Lough Ree Athletic Club

Let us start by congratulating all the medal winners at the County Longford Community Games in Ballymahon on Saturday last and not forgetting the rest who represented their parish to the best of their ability. Well done all! At the time of writing the results were not to hand, but, no doubt, they will be recorded elsewhere in the notes.

No marks, however, to whose idea it was to change the date from Sunday to Saturday at such short notice, certainly the children was not their priority! Yes, there was a football match in Tullamore.

Saturday was the day fixed for the Connaught Athletic Championship finals for Under 9 to Under 12 in Galway which are organised on a team basis -2 per team, apart from relays. Some, if not all would have been in Ballymahon, but those from the Roscommon side have to be catered for as well. It seemed a lost cause, apart from the waste of entry fees etc.

However, Orla Keane travelled, knew her 60m was on first. Got out of her heat and semi-final to reach the final where she finished fourth to qualify for the All-Ireland finals in Cork. Orla was then whisked off to Ballymahon where we believe she won the 100m for under12s. The other side of the coin is Louise Costello who ran a great race in the under10 500m but had no partner and no chance.

The diminutive Róisin Brennan surprised the club by opting to take part in Galway, She teamed up with our young Latvian from Ballyleague, Elizabeth Eglite, in the under 10 Ball throw. We thought with a little luck they might get into the medals as they we are a useful pair. They surprised us again by taking the gold medal as Connaught Champions. At 2pm when we went to tell Róisin that they had won the gold, her mother had already left for Ballymahon where she took a bronze medal in the hurdles. How is that for dedication!

Medals galore at Community Games Final

The Community Games County Athletics Track and Field events took place under bright sunlight on Saturday last.  Little was it expected, after such a dreadful week of weather, that the sun would shine so brightly for a most enjoyable day.  After the great success of Lanesboro at this event last year, it was going to be extremely difficult to match that performance.  However, the great performances of the children ensured an even better result this year making the large Lanesboro following and parents very proud. Overall Lanesboro won six gold medals, two silver medals and seven bronze medals taking home a total of 30 medals with relay’s counted.

Many thanks to Lanesboro Athletic club’s Steve and Marie Peters, Fabian Walsh and Margaret Mullooly and also the athlete’s parents for ensuring all the children were well prepared, enabling them to deliver the best possible performances.  Thank you to the Community Games committee who, along with looking after the Lanesboro team, also helped out with the running of the event.

A testimony to the athletic club was the great success in the track events:  Anna Peters and Orla Keane took gold – with something to spare – in the U-16 and U-12 100Ms while Aoife Nolan ran a fantastic race to win gold in the U-10 200M. After an almost fatal start, due to a slip, Kevin Sorohan secured a lead on the first leg which was held around the track by his team mates Anna Peters, Haley Rooney and Mark Lyons to secure  gold in the U-15 Mixed Relay. The success on the track did not stop there with bronze medals being won by Mark Lyons in the U-16 100M and Róisin Brennan in the U-10 Hurdles.  Just missing out on gold, a silver medal was won by the Girls U-16 relay of Laura Peters, Dearbhail Flood, Melissa Gilmore and Shannon Rooney.  Two further bronze medals were won on the track by the U-12 boys relay team of Cronan Flood, Liam Ross, Even Chalmers, Séadhna Ryan, Sean Kenny and Bryn Peters and the U-14 Girls Relay, Sarah and Tanya Farrell, Aisling Casey, Niamh Chawke and Hannah Shea. Many other athletes finished 4th and 5th and all Lanesboro athletes were competitive.

In the Field events Gold medals were won by Tanya Farrell in the long jump and Laura Peters in the U-16 discus.  In the Shot Putt Stephen O’Dowd narrowly missed gold in winning a silver medal and Sarah Farrell secured bronze.  Further bronze medals were won by Niall Keane in the boys U-14 Long Jump and Lauren Tansey in the ball throw.

Congratulations to the medal winners and all the athletes who missed out on medals on this occasion – all performed excellently.  Best of luck to the gold medal winners who will be representing Longford in Athlone in August in the All-Ireland Community Games Finals.

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Annette and Michael Costello and family, Killinure and the extended Hagan family on the death of Mrs Mary Frances Kelly, Racecourse Road, Roscommon recently.

Have you signed up yet?

We all appreciate the need for people in our area to be trained and reskilled in the use of the defibrillator. It is a wonderful opportunity for people to train in the use of the defibrillator and the opportunity for those already trained to up-skill to the new developments in the use of the defibrillator.

Presently there is a course for people interested for the first time and also an up-skilling course for those having previously done the course. If you are interested you should leave your name into Martina or Bridgie O’Brien before Sunday 10th June.

Rathcline GAA

We would like to stress the importance of subscribing to the club’s new Club Rathcline fundraising scheme. Each year, the club are required to repay €20,000 to the Credit Union after the redevelopment of Clonbonny. The aim of the Club Rathcline Scheme is to raise funds to pay off this loan, to ensure that the club can still afford to field teams and represent the parish. While we appreciate that the €100 fee may seem high, it works out at roughly €2 per week and with weekly draws, there is a high chance of winning a prize. The club greatly appreciates those who have already signed up, and would be indebted to those who help the club survive by subscribing. Tickets can be bought from members of the Executive. The Senior Team resume their league campaign away to Killoe this evening, Wednesday. Throw in is at 8pm.

Tidy Towns

The committee would like to thank everybody for their continued support in getting the town to look its very best for judging. The first quarry has been fully cleaned out and a new walk/path from the woodland walk to the quarry has been created. It is planned, in conjunction with the National Parks and Wildlife Service, to reintroduce wild flora, under licence, back into the quarry area over the coming months. The committee thanks Longford Community Resources, Longford Co Council and John L Farrell and the FAS workers for their trojan work in getting this project completed. This project is completed as a result of positive engagement and dialogue with the various agencies for the benefit of the community. Trees guards and litter bins/planter boxes are currently being installed on the Main Street, each expertly designed and constructed by Vinny Mc Gowan and his staff. We hope that this year’s efforts and considerable financial investment will be reflected in our marks. Clean ups continue each week and we encourage everybody to help in making our town a nicer place to live and to enjoy. Your support of Lanesboro Tourism Coop weekly lottery is very much appreciated and these monies help in completing the various projects.

The Tourism coop would like to thank the Lough Ree Development committee for purchasing the pump which is currently in progress of being installed at the green, also the Monday night bridge club for their kind donation towards the installation and completion of this project.
